OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of "ring suture technique" during partial nephrectomy in the management of renal cell cancer located in renal hilar.
METHODS: The data of 31 patients with renal cell cancer located in renal hilar who underwent partial nephrectomy from January 2009 to January 2014 in Peking University First Hospital were collected. PURPOSES: To evaluate in an animal model the feasibility of a novel concept of hand-assisted surgery consisting of inserting two hands into the abdomen instead of one. The chosen procedure was retroperitoneal lymph node dissection (L-RPLND) that was performed in five pigs.
SURGICAL TECHNIQUE: A Pfannestiel and a transverse epigastric incisions were made through which both hands were introduced. The scope was inserted through the umbilicus. The colon was moved medially and the dissection was performed as in open surgery using short conventional surgical instruments.

Spontaneous massive retroperitoneal hemorrhage from an adrenal tumor is rare and is usually fatal if unrecognized. We report a case of spontaneous rupture of a primary adrenocortical carcinoma that occurred in a 79-year-old man. He visited our hospital with left abdominal pain. Computed tomography (CT) showed a left retroperitoneal hemorrhage. We could not find the origin of this hemorrhage. Two months later, CT showed the left adrenal tumor, and left adrenalectomy and nephrectomy were performed successfully. The histological diagnosis was adrenocortical carcinoma. PURPOSE: To investigate the efficacy of curative chemoradiotherapy for isolated retroperitoneal lymph node recurrence of colorectal cancer.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-two colorectal cancer patients who received three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (n=20) or helical tomotherapy (n=2) for isolated retroperitoneal lymph node recurrence were analyzed retrospectively. Radiation dose was 55.8Gy in 31 fractions or 63Gy in 35 fractions, and 60Gy in 20 fractions by helical tomotherapy. All patients received concurrent chemotherapy and 16 (72.7%) received adjuvant chemotherapy.

Scrotal hematoma is a rare and unusual complication of transfemoral cardiac catheterization. We describe the case of a 43-year-old man who presented with a delayed retroperitoneal hemorrhage and massive scrotal hematoma following cardiac catheterization. Emergent groin exploration was performed with ligation of the inferior epigastric artery and evacuation of the scrotal hematoma. Urological sequelae from transfemoral arterial access are rare. However, scrotal hematoma may occur if bleeding occurs between anatomic fascial planes.

OBJECTIVE: Posterior retroperitoneoscopic adrenalectomy (PRA) is a minimally invasive approach to removal of the adrenal gland. This anatomically direct approach, popularized by Walz, minimizes dissection and affords early access to the adrenal vein. We report the largest experience to date of PRA in the United States.
METHODS: The prospective endocrine surgery database at a tertiary care center was used to capture all patients who underwent PRA between October 2005 and February 2008. All PRA procedures were performed using a 3-trocar technique with the patient in a prone jackknife position.

METHODS: A total of 16 patients with retroperitoneal bleeding who underwent angiography followed by transcatheter embolization within a 4-year period in a single centre were reviewed retrospectively. In this article an overview is given of the present knowledge of whole body MRI, MRI of the retroperitoneum, intestines and pelvis. Recommendations are based on current literature and clinical applications in daily routine focusing on efficacy rather than cost considerations. The contribution and complementary role of MRI relative to those of its competing modalities was the most important endpoint assessed. Perfusion and functional information, as well as specific contrast agents in the area of the pelvis are still considered research indications.

A 75 year-old woman presented to the authors' institution with abdominal pain and early satiety. An adrenal mass was found on CT scanning. Laparoscopic adrenalectomy was performed, and the patient was found to have a retroperitoneal bronchogenic cyst adherent to the adrenal gland. The workup of an adrenal mass is discussed as well as the pathophysiology of bronchogenic cysts.

Isolated extrarenal retroperitoneal and renal echinococcal cysts are rare manifestations of hydatid disease. We report 23 cases of renal and other retroperitoneal hydatid cysts diagnosed and treated in our clinic.
