Polygenic risk scores for antisocial behavior in relation to amygdala morphology across an attention deficit hyperactivity disorder case-control sample with and without disruptive behavior.

Antisocial and aggressive behaviors show considerable heritability and are central to disruptive behavior disorders (DBDs), but are also frequently observed in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). While the amygdala is implicated as a key neural structure, it remains unclear whether common genetic variants underlie this brain-behavior association. We hypothesized that polygenic (risk) scores for antisocial and aggressive behaviors (ASB-PRS) would be related to amygdala morphology. Using the Broad Antisocial Behavior Consortium genome-wide association study (GWAS; mostly population

Trajectories of sleep in Child Protective Services (CPS)-referred children predict externalizing and internalizing symptoms in early childhood.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have established links between poor sleep and negative developmental outcomes. However, it remains unclear whether young maltreated children demonstrate atypical sleep patterns and whether sleep duration is associated with emotional and behavioral problems. OBJECTIVE: Explore trajectories of sleep among Child Protective Services (CPS)-referred children and examine whether sleep duration is significantly associated with externalizing and internalizing symptoms, even when controlling for the home environment. PARTICIPANTS: Participants included 197 children (Mage a

The Associations between Callous-unemotional Traits and Symptoms of Conduct Problems, Hyperactivity and Emotional Problems: A Study of Adolescent Twins Screened for Neurodevelopmental Problems.

Callous-unemotional (CU) traits (e.g., lack of empathy, lack of guilt, shallow affect) are associated with severe and persistent conduct problems in youth. There is evidence showing a substantial genetic correlation between CU traits and conduct problems. The etiological associations between CU traits and other psychopathological symptoms, including symptoms of hyperactivity and emotional problems (such as anxiety and depression symptoms), have been less explored. To examine the etiological associations between CU traits and symptoms of conduct problems, hyperactivity and emotional problems se

Are Psychotherapies for Young People Growing Stronger? Tracking Trends Over Time for Youth Anxiety, Depression, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, and Conduct Problems.

With the development of empirically supported treatments over the decades, have youth psychotherapies grown stronger? To investigate, we examined changes over time in treatment effects for four frequently treated youth mental-health problems: anxiety, depression, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and conduct disorders. We used PubMed and PsycINFO to search for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that were published between January 1960 and May 2017 involving youths between the ages of 4 and 18 years. We also searched reviews and meta-analyses of youth psychotherapy research, fol

Ecological momentary assessment of contextual variables, satisfaction, and emotional and behavioral states of adolescents by level of victimization.

The harmful effects of victimization on mental health have been demonstrated in several age groups, cultures, and populations, but there is wide variability in the resulting psychopathology. Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) allows the expression of an emotional state to be recorded at any given time and linked to a situation or context. This study aimed to analyze the contextual variables (where, with whom, and what), momentary satisfaction, and perception of momentary emotional and behavioral symptoms in a cohort of adolescents by the level of victimization, using EMA. We explored the ev

A comparison of the clinical effectiveness and cost of specialised individually delivered parent training for preschool attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and a generic, group-based programme: a multi-centre, randomised controlled trial of the New Forest Parenting Programme versus Incredible Years.

The objective of this study is to compare the efficacy and cost of specialised individually delivered parent training (PT) for preschool children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) against generic group-based PT and treatment as usual (TAU). This is a multi-centre three-arm, parallel group randomised controlled trial conducted in National Health Service Trusts. The participants included in this study were preschool children (33-54 months) fulfilling ADHD research diagnostic criteria. COMT and prenatal maternal smoking in associations with conduct problems and crime: the Pelotas 1993 birth cohort study.

Conduct problems in childhood and adolescence are significant precursors of crime and violence in young adulthood. The purpose of the current study is to test the interaction between prenatal maternal smoking and COMT Val(158)Met in conduct problems and crime in the 1993 Pelotas Birth Cohort Study. Conduct problems were assessed through the parent version of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire at ages 11 and 15 years. A translated version of a confidential self-report questionnaire was used to collect criminal data at 18 years of age. Negative binomial regression analyses showed an as

Basic number processing and difficulties in single-digit arithmetic: evidence from Velo-Cardio-Facial Syndrome.

It has been suggested that mathematical disabilities (MD) emerge as a consequence of impairments in basic number processing skills. The aim of the present study was to investigate basic number processing skills in children with Velo-Cardio-Facial Syndrome (VCFS), a common genetic disorder with a high prevalence of MD, and to examine whether these basic low-level skills account for their performance in single-digit arithmetic. Twenty-five children with VCFS and 25 individually matched controls (age range: 6-12 years) participated. They all completed two basic number processing tasks (number rea

Self-injury: a research review for the practitioner.

Non-suicidal self-injury is the intentional destruction of body tissue without suicidal intent and for purposes not socially sanctioned. In this practice-friendly review, the authors summarize the empirical research on who self-injures, why people self-injure, and what treatments have demonstrated effectiveness. Self-injury is more common in adolescents and young adults as compared to adults. Common forms include cutting, severe scratching, burning, and banging or hitting; most individuals who self-injure have used more than one method. Although diagnostically heterogeneous, self-injurers typi

Perspectives of probabilistic inferences: Reinforcement learning and an adaptive network compared.

