PURPOSE: To determine the optical coherence tomographic (OCT) characteristics of normal corneas and to characterize the OCT images of abnormal corneal lesions.
METHODS: Eleven eyes from 10 patients were examined at the Cornea Service of the Nagoya University Hospital: 4 had corneal pathologies, 4 underwent keratoplasty, and 2 were normal controls; 1 enucleated eye was also examined. INTRODUCTION: Anophthalmia may be congenital or acquired. Congenital anophthalmia refers to any orbit that contains a severely hypoplastic eye at birth (microphthalmia), or a complete absence of the globe due to failure of optic vesicle formation. In both those cases the aim of surgery is to stimulate adequate orbital growth. Acquired anophthalmic orbit may be due to trauma or tumour. In acquired forms the goal is restoration of orbital volume with adequate replacement of orbital contents.

In humans, midget and parasol ganglion cells account for most of the input from the eyes to the brain. Yet, how they encode visual information is unknown. Here, we perform large-scale multi-electrode array recordings from retinas of treatment-naive patients who underwent enucleation surgery for choroidal malignant melanomas. We identify robust differences in the function of midget and parasol ganglion cells, consistent asymmetries between their ON and OFF types (that signal light increments and decrements, respectively) and divergence in the function of human versus non-human primate retinas.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the correspondence between topographic mapping of the vitreoretinal and chorioretinal surfaces in vivo and histopathology findings.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Choroidal neovascularization was induced in the retina of a primate by an argon laser. Serial optical section images of the retina were obtained using an optical imaging system based on the Retinal Thickness Analyzer. In a series of 98 consecutive eyeballs enucleated at postmortem from 86 patients dying with AIDS, the incidence of calcium deposits was 14 and 18.6%, respectively, for oxalates and calcium hydroxyapatite. The calcific eyes were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis to confirm the elemental nature of the precipitates. PURPOSE: Sarcoidosis is a chronic idiopathic granulomatous inflammatory disease that can affect many major organ systems, primarily the lungs, and hence has remarkable clinical heterogeneity. At least 50% of patients with systemic sarcoidosis develop inflammatory eye disease, and in approximately 21% of cases, it may be the first clinical manifestation. Neuro-ocular involvement occurs in <3% of all sarcoidosis cases, and rarely involves the optic nerve.
