Eye movements of university students with and without reading difficulties during naming speed tasks.

Although naming speed (NS) has been shown to predict reading into adulthood and differentiate between adult dyslexics and controls, the question remains why NS is related to reading. To address this question, eye movement methodology was combined with three letter NS tasks (the original letter NS task by Denckla & Rudel, Cortex 10:186-202, 1974, and two more developed by Compton, The Journal of Special Education 37:81-94, 2003, with increased phonological or visual similarity of the letters). Twenty undergraduate students with reading difficulties (RD) and 27 without (NRD) were tested on lette

An objective index of individual face discrimination in the right occipito-temporal cortex by means of fast periodic oddball stimulation.

We introduce an approach based on fast periodic oddball stimulation that provides objective, high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and behavior-free measures of the human brain's discriminative response to complex visual patterns. High-density electroencephalogram (EEG) was recorded for human observers presented with 60s sequences containing a base-face (A) sinusoidally contrast-modulated at a frequency of 5.88 Hz (F), with face size varying every cycle. Different oddball-faces (B, C, D...) were introduced at fixed intervals (every 4 stimuli = F/5 = 1.18 Hz: AAAABAAAACAAAAD...). Individual face di

Impaired translation of spatial representation in young onset Alzheimer's disease patients.

BACKGROUND: Many early-stage Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients suffer from spatial navigational impairment even in familiar environments. Growing evidence shows that the retrosplenial cortex (RSC) is more damaged in young-onset AD patients (YOAD, onset age before 65) than in late-onset AD (LOAD) in the early-stage of AD. Impaired translation between egocentric and allocentric representations of the environment, as a cause for spatial navigational impairment, usually occurs in people with lesions in the RSC. OBJECTIVE: To test translational ability between spatial representations in early-stag

The effect of a Stroop-like task on postural control in dyslexic children.

The influence of a secondary task on concurrent postural control was explored in twenty-one dyslexic children (mean age: 10.4 ± 0.3 years). Data were compared with twenty age-matched non-dyslexic children. As a secondary task, a modified Stroop test was used, in which words were replaced with pictures of fruits. The postural control of children was recorded in standard Romberg condition as the children were asked to name the colour of fruits appearing consecutively on a computer screen. Two conditions were tested: a congruent condition, in which the fruit was drawn in its natural ripe colour,

Electrophysiological study of face inversion effects in Williams syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: In order to evaluate whether face perception is intact or not in Williams syndrome (WS), the face inversion effects (FIE) in the event-related potential (ERP) or magnetoencephalography (MEG) were investigated in three teenaged patients with WS. METHODS: Responses to the inverted faces and upright faces were compared using MEG for one 13year old girl with WS (subject A) and ERP for boys with WS at 16 and 14years of age (subjects B and C, respectively). RESULTS: Although age-matched control children showed FIE in both MEG and ERP studies, two subjects (A and B) with WS showed no FIE

Selective attention to facial emotion and identity in children with autism: evidence for global identity and local emotion.

The present study sought to test the global-identity and local-emotion processing hypothesis in face perception by examining emotional interference in face perception in children with high-functioning autism/Asperger's syndrome. Participants judged either the expression or the identity of faces while identity/expression was either held constant or varied (Garner paradigm). The results revealed that emotional expressions interfered with identity processing in face perception for autism spectrum disorder individuals. Taken together with previous findings, our results suggest that emotion judgmen

The influence of contrast on coherent motion processing in dyslexia.

The aim of the experiments was to investigate how manipulating the contrast of the signal and noise dots in a random dot kinematogram (RDK), influenced on motion coherence thresholds in adults with dyslexia. In the first of two experiments, coherent motion thresholds were measured when the contrasts of the signal and noise dots in an RDK were manipulated. A significantly greater processing benefit was found for the group with dyslexia than a control group when the signal dots were of higher contrast than the noise dots. However, a significant processing disadvantage was found for the group wit

The functional correlates of face perception and recognition of emotional facial expressions as evidenced by fMRI.

Recognition and processing of emotional facial expression are crucial for social behavior and employ higher-order cognitive and visual working processes. In neuropsychiatric disorders, impaired emotion recognition most frequently concerned three specific emotions, i.e., anger, fear, and disgust. As incorrect processing of (neutral) facial stimuli per se might also underlie deficits in the recognition of emotional facial expressions, we aimed to assess all these aspects in one experiment. We therefore report here a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) paradigm for parallel assessment of

A multiscale parallel computing architecture for automated segmentation of the brain connectome.

Several groups in neurobiology have embarked into deciphering the brain circuitry using large-scale imaging of a mouse brain and manual tracing of the connections between neurons. Creating a graph of the brain circuitry, also called a connectome, could have a huge impact on the understanding of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. Although considerably smaller than a human brain, a mouse brain already exhibits one billion connections and manually tracing the connectome of a mouse brain can only be achieved partially. This paper proposes to scale up the tracing by using autom

The effect of body posture on long-range time-to-contact estimation.

