A 66-year-old man with microcornea and microphthalmia required a corneal transplant for bullous keratopathy. The patient suffered from congenital cataracts and was left aphakic at the time of the original surgery because of the special challenge of operating on his eye. PURPOSE: To report a sutureless method of amniotic membrane fixation using fibrin glue in two cases of symptomatic bullous keratopathy with poor visual potential.
METHODS: Under topical anesthesia, the loose epithelium was debrided up to 1.0 mm from the limbus and fibrin glue was applied uniformly and thinly onto the corneal surface. Cryopreserved amniotic membrane was evenly placed over the cornea and once a firm and uniform adhesion was achieved, excess membrane was trimmed off. A bandage contact lens was applied.

Residual vitreous base after vitreoretinal surgery was evaluated by ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM). Twenty aphakic and pseudoaphakic patients (20 eyes) undergoing surgery for different vitreoretinal diseases were evaluated by high-frequency (50 MHz), high-resolution (50 microm) UBM, performed the day before surgery, weekly up to 1 month after surgery and then monthly. In a Macacus rhesus monkey an unilateral lensectomy was performed on the 15th day of life to study the emmetropization proces. During a period of 20.5 months refractional state, axial length, corneal dioptric power and intraocular pressure were measured in the aphakic and fellow eye. Results showed that axial elongation of the aphakic eye was larger in comparison to the phakic fellow eye. Histopathologic examination of the aphakic eye revealed glaucomatous changes due to obstruction in the anterior chamber angle.

BACKGROUND: Congenital cataract surgery can be performed using a pars plicata/plana or a limbal approach, if placement of an intraocular lens at the time of cataract removal is not a consideration. We recorded the electro-oculogram from 27 normal subjects by means of green and near-ultraviolet (UVA) stimulation. After a 40-minute dark-adaptation period, baseline responses were recorded.
