This study analyses the severity and distribution of mineralization defects in the dentin of red and roe deer teeth (mandibular fourth premolars, first and third molars) obtained from individuals that had lived in a fluoride-polluted area along the Czech-German border. Mineralization defects presented as hypomineralized or interglobular dentin. In the P(4)s and M(3)s the entire dentin exhibited areas of defective mineralization, whereas in the M(1)s only the central and inner dentin portions were affected. This suggests that the early periods of dentin formation in the first molar, occurring d

Twelve arteriovenous malformations of the dental arcades (AVMDAs) (seven mandibular and five maxillary) were seen in our institution between 1977 and 1997. All these lesions consisted of true arteriovenous shunts (of either nidus or fistulous type) involving the bone, with or without soft tissue extension. Haemorrhage was present in eight patients (67%); either torrential, necessitating emergency embolization, or recurrent and progressive. Teeth instability was detected in all patients and was the origin of the bleeding. All lesions were embolized. Lesions in nine patients were embolized with

Over a period of 3 years, 50 consecutive free fibular flaps for mandibular reconstruction were performed on 47 patients. In 38 patients (81%) a skin paddle was included with the flap to provide either mucosal lining or skin cover; in 9 patients (19%) bone alone was used. Thirty-one patients (66%) required a skin graft to close the donor defect in the leg. Donor leg morbidity and function were determined by patient questionnaire and by physical examination. Forty-one donor sites in 40 patients were available for long-term follow-up. The follow-up ranged from 4 to 39 months with an average of 17…

Total nasal reconstruction is a challenging surgical procedure which usually involves a free flap, forehead flap, and cartilage grafts. In certain failure situations where patients do not accept the idea of anaplastology, possibilities become very limited. We report the case of a patient who underwent several reconstruction steps with multiple failures including free and local flaps and cartilage harvests which showed recurrent episodes of necrosis and infection leading to melting and collapse of reconstructed structures. Furthermore, the patient did not want any anaplastological rehabilitatio

Three-dimensional (3D) planning is becoming a more commonly used tool in maxillofacial surgery. At first used only virtually, 3D planning now also enables the creation of useful intraoperative aids such as cutting guides, which decrease the operative difficulty. In our center, we have used 3D planning in various domains of facial surgery and have investigated the advantages of this technique. We have also addressed the difficulties associated with its use. 3D planning increases the accuracy of reconstructive surgery, decreases operating time, whilst maintaining excellent esthetic results. BACKGROUND: Severe alveolar ridge defects in the mandibular anterior region, often associated with congenital tooth absence and subsequent loss of retained primary teeth, present significant challenges for implant rehabilitation. Limited space, horizontal ridge deficiency, and complex site anatomy often require a multidisciplinary approach to achieve stable hard- and soft-tissue outcomes.
METHODS: A 30-year-old woman presented with absence of teeth #23 and #25, distal rotation of tooth #24, and insufficient mesiodistal space for implant placement. After 15 months of orthodontic space creation

BACKGROUND: A comprehensive analysis of the occlusal plane (OP) inclination in predicting anteroposterior mandibular position (APMP) changes is still lacking. This study aimed to analyse the relationships between inclinations of different OPs and APMP metrics and explore the feasibility of OP inclination in predicting changes in APMP.
METHODS: Overall, 115 three-dimensional (3D) models were reconstructed using deep learning-based cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) segmentation, and their accuracy in supporting cusps was compared with that of intraoral scanning models. The anatomical landmar

The role of mechanical stress in determining bone structure by influencing its cellular processes during remodeling has been discussed. But previous studies have not provided an adequate background of knowledge to explain the effect of orthodontic force in internal remodeling of the bones. This study was performed to determine the relationship between stress distribution induced by orthodontic force and alteration of internal remodeling in mandibular bone. Seven young adult mongrel dogs of unknown age were used as experimental animals. The bilateral lower 4th premolars were extracted. After 10

This report describes a case in which a removable partial mandibular denture made of polycarbonate resin was fabricated using a computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) system for a patient with microstomia and trismus caused by scar contracture in the maxillofacial region after multiple tumor resections and reconstructive surgeries. The patient was an 82-year-old woman with a history of multiple oral cancer surgeries and radiotherapy. She presented with a markedly narrow oral aperture circumference (145 mm) and had no prior experience with dentures. Given the difficulty of applying c

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Dentigerous cysts are among the most common odontogenic cysts, with a postoperative recurrence rate of approximately 5 %-15 %. Large dentigerous cysts present significant clinical challenges due to extensive lesions and severe bone destruction, often resulting in inadequate bone volume and poor soft-tissue conditions for subsequent implant restoration.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 71-year-old male presented with a history of a giant right mandibular dentigerous cyst diagnosed 12 years prior, treated by affected tooth extraction and cyst marsupialization (windowing drainag

OBJECTIVES: Temporary tracheostomies (TT) are often used in oral oncologic surgery to secure the postoperative airway. Our primary objective was to determine if there was an over-indication for elective tracheostomy in our population. If so, our secondary objective was to ascertain which patients could have possibly avoided TT.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of patients with oral and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma in which resection with curative intent and TT were performed. Variables collected included demographics, comorbidities, and complications. Additio
