The prevalence of malnutrition in patients with Systemic Sclerosis (SSc) is significant and adversely affects disease progression. This study aimed to investigate the nutritional status of patients with SSc and the relationship between micronutrients and nutritional status. This cross-sectional observational study included 50 patients with SSc. We measured levels of vitamins (A, B1, B6, B12, D, folic acid), trace elements (copper, zinc, selenium, chromium), and proteins (prealbumin, ceruloplasmin). ICP-MS was used for trace element analysis. The relationships between outcomes, patients' demogr

Growth differentiation factor-15 (GDF15) is a member of the GDF subfamily with potential kidney protective functions. Here, we explored the impact of GDF15 on the expression of the kidney protective factor Klotho in models of acute kidney injury and kidney fibrosis in mice. GDF15 was the most upregulated GDF family gene in experimental toxic acute kidney injury and in kidney fibrosis transcriptomics. GDF15 function was explored in toxic acute kidney injury in genetically modified mice and following treatment with GDF15. Gdf15-deficient mice developed more severe toxic acute kidney injury (foli

WHO recommendations on iron supplementation for infants and young children in malaria-endemic areas changed dramatically from universal to targeted supplementation for iron-deficient children only, after a trial in a high malaria transmission area showed an increased risk of hospital admission and mortality among iron-replete children following iron and folic acid supplementation. Since this time, there has been much debate and little agreement among the nutrition research community on how to move forward, and country policy and program decision makers have been left with incomplete guidance o

Methyl deficiencies have been implicated in metabolic programming during the periods of oocyte and embryo development. Semisynthetic methyl-deficient diets (MD) with no folic acid, 0.05% choline, and approximately one-half the recommended content of methionine were fed to female rats for 3 wk prior to mating and for the first 5 d of gestation. During the period of MD feeding, plasma homocysteine concentrations were approximately twice those of rats fed the complete (CON) diet. From d 5, both groups received a complete semipurified AIN diet until birth. On d 8, plasma homocysteine concentration

The maintenance of the cellular epigenomic landscape, which depends on the status of the one-carbon metabolic pathway, is essential for normal central nervous system development and function. In the present study, we examined the epigenetic alterations in the brains of Fisher 344 rats induced by the long-term administration of a diet lacking of essential one-carbon nutrients, methionine, choline, and folic acid. The results demonstrated that feeding a folate/methyl-deficient diet causes global DNA hypermethylation as indicated by an increase of genomic 5-methyl-2'-deoxycytidine (5mdC) content

I have described how many years of research were needed to overcome three nutritional diseases that occurred throughout the world. When human beings migrated from tropical and subtropical regions to the temperate zone, they lost their year-round supplies of vitamin C, and scurvy began to occur. The emergence of beri-beri had a mechanical basis; the introduction of milling, which prevented the rancidity of rice and wheat, also removed the essential vitamin B1. The circumstance leading to the third deficiency disease was reliance on maize, without supplementing it with "protective" foods, such a

PURPOSE: Impaired B vitamin status has been identified as a risk factor for major chronic diseases. This study aims at examining the determinants of plasma folate and vitamin B12 concentrations, considering lifestyle factors and MTHFR polymorphisms.
METHODS: A total of 988 women aged 40-65 years from the French E3N cohort were investigated. Intakes of folate and vitamin B12 were assessed using food frequency questionnaires, and plasma concentrations were measured by microbiological assay. Dietary scores were computed to summarize folate and vitamin B12 dietary sources. MTHFR-C677T and MTHFR-A

A rise in the aging population has been predicted, and, as a result, it is expected that the incidence of age-related health conditions will also increase. Although common in the elderly, anemia is often mild and asymptomatic and rarely requires hospitalization. However, untreated anemia can be detrimental, because it is associated with increased mortality, poor health, fatigue, and functional dependence and can lead to cardiovascular and neurological complications. Several factors have been suggested to cause anemia in this population, for example, blood loss or chronic disease. In some cases

Iron deficiency (ID), defined as an insufficient supply of iron to the cells of the body after iron reserves have been exhausted, is the most prevalent single nutritional deficiency, affecting over 2,000 million people, mostly in the developing world. Infants, small children, adolescents and pregnant and fertile-age women are most vulnerable. Only about 50% of people with ID develop iron deficiency anemia (IDA), since this is a late manifestation of chronic ID. Based on the average daily iron requirement and on the rate of iron reutilization from red cell hemoglobin destruction, it can be esti

Dietary deficiencies of specific nutrients profoundly alter cell-mediated immune responses in man and experimental animals. Both moderate and severe deficiencies are associated with significant changes in immunocompetence. Diets with inadequate levels of protein, calories, vitamin A, pyridoxine, biotin and zinc result in loss of thymic cellularity. Secondary to thymic atrophy, the production of thymic hormones critical for the differentiation of T lymphocytes is reduced, especially in protein-calorie malnutrition and zinc deficiency. Confirmation of a T cell maturational defect in nutritional

Older adults have potential increased risk of nutrient deficiencies because of age-related decreased dietary intake and malabsorption; it is important to ensure nutrient needs are met to avoid adverse health outcomes. B vitamins are of particular interest: vitamin B12 deficiency can cause irreversible neurodegeneration; there is mandatory folic acid fortification in Canada; and suboptimal riboflavin status has been reported among older adults in the United Kingdom. In this exploratory secondary analysis study we assessed vitamin B12 and riboflavin biochemical status (via microparticle enzyme i

BACKGROUND: Anemia after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) has been reported in 5 to 64 % of patients. Since absorption of specific elements is reduced, proper supplementation is mandatory. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of anemia, its causes, and the related deficiencies during the 1st postoperative year after RYGB.
METHODS: A retrospective review of our prospectively collected database was performed. A total of 486 patients who underwent RYGB in a 5-year period and completed at least 1-year follow-up were included. Daily supplements as suggested by the AACE/TOS/ASMBS g

Previous reports on pernicious anemia treatment suggested that high folic acid intake adversely influences the natural history of vitamin B-12 deficiency, which affects many elderly individuals. However, experimental investigation of this hypothesis is unethical, and the few existing observational data are inconclusive. With the use of data from the 1999-2002 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), we evaluated the interaction between high serum folate and low vitamin B-12 status [ie, plasma vitamin B-12 < 148 pmol/L or methylmalonic acid (MMA) > 210 nmol/L] with respect to

The prevalence of anaemia in India remains high in children, especially those in rural areas, and in women of childbearing age, and its impairment of neurological development can have serious lifelong effects. It is concerning that the most recent official data (2019-21) indicate an increased prevalence compared with 2015-16. There is also considerable variability in childhood anaemia between Indian states with socioeconomic factors, such as wealth and education contributing to the risk of anaemia among adolescent women and their children. Dietary iron deficiency is often regarded as the main
