BACKGROUND: Parents commonly experience anxiety owing to their children's food allergies (FAs). Although FA-specific anxiety screening tools for adult and pediatric patients exist, a tool for parents with children with food allergy is lacking.
OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate a tool that measures parental anxiety related to their child's FA.
METHODS: To construct the instrument, items were developed based on consultations with stakeholders and review of existing literature. The instrument was then pilot tested, and items were modified based on relevance, importance, item-total correlations

Recent investigations show that many people affected by SARS-CoV2 (COVID-19) report persistent symptoms 2-3 months from the onset of the infection. Here, we report the Italian findings from the second International COVID-19 Sleep Study survey, aiming to investigate sleep and dream alterations in participants with post-acute symptoms, and identify the best determinants of these alterations among patients with long-COVID. Data from 383 participants who have had COVID-19 were collected through a web-survey (May-November 2021). Descriptive analyses were performed to outline the sociodemographic ch

About four decades ago, empirically developed shock therapies were introduced as treatments for mental disorders. However, there still remains today a wide disagreement as to why these procedures are effective. It has long been known that the behavior in lower animals can be altered by the use of planned psychologcal methods. Likewise psychological procedures (employing such factors as suggestion and fear) had been used by preliterate man all through the ages in the treatment of mental illness. During the past century various types of pre-modern shock therapies using suggestion, fear or excita

Background. Cervical dystonia (CD) is a neurological movement disorder characterized by involuntary contractions of the cervical musculature and is known to be associated with proprioceptive dysfunction in dystonic/nondystonic limbs. Objectives. We examined how neck botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) injection affects wrist proprioception and the corresponding sensorimotor cortical activity in CD. Method. Wrist position sense acuity of the dominant (right) hand was evaluated in 15 CD and 15 control participants. Acuity measures were a psychophysical position sense discrimination threshold (DT; based

Visual object expertise correlates with neural selectivity in the fusiform face area (FFA). Although behavioral studies suggest that visual expertise is associated with increased use of holistic and configural information, little is known about the nature of the supporting neural representations. Using high-resolution 7-T functional magnetic resonance imaging, we recorded the multivoxel activation patterns elicited by whole cars, configurally disrupted cars, and car parts in individuals with a wide range of car expertise. A probabilistic support vector machine classifier was trained to differe

Transgender (trans) women have been particularly impacted by HIV. To seek insights into the dynamics of health service utilization, interviews were conducted with trans women living with HIV (n = 14) as part of the Trans PULSE community-based research project in Ontario, Canada. Service providers (n = 10) were also interviewed to provide additional details about communication between trans women, social service providers, and clinicians. Results highlight how both problematic interactions with individuals and health systems navigation challenges affect access to services and impede the develop

Restricted, repetitive behaviors are diagnostic for autism and prevalent in other neurodevelopmental disorders. These behaviors cluster as repetitive sensory-motor behaviors and behaviors reflecting resistance to change. The C58 mouse strain is a promising model for these behaviors as it emits high rates of aberrant repetitive sensory-motor behaviors. The purpose of the present study was to extend characterization of the C58 model to resistance to change. This was done by comparing C58 to C57BL/6 mice on a reversal learning task under either a 100% or 80%/20% probabilistic reinforcement schedu

Phasic dopamine (DA) release is believed to guide associative learning. Most studies have focused on projections from the ventral tegmental area (VTA) to the striatum, and the action of DA in other VTA target regions remains unclear. Using optogenetic activation of VTA projections, we examined DA function in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). We found that mice perceived optogenetically induced DA release in mPFC as neither rewarding nor aversive, and did not change their previously learned behavior in response to DA transients. However, repetitive temporal pairing of an auditory conditioned

Decisions are often made by accumulating evidence for and against the alternatives. The momentary evidence represented by sensory neurons is accumulated by downstream structures to form a decision variable, linking the evolving decision to the formation of a motor plan. When decisions are communicated by eye movements, neurons in the lateral intraparietal area (LIP) represent the accumulation of evidence bearing on the potential targets for saccades. We now show that reach-related neurons from the medial intraparietal area (MIP) exhibit a gradual modulation of their firing rates consistent wit

