Use of virtual 3-dimensional surgery in post-traumatic craniomaxillofacial reconstruction.

Traumatic craniofacial injuries often present as difficult reconstructive challenges for maxillofacial surgeons. Reconstruction is often complicated by significant soft tissue loss, comminuted bony fragments, a tenuous blood supply, and wound contamination. For panfacial injuries, restoration of normal facial width, facial height, and sagittal projection may be difficult to achieve. Marked swelling may limit the surgeons' ability to palpate and recognize subtle bony defects and malunion. Furthermore, a true 3-dimensional assessment of bony alignment may not be possible with traditional surgica

Investigating singing imagery as an additional or alternative control task for EEG-based Brain-Computer Interfaces.

INTRODUCTION: Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) provide a movement-free means of communication and control, typically based on motor imagery (MI) tasks of hand, foot, or tongue movements. Most BCI studies focus on classifying up to four such tasks, which limits the number of available commands and restricts overall system functionality. Expanding the range of reliable mental tasks would directly increase the number of possible commands and thereby enhance the practical utility of BCIs. Singing imagery (SI) may offer an intuitive alternative or additional task to complement conventional MI parad

Beyond flickering: introducing code-modulated motion visual evoked potentials for brain-computer interfacing.

This study presents a novel code-modulated motion visual evoked potential (c-MVEP) paradigm for brain-computer interfacing (BCI). To avoid the visual discomfort and fatigue often associated with traditional flickering stimuli, this paradigm uses pseudo-random sequences to visually stimulate objects using motion. We conducted offline and online experiments, to investigate signal characteristics and evaluate practical feasibility, respectively. In the offline experiment, EEG data were recorded and compared during sequential stimulation of a single target under four conditions: c-MVEP, code-modul

Online Adaptive Hyperthermia Treatment Planning During Locoregional Heating to Suppress Treatment-Limiting Hot Spots.

BACKGROUND: Adequate tumor temperatures during hyperthermia are essential for good clinical response, but excessive heating of normal tissue should be avoided. This makes locoregional heating using phased array systems technically challenging. Online application of hyperthermia treatment planning could help to improve the heating quality. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical benefit of online treatment planning during treatment of pelvic tumors heated with the AMC-8 locoregional hyperthermia system. METHODS: For online adaptive hyperthermia treatment planning, a graphical user i

Optimal positioning and size of high-density electrocorticography grids for speech brain-computer interfaces.

OBJECTIVE: Speech-based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) can offer an intuitive communication method for those who have lost the ability to speak due to paralysis. Significant progress has been made in classifying individual words from high numbers of electrocorticographic (ECoG) electrodes on the sensorimotor cortex (SMC). As implantations of larger grids with more ECoG electrodes are associated with higher surgical risk, we investigated whether confined electrode configurations can match the classification accuracy of larger grids. METHODS: We analyzed data from eight able-bodied participan

Paradigms and methods of noninvasive brain-computer interfaces in motor or communication assistance and rehabilitation: a systematic review.

Noninvasive brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have rapidly developed over the past decade. This new technology utilizes magneto-electrical recording or hemodynamic imaging approaches to acquire neurophysiological signals noninvasively, such as electroencephalography (EEG) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). These noninvasive signals have different temporal resolutions ranging from milliseconds to seconds and various spatial resolutions ranging from centimeters to millimeters. Thanks to these neuroimaging technologies, various BCI modalities like steady-state visual evoked potenti

Integrating Motor Unit Activity With Deep Learning for Real-Time, Simultaneous and Proportional Wrist Angle and Grasp Force Estimation.

OBJECTIVE: Myoelectric prostheses offer great promise in enabling amputees to perform daily activities independently. However, existing neural interfaces generally cannot simultaneously and proportionally decode kinematics and kinetics in real time, nor can they directly interpret neural commands. We thus propose a novel framework that integrates motor unit activity with deep learning and demonstrate its efficiency in the real-time, simultaneous, and proportional estimation of wrist angles and grasp forces. METHODS: This framework utilizes real-time high-density surface electromyography decom

HIResist: a database of HIV-1 resistance to broadly neutralizing antibodies.

MOTIVATION: Changing the course of the human immunodeficiency virus type I (HIV-1) pandemic is a high public health priority with approximately 39 million people currently living with HIV-1 (PLWH) and about 1.5 million new infections annually worldwide. Broadly neutralizing antibodies (bnAbs) typically target highly conserved sites on the HIV-1 envelope glycoproteins (Envs), which mediate viral entry, and block the infection of diverse HIV-1 strains. But different mechanisms of HIV-1 resistance to bnAbs prevent robust application of bnAbs for therapeutic and preventive interventions. RESULTS:

Intracortical brain-computer interfaces for improved motor function: a systematic review.

