The impact of five years of annual ivermectin treatment on skin microfilarial loads in the onchocerciasis focus of Asubende, Ghana.

Following the registration of ivermectin (Mectizan) for human use in the treatment of onchocerciasis, in 1987 the Onchocerciasis Control Programme in West Africa (OCP) begun a series of trials in order to determine the safety of the drug when used on a large scale and its potential for morbidity control. This paper reports the changes in skin microfilarial loads during the first 5 years of annual treatment in the holoendemic focus of Asubende in Ghana, which was the largest trial area and which also had the longest series of follow-up surveys. The general observed pattern was a marked reductio

Observations on population density of Culex quinquefasciatus and transmission indices of Bancroftian filariasis during and after Integrated Vector Management strategy.

An Integrated Vector Management strategy, implemented as an alternative to the conventional control operations that include mainly chemical control in Pondicherry, South India, reduced very substantially the population density of Culex quinquefasciatus. This resulted in drastic decrease in the intensity of transmission of bancroftian filariasis transmitted by Culex quinquefasciatus and consequently the incidence of new infections in children of 0-5 age group was minimized. When the IVM strategy was withdrawn after five years of implementation and conventional control measures were re-adopted,

Studies on malaria and responses of Anopheles balabacensis balabacensis and Anopheles minimus to DDT residual spraying in Thailand.

Studies on malaria and on A. b. balabacensis and A. minimus responses to DDT spraying were conducted in a forested hilly area in northern Thailand. In a first phase, base-line data were collected from July 1970 to March 1972. In a second phase, the study area received five round of DDT spraying over a period of two years and at the same time all malaria infections received radical treatment. During this two-year period of field operations, entomological and epidemiological observations were continued. The studies carried out in the second phase, showed that malaria transmission decreased under

Effect of topical agents on cercariae of Schistosoma mansoni.

DEET (N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide) is one of the reliable and most widely used insect repellents. The present work was planed to evaluate the effect of free DEET, controlled release DEET and white precipitate ointment on the viability of cercariae of S. mansoni in-vitro. They were also topically applied to mice to study their efficiency in preventing cercarial skin penetration. Free DEET and controlled release DEET formula caused immobilization and death of cercariae within twenty and five minutes respectively. The number of adults detected after application of free DEET and white precipitate oin

Risk factors for malaria infection among rubber tappers living in a malaria control program area in southern Thailand.

Rubber tappers work begins at midnight during the feeding time of Anopheles maculatus and An. minimus, two common malaria vectors in southern Thailand. We studied the association between rubber tapper behavior and malaria infections as reported to the Notified Disease Surveillance System during 2010 in Prachuab Khiri Khan Province, Thailand. In that province insecticide treated bednets are distributed free to the population and insecticide residual spraying is performed annually. A random sample of 394 rubber tapper households was interviewed from October 2010 to May 2011. Twenty-six household

Improvement of cattle productivity through rapid alleviation of African animal trypanosomosis by integrated disease management practices in the agropastoral zone of Yalé, Burkina Faso.

Investigations to identify the causes of high mortalities in cattle in the agropastoral zone (ZAP) of Yalé started in March 1993. African animal trypanosomosis (AAT) was found to be the major constraint, with incidence rates exceeding 30%, justifying a tsetse control programme, which started in March/ April 1994. The treatment of all cattle at bimonthly intervals with deltamethrin 1% pour on and the display of 1500 insecticide impregnated targets during the 6 months of the dry season each year helped to reduce the tsetse populations (Glossina tachinoides and G. morsitans submorsitans) by more

Adjuvant properties of baculovirus enhance the immunogenicity and protective efficacy of foot-and-mouth disease virus-like particles vaccines in mice.

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is one of the most economically relevant livestock diseases worldwide due to the rapid spread of its etiological agent, Foot-and-mouth Disease Virus (FMDV), and the severe economic losses associated with outbreaks. Virus-like particle (VLP)-based vaccines represent a safe alternative to conventional inactivated vaccines; however, their limited immunogenicity remains a drawback. Baculoviruses naturally infect insects and are non-replicative in vertebrates, possess strong intrinsic immunostimulatory properties and can function as vaccine adjuvants. In this study, we

Edge effects on parasitoid hymenopteran biodiversity in canola fields.

