Spatial and temporal distribution of soil-transmitted helminth infection in sub-Saharan Africa: a systematic review and geostatistical meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Interest is growing in predictive risk mapping for neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), particularly to scale up preventive chemotherapy, surveillance, and elimination efforts. Soil-transmitted helminths (hookworm, Ascaris lumbricoides, and Trichuris trichiura) are the most widespread NTDs, but broad geographical analyses are scarce. We aimed to predict the spatial and temporal distribution of soil-transmitted helminth infections, including the number of infected people and treatment needs, across sub-Saharan Africa. METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, Web of Knowledge, and

Gastrointestinal helminths may affect host susceptibility to anthrax through seasonal immune trade-offs.

BACKGROUND: Most vertebrates experience coinfections, and many pathogen-pathogen interactions occur indirectly through the host immune system. These interactions are particularly strong in mixed micro-macroparasite infections because of immunomodulatory effects of helminth parasites. While these trade-offs have been examined extensively in laboratory animals, few studies have examined them in natural systems. Additionally, many wildlife pathogens fluctuate seasonally, at least partly due to seasonal host immune changes. We therefore examined seasonality of immune resource allocation, pathogen

A new arhythmacanthid species (Acanthocephala) in the intestine of Symphurus plagiusa and Ciclopsetta chittendeni from the coast of Campeche, Mexico, with ecological and histopathological observations.

A new species of Acanthocephaloides was recovered in the intestine of Symphurus plagiusa, the blackcheek tonguefish, and Cyclopsetta chittendeni, the Mexican flounder, from the Campeche coast, Mexico. The new species is characterized by having proboscis hooks arranged in 14 to 16 longitudinal rows, with 6-7 rooted hooks per row, a trunk covered with small cuticular spines (except in the zone of gonopore or bursa), a bursa without sensory structures, and the relative position of male post-equatorial reproductive system. The prevalence of Acanthocephaloides plagiusae n. sp. from S. plagiusa was

Impact of gastrointestinal parasitic nematodes of sheep, and the role of advanced molecular tools for exploring epidemiology and drug resistance - an Australian perspective.

Parasitic nematodes (roundworms) of small ruminants and other livestock have major economic impacts worldwide. Despite the impact of the diseases caused by these nematodes and the discovery of new therapeutic agents (anthelmintics), there has been relatively limited progress in the development of practical molecular tools to study the epidemiology of these nematodes. Specific diagnosis underpins parasite control, and the detection and monitoring of anthelmintic resistance in livestock parasites, presently a major concern around the world. The purpose of the present article is to provide a conc

[Brain hydatidosis: report of four cases].

In only 2% of all cases of hydatidosis, the cysts are located in the brain. We report a 12-year-old male, a 5-year-old girl and a 19-year-old female consulting for intracranial hypertension and a 13-year-old male consulting for a left hemiparesis. Imaging studies found intra-cerebral cysts with characteristics of hydatidosis in all. All lesions were completely removed surgically and the pathological study of the excised piece confirmed the diagnosis of hydatidosis.

Occurrence of gastrointestinal helminths in Bactrian camel in Iran.

A study on naturally acquired gastrointestinal helminthic parasites in Bactrian camel was carried out in Ardabil province, northwest of Iran, which is the main site of this species in Iran. This species has importance in Iran due to its low population. A total of 25 faecal samples (25% of population) were examined by Clayton Lane method to determine the egg count of different types of helminths in different age groups. Helminth eggs were found in 13 (52%) of the faecal samples (0-191 eggs/gm, 51.96±13.82). Bactrian camels were infected with Nematodirus sp. (32%), Trichuris sp. (32%), Marshalla

[Toxocariasis].

The clinical presentation of toxocariasis, a zoonotic parasitosis transmitted from dogs and cats to humans, can be very diverse, which is one of the reasons why Toxocara-related disease may go unnoticed. This paper gives a brief summary of the various clinical presentations (covert/common toxocariasis, visceral larva migrans, ocular toxocariasis and neurotoxocariasis), diagnostic and differential-diagnostic considerations as well as treatment and prevention. In brief, the diagnosis of human toxocariasis relies mainly on patient data, anamnestic information, symptoms, eosinophil count and total

Strongyloides stercoralis hyperinfection: difficulties in diagnosis and treatment.

Immunocompromised patients who are infected with Strongyloides stercoralis may develop a potentially fatal auto-infection syndrome characterised by non-specific pulmonary and gastrointestinal symptoms and Gram negative sepsis. We present the case of one such patient who underwent a negative laparotomy for a presumed intra-abdominal surgical catastrophe with a subsequent protracted stay on the intensive care unit. Once the diagnosis of strongyloidiasis was made, the patient was successfully treated with subcutaneous antihelminthic drugs. With appropriate screening for and eradication of strongy

Malaria severity status in patients with soil-transmitted helminth infections.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the possible impact of soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infection on malaria severity, level of parasitaemia and clearance/reduction of Plasmodium parasites following treatment with anti-malarial drugs. METHODS: 458 voluntary malaria patients who visited the Alaba Kulito Health Center, southern Ethiopia, for medical treatment in November and December 2007 were included in this study. Giemsa-stained thick and thin blood films were used for the determination of parasitaemia and identification of Plasmodium species, respectively. Stool sample was collected from these pat

Global epidemiology, ecology and control of soil-transmitted helminth infections.

Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections are among the most prevalent of chronic human infections worldwide. Based on the demonstrable impact on child development, there is a global commitment to finance and implement control strategies with a focus on school-based chemotherapy programmes. The major obstacle to the implementation of cost-effective control is the lack of accurate descriptions of the geographical distribution of infection. In recent years, considerable progress has been made in the use of geographical information systems (GIS) and remote sensing (RS) to better understand helmi

[Tropical and subtropical helminthoses].

Human helminthic infestations are extraordinarily common in tropical regions and represent a significant burden for those countries and their populations. The risk of intestinal helminthoses is further increased by poverty. Particularly in children helminthoses lead to malnutrition (ascariasis etc) or iron and protein deficiency (ancylostomiasis). Tropical helminthoses like schistosomiasis and filariasis can cause severe organ damage, starvation, and early death. In contrast, returning travellers very rarely acquire tropical helminthoses, if they follow simple hygienic rules. Furthermore, the

Prevalence of intestinal parasitic pathogens in HIV-seropositive individuals in Northern India.

To assess the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-seropositive subjects, fecal samples were collected from 120 HIV-seropositive patients and were analyzed for various intestinal parasites. Thirty-six patients (30%) were found to harbor an intestinal parasite. Cryptosporidium parvum was the most common (10.8%), followed by Giardia lamblia (8.3%). Cyclospora cayetanensis and Blastocystis hominis each were detected in 3.3% of the patients, while Isospora belli and Enterocytozoon bieneusi were each detected in 2.5% of the patients. The other parasite

Drastic reduction of a filarial infection in eosinophilic interleukin-5 transgenic mice.

In order to establish the role of eosinophils in destroying parasites, transgenic mice have been used in experimental helminthiases but not in filariasis. Litomosoides sigmodontis offers a good opportunity for this study because it is the only filarial species that completes its life cycle in mice. Its development was compared in transgenic CBA/Ca mice overexpressing interleukin-5 (IL-5) and in wild-type mice following subcutaneous inoculation of 40 infective larvae. An acceleration of larval growth was observed in the IL-5 transgenic mice. However, the recovery rate of adult worms was conside

[Human intestinal parasites in Subsaharan Africa. III. Pemba Island (Zanzibar-Tanzania)].

The authors carried out a coprological survey in Pemba Island, analysing, by modified Ritchie technique, 413 stools samples. The specimens were collected among the population from apparently healthy subjects chosen at random in a number equal to 2% of the whole population. The examined subjects were divided in 3 age groups, 211 were males, 202 females. The following results were obtained (in order of prevalence): a) Protozoa: Entamoeba coli 35.6%, Giardia intestinalis 5.6%, Endolimax nana 4.3%, E. histolytica 3.1%, Chilomastix mesnili 2.9%, Iodamoeba buetschlii 4.3%, E. hartmanni 0.7%; b) Helm

Public health significance of intestinal parasitic infections. WHO Expert Committee.

Intestinal parasitic infections are distributed virtually throughout the world, with high prevalence rates in many regions. Amoebiasis, ascariasis, hookworm infection and trichuriasis are among the ten most common infections in the world. Other parasitic infections such as abdominal angiostrongyliasis, intestinal capillariasis, and strongyloidiasis are of local or regional public health concern. The prevention and control of these infections are now more feasible than ever before owing to the discovery of safe and efficacious drugs, the improvement and simplification of some diagnostic procedu

The present impossibility of eradicating of omnipresent worm.

Helminths are the most prevalent infectious agents of humans. In contrast to all other infectious agents, helminths do not multiply within the definitive human host. A consequence of this biological situation is that most infected individuals have levels of infection below a threshold required for the induction of any overt manifestations of disease. Since transmission of of helminthic infections is so effective, largely because of the enormous reproductive potential, it is exceedingly difficult to control transmission and impossible to eradicate infection with the tools available today. A cos

Prevalence of intestinal helminths and protozoans in a rural population segment of the Dominican Republic.

There are few reports of parasitic disease prevalence in the Dominican Republic. The most recent study was that by Mackie et al. (1951). Examination of purged specimens from individuals employed by two sugar plantations demonstrated generally high prevalences of a number of helminths and protozoans. We report here the findings of a prevalence study using a population sample of 453 individuals. Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, hookworm, Enterobius vermicularis, Giardia lamblia and Entamoeba coli were found.