The assumption that people possess a strategy repertoire for inferences has been raised repeatedly. The strategy selection learning theory specifies how people select strategies from this repertoire. The theory assumes that individuals select strategies proportional to their subjective expectations of how well the strategies solve particular problems; such expectations are assumed to be updated by reinforcement learning. The theory is compared with an adaptive network model that assumes people make inferences by integrating information according to a connectionist network. The network's weight

Executive functioning deficits in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder are independent of oppositional defiant or reading disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate deficits of executive functions in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) classified by type (combined [CT] or predominantly inattentive [IT]) and comorbidity with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and reading disorder (RD). METHOD: The Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) and Tower of Hanoi (TOH) were administered to 28 community volunteers and 359 children (7.5-13.5 years old) divided into ADHD types, RD, and ODD. RESULTS: ADHD/CT children solved fewer puzzles and violated more rules on the TOH than ADHD/IT or non-ADHD subjects. On the WCST the

How to make research happen: working with staff.

Implementing a research project in a clinical nursing unit requires the researcher to gain cooperation and support from administration, physicians, and the nursing staff. In this article the site coordinators from the Transition of the Preterm Infant to an Open Crib research-utilization project share their strategies for generating support, energizing the staff nurses, assuring compliance with the study, resolving problems, and bringing the project to closure. Many of the strategies used can be applied to other research projects by nurse researchers interested in using clinical nursing units a

Self-treatment of bulimia nervosa: a pilot study.

Twenty-eight patients with ICD-10 bulimia nervosa or atypical bulimia nervosa were given a cognitive-behavioral treatment handbook and were reassessed 4-6 weeks later. On a clinician-rated global improvement scale 12 patients had much improved and 8 patients had somewhat improved. Fifteen patients were abstinent of vomiting or laxatives at reassessment as opposed to five patients before treatment. Of the 21 patients who were bringing before treatment, 7 had a 75-100% reduction of binges and 5 had a 50-75% reduction of binges. Patients' nutritional knowledge increased significantly. Behavior Regulation Abilities in Children With Prader-Willi Syndrome and Their Impact on Daily Life: At the Crossroads of Cognitive and Emotional Development.

PURPOSE: Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) is a rare, complex, genetic neurodevelopmental disorder that induces a hypothalamic dysfunction with a global developmental delay and specific trajectories. Behavioral and psychiatric disorders are recurrent in PWS, emerging during childhood and varying considerably in their manifestations. This study aimed to gain a better understanding of the relationship between emotion, cognitive and behavioral regulation abilities in children with PWS, and explore the impact on daily life. METHODS: Twenty-five children with PWS aged between 9 and 15 took part in the s

Anabolic-androgenic steroid use is associated with psychopathy, risk-taking, anger, and physical problems.

Previous research has uncovered medical and psychological effects of anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS) use, but the specific relationship between AAS use and risk-taking behaviors as well as between AAS use and psychopathic tendencies remains understudied. To explore these potential relationships, we anonymously recruited 492 biologically male, self-identified bodybuilders (median age 22; range 18-47 years) from online bodybuilding fora to complete an online survey on Appearance and Performance Enhancing Drug (APED) use, psychological traits, lifestyle choices, and health behaviors. We compute

Contribution of the hippocampus to performance on the traveling salesperson problem in rats.

The Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) is an optimization problem in which the subject attempts to find the shortest possible route that passes through a set of fixed locations exactly once. The TSP is used in cognitive and behavioral research to study problem solving and spatial navigation. While the TSP has been studied in some depth from this perspective, the biological mechanisms underlying the behavior have not yet been explored. The hippocampus is a structure in the brain that is known to be involved in tasks that require spatial memory. Because the TSP requires spatial problem solving, we

Child behavior checklist clinical scales discriminate referred youth with autism spectrum disorder: a preliminary study.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the properties of clinical scales of the Child Behavior Checklist in discriminating referred children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) (autistic disorder, Asperger's disorder, and pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified) from psychiatrically referred children without ASDs. METHOD: Comparisons were made between children with ASDs (n = 65) with intelligence quotient >70 and children without ASDs (N = 83) on the clinical scales of the Child Behavior Checklist. Stepwise logistic regression was used to identify those scales that best predicted ASDs when

Associations between sleep and cortisol responses to stress in children and adolescents: a pilot study.

A growing body of animal and human research suggests reciprocal associations between sleep and activity of the hypothalamic pituitary adrenocortical (HPA) axis. However, few studies have examined associations between sleep and stress-induced cortisol responses in children and adolescents. This pilot study examined associations among 3 sleep parameters (sleep-wake behavior problems, daytime sleepiness, sleep quantity) and cortisol responses to stress in 31 participants ages 10 to 17 (15 males, 16 females). During a "rest" session in which participants habituated to the laboratory, daytime sleep

Maternal depressive symptoms and homeless children's mental health: risk and resiliency.

Homelessness places children at risk for mental health problems. Maternal depression may influence child outcomes through its effects on the mother-child relationship. This study examined the relationship between maternal depressive symptoms and child mental health in a sample of homeless mothers and their preschool children. The relationship between maternal depressive symptoms and child behavior problems was not significant. The data suggest that mental health services for homeless mothers and their young children are needed. However, 70% of the children in this sample had no behavior proble
