A novel residual network based on multidimensional attention and pinwheel convolution for brain tumor classification.

Early and accurate brain tumor classification is vital for clinical diagnosis and treatment. Although Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are widely used in medical image analysis, they often struggle to focus on critical information adequately and have limited feature extraction capabilities. To address these challenges, this study proposes a novel Residual Network based on Multi-dimensional Attention and Pinwheel Convolution (Res-MAPNet) for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) based brain tumor classification. Res-MAPNet is developed on two key modules: the Coordinated Local Importance Enhance

Noncontrast MRI Surveillance of Craniopharyngiomas Using a Balanced Steady-state Free Precession (bSSFP) Sequence.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Contrast-enhanced MRI (CEMRI) is a commonly used imaging technique for craniopharyngioma surveillance; however, it carries risks such as allergic reaction and gadolinium deposition. This study evaluates the efficacy of non contrast-enhanced MRI (NCMRI) with a balanced steady-state free precession (bSSFP) sequence compared with CEMRI T1-weighted imaging for craniopharyngioma surveillance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-nine patients with craniopharyngioma (16 females/13 males, mean age =21.5 ± 4.3 years) with CEMRIs, including a bSSFP sequence, were evaluated. For each p

Image-and-Label Conditioning Latent Diffusion Model: Synthesizing A$\beta$-PET From MRI for Detecting Amyloid Status.

Deposition of $\beta$-amyloid (A$\beta$), which is generally observed by A$\beta$-PET, is an important biomarker to evaluate subjects with early-onset dementia. However, acquisition of A$\beta$-PET usually suffers from high expense and radiation hazards, making A$\beta$-PET not commonly used as MRI. As A$\beta$-PET scans are only used to determine whether A$\beta$ deposition is positive or not, it is highly valuable to capture the underlying relationship between A$\beta$ deposition and other neuroimages (i.e., MRI) and detect amyloid status based on other neuroimages to reduce necessity of acq

Bias in deep learning-based image quality assessments of T2-weighted imaging in prostate MRI.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether deep learning (DL)-based image quality (IQ) assessment of T2-weighted images (T2WI) could be biased by the presence of clinically significant prostate cancer (csPCa). METHODS: In this three-center retrospective study, five abdominal radiologists categorized IQ of 2,105 transverse T2WI series into optimal, mild, moderate, and severe degradation. An IQ classification model was developed using 1,719 series (development set). The agreement between the model and radiologists was assessed using the remaining 386 series with a quadratic weighted kappa. The model was

A robust deep learning framework for cerebral microbleeds recognition in GRE and SWI MRI.

Cerebral microbleeds (CMB) are small hypointense lesions visible on gradient echo (GRE) or susceptibility-weighted (SWI) MRI, serving as critical biomarkers for various cerebrovascular and neurological conditions. Accurate quantification of CMB is essential, as their number correlates with the severity of conditions such as small vessel disease, stroke risk and cognitive decline. Current detection methods depend on manual inspection, which is time-consuming and prone to variability. Automated detection using deep learning presents a transformative solution but faces challenges due to the heter

Development and evaluation of a new semi-quantitative and morphometric scoring system for magnetic resonance imaging in adolescents with Osgood Schlatter Disease (The OSIS Score).

BACKGROUND: Osgood Schlatter Disease (OSD) is a common injury in adolescents. A recent systematic review identified multiple tissue characteristics evaluated in imaging studies, but the studies used different imaging modalities, used varying MRI protocols and were of poor study quality, which led to conflicting findings and hamper the clinical utility of MRI scans. This study aimed to develop and evaluate the reliability of a semi-quantitative MRI scoring system for use in adolescents with OSD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Based on a systematic review, we used an expert-led process to develop a sco

Sub-graph entropy based network approaches for classifying adolescent obsessive-compulsive disorder from resting-state functional MRI.

This paper presents a novel approach for classifying obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in adolescents from resting-state fMRI data. Currently, the state-of-the-art for diagnosing OCD in youth involves interviews with adolescent patients and their parents by an experienced clinician, symptom rating scales based on Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), and behavioral observation. Discovering signal processing and network-based biomarkers from functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans of patients has the potential to assist clinicians in their diagnostic assessme

Automatic detection of the meningioma tumor firmness in MRI images.

Meningioma is among the most common primary tumors of the brain. The firmness of Meningioma is a critical factor that influences operative strategy and patient counseling. Conventional methods to predict the tumor firmness rely on the correlation between the consistency of Meningioma and their preoperative MRI findings such as the signal intensity ratio between the tumor and the normal grey matter of the brain. Machine learning techniques have not been investigated yet to address the Meningioma firmness detection problem. The main purpose of this research is to couple supervised learning algor

Graph theory and network topological metrics may be the potential biomarker in Parkinson's disease.

This study used Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) to investigate changes in brain structure and networks functional connectivity, respectively. We tried to identify the potential biomarkers in Parkinson's disease (PD) progression. We recruited nine idiopathic PD patients and seven healthy control participants (HC group) who were age-matched to undergo T1-weighted images and rs-fMRI on 1.5 T. Brain structure differences were analyzed by VBM. Topological properties of networks functional connectivity were analyzed by graph theory. Thi