On Earth, gravity accelerates freely moving objects downward, whereas upward-moving objects are being decelerated. Do humans take internalised knowledge of gravity into account when estimating time-to-contact (TTC, the time remaining before the moving object reaches the observer)? To answer this question, we created a motion-prediction task in which participants saw the initial part of an object's trajectory moving on a collision course prior to an occlusion. Observers had to judge when the object would make contact with them. The visual scene was presented with a head-mounted display. Partici

Object-substitution masking modulates spatial attention deployment and the encoding of information in visual short-term memory: insights from occipito-parietal ERP components.

If object-substitution masking (OSM) arises from mask representations replacing target representations, OSM should impede the formation of representations in visual short-term memory (VSTM). We utilized event-related potentials to examine the effect of OSM on target processing. An N2pc was observed on trials with delayed-offset masks, indicating that focused attention was directed to the target. The sustained posterior contralateral negativity (SPCN), an index of VSTM storage, was observed in delayed-offset trials only on trials with correct responses. This supports the hypothesis that inaccur

Navon letters affect face learning and face retrieval.

Identifying the local letters of a Navon letter (a large letter made up of smaller different letters) prior to recognition causes impairment in accuracy, while identifying the global letters of a Navon letter causes an enhancement in recognition accuracy (Macrae & Lewis, 2002). This effect may result from a transfer-inappropriate processing shift (TIPS) (Schooler, 2002). The present experiment extends research on the underlying mechanism of this effect by exploring this Navon effect on face learning as well as face recognition. The results of the two experiments revealed that when the Navon ta

The relationship between visual crowding and letter confusability: towards an understanding of dyslexia in posterior cortical atrophy.

Visual crowding is a form of masking in which target identification is hindered by excessive feature integration from other stimuli in the vicinity. It has previously been suggested that excessive visual crowding constitutes one specific form of early-visual-processing deficit, which may be observed in individuals with posterior cortical atrophy (PCA). This study investigated whether excessive visual crowding plays a significant role in the acquired dyslexia of two PCA patients, whose reading was characterized by visual paralexias. The patients were administered a series of letter, flanked let

Object-based visual processing in children with spina bifida and hydrocephalus: a cognitive neuropsychological analysis.

The aim of the study was to use cognitive neuropsychological analysis to investigate object-based visual processing skills in children with spina bifida myelomeningocele and hydrocephalus (SBH). Fourteen children with SBH (aged 8-12) and 21 age-, socio-economic status-, and Verbal IQ-matched healthy controls were assessed using the Birmingham Object Recognition Battery. Overall, the performance of the children with SBH on the object-processing tasks was intact, indicating normal development of the ventral visual processing pathway. While the initial results indicated that the children with SBH

Size sequencing as a window on executive control in children with autism and Asperger's syndrome.

A study is reported in which size sequencing on a touch screen is used as a measure of executive control in 20 high-functioning children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD). The data show a significant and age-independent effect of the length of sequence that can be executed without errors by these children, in comparison with a chronologically age-matched group of children with normal development. Error data and reaction times are analysed and are interpreted as revealing a constraint on the prospective component of working memory in children on the autistic spectrum even when there is no

Free recall learning of hierarchically organised lists by adults with Asperger's syndrome: additional evidence for diminished relational processing.

The Task Support Hypothesis (TSH, Bowler et al. Neuropsychologia 35:65-70 1997) states that individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) show better memory when test procedures provide support for retrieval. The present study aimed to see whether this principle also applied at encoding. Twenty participants with high-functioning ASD and 20 matched comparison participants studied arrays of 112 words over four trials. Words were arranged either under hierarchically embedded category headings (e.g. Instruments-String-Plucked-Violin) or randomly. Both groups showed similar overall recall and bet

Developmental surface dyslexias.

Individuals with surface dyslexia read via grapheme-to-phoneme conversion due to a deficit in the lexical route. A deficit in the lexical route can be caused by impairments at several different loci. In the current study we identify three subtypes of developmental surface dyslexia, each caused by impairment at a different locus on the lexical route, and each showing a different pattern of performance in various tasks. All three subtypes show the classical pattern of reading aloud, with regularizations and difficulty in reading words that have more than a single possible conversion to a phoneme

Conjunctive visual search in individuals with and without mental retardation.

A comprehensive understanding of the basic visual and cognitive abilities of individuals with mental retardation is critical for understanding the basis of mental retardation and for the design of remediation programs. We assessed visual search abilities in individuals with mild mental retardation and in MA- and CA-matched comparison groups. Our goal was to determine the effect of decreasing target-distracter disparities on visual search efficiency. Results showed that search rates for the group with mental retardation and the MA-matched comparisons were more negatively affected by decreasing

Slowing down presentation of facial movements and vocal sounds enhances facial expression recognition and induces facial-vocal imitation in children with autism.

This study examined the effects of slowing down presentation of facial expressions and their corresponding vocal sounds on facial expression recognition and facial and/or vocal imitation in children with autism. Twelve autistic children and twenty-four normal control children were presented with emotional and non-emotional facial expressions on CD-Rom, under audio or silent conditions, and under dynamic visual conditions (slowly, very slowly, at normal speed) plus a static control. Overall, children with autism showed lower performance in expression recognition and more induced facial-vocal im
