Cognitive processing of semantic mismatch in Chinese reading: the moderating effect of contextual constraint.

BACKGROUND: Semantic mismatch processing is fundamental to language comprehension, yet how contextual constraint modulates this processing in Chinese reading remains unclear. The present study investigated the cognitive processing of semantic mismatch in Chinese modifier-noun constructions and examined the moderating effect of contextual constraint. METHODS: Forty-eight native Mandarin Chinese speakers read sentences containing semantically matched or mismatched modifier-noun constructions embedded in high- or low-constraint contexts while their eye movements were recorded using an EyeLink 10

A Spanish-language Adaptation of the Brief Wisconsin Inventory of Smoking Dependence Motives Among Mexican and Mexican-American Adults Who Smoke.

INTRODUCTION: The smoking pattern of Latino smokers differs from non-Latino white smokers such that physical dependence may not be a strong motivator for smoking among Latinos. Multidimensional measures of dependence may be more useful, but there is a lack of psychometrically sound multidimensional Spanish-language measures. This study evaluated the psychometric properties of a Spanish-language adaptation of the Brief Wisconsin Inventory of Dependence Motives (Brief WISDM) for use among Spanish-speaking Latino smokers in the United States. METHODS: Two hundred and eighty-seven Spanish-speakin

Language biomarker screening using AI: a transdiagnostic approach to the brain.

Individuals with left-hemisphere damage (LHD), right-hemisphere damage (RHD), dementia, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), traumatic brain injury (TBI), and healthy controls are characterized by overlapping clinical profiles affecting communication and social interaction. Language provides a rich, non-invasive window into neurological health, yet objective and scalable methods to automatically differentiate between conditions with are lacking. This method aims to develop comprehensive neurolinguistic measures of these conditions, develop a machine learning multiclass screening and language asses

An Intelligent Real-Time System for Sentence-Level Recognition of Continuous Saudi Sign Language Using Landmark-Based Temporal Modeling.

A persistent challenge for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing individuals is the communication gap between sign language users and the hearing community, particularly in regions with limited automated translation resources. In Saudi Arabia, this gap is amplified by the reliance on Saudi Sign Language (SSL) and the scarcity of real-time, sentence-level translation systems. This paper presents a real-time system for sentence-level recognition of continuous SSL and direct mapping to natural spoken Arabic. The proposed system operates end-to-end on live video streams or pre-recorded content, extracting spat

Clinician-perceived clinical accuracy and guideline alignment of ChatGPT responses to patient questions on HPV and CIN: a two-year comparative evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT are increasingly used by patients to obtain medical information, particularly for human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), where patients seek explanations on diagnosis, risk, screening, and follow-up. The clinical usefulness of chatbot-generated information depends not only on the accuracy but also on its perceived relevance to clinical practice. This study evaluated perceived clinical accuracy and perceived alignment with clinical consensus of ChatGPT responses to common patient questions on HP…

Revisiting the noun bias: How frequency explains cross-linguistic differences in noun and verb production across early childhood.

Frequency of occurrence is one of the main drivers of children's early vocabularies. However, multiple authors have concluded that it fails to account for one of the most important phenomena in word learning-the order in which children acquire nouns and verbs. Across many languages, there is an early noun bias despite nouns occurring far less frequently than verbs in caregiver speech. In this study we use large-scale caregiver-child corpora and a computational model to reexamine noun and verb learning in English, German, Spanish, and Mandarin. Our results show clear evidence for variations in

Functional neuroanatomy of language without speech: An ALE meta-analysis of sign language.

Sign language (SL) conveys linguistic information using gestures instead of sounds. Here, we apply a meta-analytic estimation approach to neuroimaging studies (N = 23; subjects = 316) and ask whether SL comprehension in deaf signers relies on the same primarily left-hemispheric cortical network implicated in spoken and written language (SWL) comprehension in hearing speakers. We show that: (a) SL recruits bilateral fronto-temporo-occipital regions with strong left-lateralization in the posterior inferior frontal gyrus known as Broca's area, mirroring functional asymmetries observed for SWL. (b

Co-Occurrence of Reading and Writing Difficulties: The Application of the Interactive Dynamic Literacy Model.

This article presents the application of the interactive dynamic literacy (IDL) model (Kim, 2020b) toward understanding difficulties in learning to read and write. According to the IDL model, reading and writing are part of communicative acts that draw on largely shared processes and skills as well as unique processes and skills. As such, reading and writing are dissociable but interdependent systems that have hierarchical, interactive, and dynamic relations. These key tenets of the IDL model are applied to the disruption of reading and writing development to explain co-occurrence of reading-w

Four dimensions of naturalistic language production in aphasia after stroke.

There is a rich tradition of research on the neuroanatomical correlates of spoken language production in aphasia using constrained tasks (e.g. picture naming), which offer controlled insights into the distinct processes that govern speech and language (i.e. lexical-semantic access, morphosyntactic construction, phonological encoding, speech motor programming/execution). Yet these tasks do not necessarily reflect everyday language use. In contrast, naturalistic language production (also referred to as 'connected speech' or 'discourse') more closely approximates typical processing demands, requi

Factors influencing Chinese cultural identity among new generations of ethnic Chinese in Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand: a comparative Study.

INTRODUCTION: The cultural identity of overseas Chinese populations, particularly new generations born and raised in their host societies, has become an increasingly important topic in globalization research. Previous studies have largely focused on Western immigrant populations, with limited attention to non-Western, non-migrant communities such as new-generation ethnic Chinese in Southeast Asia. Moreover, prior research has tended to examine language and media factors in isolation. To address these gaps, this study proposes an integrative model examining how Chinese content exposure, large s