In this systematic review, we address the status of intracortical brain-computer interfaces (iBCIs) applied to the motor cortex to improve function in patients with impaired motor ability. This study followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 Guidelines for Systematic Reviews. Risk Of Bias In Non-randomized Studies - of Interventions (ROBINS-I) and the Effective Public Health Practice Project (EPHPP) were used to assess bias and quality. Advances in iBCIs in the last two decades demonstrated the use of iBCI to activate limbs for functional tas

Automated and data-driven plate computation for presurgical cleft lip and palate treatment.

PURPOSE: Presurgical orthopedic plates are widely used for the treatment of cleft lip and palate, which is the most common craniofacial birth defect. For the traditional plate fabrication, an impression is taken under airway-endangering conditions, which recent digital alternatives overcome via intraoral scanners. However, these alternatives demand proficiency in 3D modeling software in addition to the generally required clinical knowledge of plate design. METHODS: We address these limitations with a data-driven and fully automated digital pipeline, endowed with a graphical user interface. Th

MERCAT: Visualising molecular epidemiology data combining genetic markers and drug resistance profiles.

Molecular epidemiology uses genetic information from bacterial isolates to shed light on the population structure and dynamics of pathogens. Bacterial pathogens can now be studied by whole genome sequencing, but for some well-studied pathogens such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis a wealth of information is also available from other sources such as spoligotyping and multi-locus variable-number-tandem-repeats (VNTR). Isolates are also frequently tested for susceptibility to antibiotics. Methods of analysis are available for each type of data but it would be informative to combine multiple sources

A gaze independent hybrid-BCI based on visual spatial attention.

OBJECTIVE: Brain-computer interfaces (BCI) use measures of brain activity to convey a user's intent without the need for muscle movement. Hybrid designs, which use multiple measures of brain activity, have been shown to increase the accuracy of BCIs, including those based on EEG signals reflecting covert attention. Our study examined whether incorporating a measure of the P3 response improved the performance of a previously reported attention-based BCI design that incorporates measures of steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEP) and alpha band modulations. APPROACH: Subjects viewed stimu

Fast retinal vessel detection and measurement using wavelets and edge location refinement.

The relationship between changes in retinal vessel morphology and the onset and progression of diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) has been the subject of several large scale clinical studies. However, the difficulty of quantifying changes in retinal vessels in a sufficiently fast, accurate and repeatable manner has restricted the application of the insights gleaned from these studies to clinical practice. This paper presents a novel algorithm for the efficient detection and measurement of retinal vessels, which is general enough that it can be applied

Online patient education and risk assessment: project OPERA from Cancerbackup. Putting inherited breast cancer risk information into context using argumentation theory.

OBJECTIVE: Many people are concerned about their family history of breast cancer, and are anxious about the possibility of developing breast cancer themselves. The majority of these people are likely not to be at significantly increased risk of developing inherited breast cancer. All women are at risk of developing sporadic breast cancer, and this risk increases with age. This project aims to aid people's understanding of these issues using an interactive online computer programme. METHODS: The UK National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence has published guidance for the National Hea

Potential problems associated with use of speech recognition products.

Commercial speech recognition products are being used increasingly as alternate input devices for computers, particularly by persons with physical disabilities. These discrete speech dictation systems require the user to insert brief but distinct pauses after each spoken word. Anecdotal evidence suggests that some persons using these products experience moderate to severe problems with their voices, such as hoarseness, sore throats, and even complete loss of voice. This preliminary study, which includes data gathered from survey dissemination and clinical studies, indicates that persons with c

Computer vision for pain detection during procedural sedation.

Continual automated pain detection from facial expressions using computer vision during procedural sedation could optimize sedation dose titration and minimize pain. A prospective observational study was conducted. Participants' faces were recorded during interventional radiology procedures performed with procedural sedation. Simultaneous pain assessments were made by a nurse using a sedation state assessment scale. Videos from 70 participants were used to train and evaluate a pain detection model using the Swin Transformer architecture. The model demonstrated an Area Under the Receiver Operat

Fast and accessible morphology-free functional fluorescence imaging analysis.

Optical calcium imaging is a powerful tool for recording neural activity across a wide range of spatial scales, from dendrites and spines to whole-brain imaging through two-photon and widefield microscopy. Traditional methods for analyzing functional calcium imaging data rely heavily on spatial features, such as the compact shapes of somas, to extract regions of interest and their associated temporal traces. This spatial dependency can introduce biases in time trace estimation and limit the applicability of these methods across different neuronal morphologies and imaging scales. To address the

Enhanced GPR imaging using high-resolution TR-MUSIC for underground object localization.

In this paper, we present a novel, high-resolution method, referred to as HRTR, for localizing underground objects. HRTR is based on a combination of the Time Reversal (TR) and Multiple Signal Classification (MUSIC) algorithms, and can be readily integrated with conventional ground-penetrating radar (GPR) systems without requiring any additional hardware. The proposed method offers significant advantages, particularly in achieving higher resolution, which enhances the ability to distinguish ground surface reflections and detect shallowly buried objects-challenges often encountered with convent