Parasitoid hymenopterans are highly valuable pest control agents. Despite their necessity within the agriculture industry, they remain one of the most understudied groups of insects. Non-crop habitats adjacent to farmland provide critical ecological services for these beneficial insects and can act as a corridor from uncultivated land to fields; this interaction is a form of edge effect. Here, we evaluate how 3 types of non-crop field edges affected the diversity, richness, and abundance of parasitoid hymenopterans at varying edge distances in canola (Brassica napus L.; Brassicales: Brassicace

Characterization of the Yellow Gene Family in Nilaparvata lugens and Functional Analysis of NlYellow-b.

Members of the yellow gene family encode conserved Yellow proteins with diverse roles in insect pigmentation, cuticle formation, and reproduction, making them promising targets for RNA interference (RNAi)-mediated pest control strategies. However, little is known about their phylogeny and functions in the brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens), a devastating rice pest that serves as a vector for viral rice diseases. Here, we identified and characterized 11 yellow genes in N. lugens, which showed distinct structures and expression profiles. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that N. lugens has reta

Seven up regulates reproductive diapause initiation via juvenile hormone biosynthesis in the cabbage beetle Colaphellus bowringi.

Reproductive diapause is an insect survival strategy in which reproduction temporarily halts in response to adverse environmental changes. This process is characterized by arrested ovarian development and lipid accumulation in females. A reduction in juvenile hormone (JH) biosynthesis is known to initiate reproductive diapause, but its regulatory mechanism remains unclear. Seven up (Svp), a transcription factor from the nuclear receptor family, plays a crucial role in various developmental processes in insects. In this study, using the cabbage beetle Colaphellus bowringi as a model, we observe

Parasitoid Calyx Fluid and Venom Affect Bacterial Communities in Their Lepidopteran Host Labial Salivary Glands.

The influence of gut and gonad bacterial communities on insect physiology, behaviour, and ecology is increasingly recognised. Parasitism by parasitoid wasps alters many physiological processes in their hosts, including gut bacterial communities. However, it remains unclear whether these changes are restricted to the gut or also occur in other tissues and fluids, and the mechanisms underlying such changes are unknown. We hypothesise that host microbiome changes result from the injection of calyx fluid (that contain symbiotic viruses known as polydnaviruses) and venom during parasitoid ovipositi

Sublethal exposure of emamectin benzoate and thiamethoxam alters the biological parameters and genes expression in Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae).

Excessive use of agrochemicals results in contamination of water due to runoff or leaching. Insecticide induced-hormesis, a phenomenon characterized by low dose stimulation following exposure to insecticide, is crucial to insect pest resurgence. In this study, the effects of low or sublethal concentrations of emamectin benzoate and thiamethoxam on biological traits and genes expression were investigated for yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti following 48 h exposures. Bioassay was conducted to compute LC10 and LC20 values for both test insecticides. The low lethal (LC10) and sublethal (LC20)

Hawkmoths regulate flight torques with their abdomen for yaw control.

Many animals use body parts such as tails to stabilize posture while moving at high speed. In flying insects, leg or abdominal inertia can influence flight posture. In the hawkmoth Manduca sexta, the abdomen contributes ∼50% of the total body weight and it can therefore serve to inertially redirect flight forces. How do torques generated by the wings and abdomen interact for flight control? We studied the yaw optomotor response of M. sexta by using a torque sensor attached to their thorax. In response to yaw visual motion, the abdomen moved antiphase with the stimulus, head and total torque. B

Pelgipeptins, a Nonribosomal Lipopeptide Family, Show Larvicidal Activity against Vectors Transmitting Viruses.

Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus are vectors of numerous diseases of worldwide public importance, such as arboviruses and filariasis. The main strategy for controlling these vectors is the use of chemicals, which can induce the appearance of resistant insects. The use of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) and Lysinibacillus sphaericus (Ls) with larvicidal activity against arboviral-transmitting insects has been successful in many studies. In contrast, the use and knowledge of peptides with insecticidal activity are so far scarce. In this work, 25 peptides and 5 strains of each bacterial speci

Reproduction does not impede the stopover departure to ensure a potent migration in Cnaphalocrocis medinalis moths.

Despite the importance of reproduction in insects, its relation with multi-stop flight remains poorly understood in migratory species. To clarify whether reproductive maturation commences during the multi-stop flight or after the completion of migration, we conducted physiological and behavioral assays in the rice leaf roller Cnaphalocrocis medinalis with laboratory-simulated conditions and field-captured populations. We found that the ovarian development was significantly promoted by tethered flight treatment for 1-2 nights when compared to the unflown group, while the flight muscle developme