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by reduced attention to salient social stimuli. Here, we use two visual oddball tasks to investigate brain systems engaged during attention to social (face) and non-social (scene) stimuli. We focused on the dorsal and ventral subdivisions of the anterior insula (dAI and vAI, respectively), anatomically distinct regions contributing to a 'salience network' that is known to regulate attention to behaviorally meaningful stimuli. Children with ASD performed comparably to their typically developing (TD) peers, but they engaged the right dAI and vAI di

Chronic drug administration induces neuroplastic changes within brain circuits regulating cognitive control and/or emotions. Following repeated pairings between drug intake and environmental cues, increased sensitivity to or salience of these contextual cues provoke conscious or unconscious craving and enhance susceptibility to relapse. To explore brain circuits participating in such experience-induced plasticity, we combined functional MRI with a preclinical drug vs. food self-administration (SA) withdrawal model. Specifically, two groups of rats were trained to associate odor cues with the a

The aim of this study was to investigate whether deficits in auditory processing are associated with auditory hallucinations in patients with schizophrenia. It was hypothesised that individuals with a diagnosis of schizophrenia would demonstrate deficits in processing the spectral and temporal aspects of sound and that such deficits would be more pronounced in patients with a history of auditory hallucinations (hallucinators) than those without such a history (non-hallucinators). A community sample meeting clinical criteria for schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder (19 hallucinators, 15 no

This article delineates the phenomenon of "cognitive-affective division" in eating disorders, used to refer to the difficulty some patients face in translating what they "think" cognitively to what they "feel" emotionally. A clinical description of cognitive-affective division is first presented, drawing on existing research, before moving on to discuss psychological theories that might shed some light on this often-seen but seldom understood phenomenon. These include the role of emotion awareness and alexithymia, cognitive and emotional development, and neuropsychological theories. We discuss

A previous study found a visual deficit in contour integration in English readers with dyslexia (Simmers & Bex, 2001). Visual contour integration may play an even more significant role in Chinese handwriting particularly due to its logographic presentation (Lam, Au, Leung, & Li-Tsang, 2011). The current study examined the relationship between children's performance in visual contour (VC) integration and Chinese handwriting. Twenty students from grade 3 to grade 6 were recruited (M=9.51, SD=1.02) from a mainstream primary school using the convenience sampling method. Ten students were identifie

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Somatosensory temporal discrimination threshold (STDT) is defined as the threshold at which two tactile stimuli applied to the skin are perceived as clearly distinct. The aim of the study was to investigate whether the extent of STDT alterations differs between patients with parkinsonian type multiple system atrophy (MSA-P) and patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Possible differences between the two groups may help to differentiate MSA-P from PD.
METHODS: STDT was investigated in 20 patients with MSA-P, 21 patients with PD and 18 age-matched healthy subjects. The c

Pusher behaviour (PB) reflects some misrepresentation of verticality. However, its neural mechanisms are still unclear. The aim of this pilot study is to assess the perception of the subjective visual vertical in patients with PB using an orientation discrimination task relying on a psychophysical forced-choice procedure. A sample of eight patients with post-stroke hemiplegia, three of whom with (PB+ group) and five without (PB- group) a clear PB, and 10 matched healthy subjects, was selected. All participants were assessed with an orientation discrimination task based on the objective Two-Alt

BACKGROUND: Children whose mothers consumed alcohol during pregnancy exhibit widespread brain abnormalities and a complex array of behavioral disturbances. Here, we used a mouse model of fetal alcohol exposure to investigate relationships between brain abnormalities and specific behavioral alterations during adulthood.
RESULTS: Mice drank a 10% ethanol solution throughout pregnancy. When fetal alcohol-exposed offspring reached adulthood, we used high resolution MRI to conduct a brain-wide screen for structural changes and found that the largest reduction in volume occurred in the olfactory bu

RATIONALE: Several neurotransmitter systems have been hypothesized to be involved in the in vivo effects of volatile anesthetics. Drug discrimination may represent a novel procedure to explore the neurochemical systems underlying the sub-anesthetic behavioral effects of these compounds.
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the present study was to examine the contribution of GABA(A) and NMDA receptors to the discriminative stimulus effects of a behaviorally active sub-anesthetic concentration of isoflurane vapor.
METHODS: Sixteen B6SJLF1/J mice were trained to discriminate 10 min of exposure to 6,000
