The use of a measure of acute irritation to predict the outcome of repeated usage of hand soap products.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare-associated infection is an important worldwide problem that could be reduced by better hand hygiene practice. However, an increasing number of healthcare workers are experiencing irritant contact dermatitis of the hands as a result of repeated hand washing. This may lead to a reduced level of compliance with regard to hand hygiene. OBJECTIVES: To assess whether a measure of acute irritation by hand soaps could predict the effects of repeated usage over a 2-week period. METHODS: In a double-blind, randomized comparison study, the comparative irritation potential of four

Clinical inertia in onychomycosis treatment: results from the Illuminating Dialogues and Insights in Onychomycosis Management (IDIOM) survey.

Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the nail that can serve as a reservoir for tinea infections in other parts of the body and can be transmitted to other individuals. As the disease progresses, it can lead to functional impairment, such as difficulties in walking, and negatively impact the psychosocial aspects of quality of life. Onychomycosis treatment, especially topical, is long-term, and adequate follow-up is essential for cure. However, the realities and issues of patient-physician communication after treatment initiation, including patients' perception of efficacy, treatment satisfac

Contact sensitivity to chromate: comparison at a London contact dermatitis clinic over a 10-year period.

It has been argued that for chromate sensitivity to be reduced, then ferrous sulfate should be added to cement. This has not yet been done in the UK. To explore this further, we have looked at the comparative sensitization rates of patients attending the St. John's Institute of Dermatology Contact Dermatitis Clinic between the years 1982-3 and 1992-3. Patch-test-positive rates for females were not significantly different between the 2 populations studied (1982-3, 1.59% and 1992-3, 1.99% p NS). Similarly, there was no significantly different rate between the males (1982-3, 3.99% and 1992-3, 4.2

GJB6 missense variant in a Labrador Retriever with paw pad hyperkeratosis.

Palmoplantar keratoderma in humans is a condition defined by an abnormally thickened cornified skin layer on the hands and feet. In animals, the corresponding disease is commonly termed paw pad hyperkeratosis. It can be acquired due to repeated trauma, infections, cancer, or inflammatory dermatoses, or inherited due to pathogenic variants in genes involved in skin development. More than 60 different genes involved in the development of palmoplantar keratoderma have been described. Here, we investigated a female Labrador Retriever showing hyperkeratosis on all four paw pads and most digital pad

Dermatology facing autoinflammatory syndrome.

Cutaneous symptoms are characteristic for the autoinflammatory disorders (AIDs), both in the classical autoinflammatory phenotype and in most disorders included in this syndrome, but they are not specific and inconstant. Several skin disorders (pyoderma gangrenosum and pustular acne) may be encountered either isolate or associated with autoinflammatory symptoms, forming well-defined clinical entities within the autoinflammatory syndrome. The high prevalence of cutaneous manifestations is an important characteristic of AIDs. The presence of cutaneous symptoms in AIDs opens the perspective of un

Allergic contact dermatitis among construction workers detected in a clinic that did not specialize in occupational dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Contact dermatitis is one of the common work-related dermatoses. Among bricklayers, cement can cause both allergic contact dermatitis and primary contact irritative dermatitis. The personal protective equipment (rubber gloves) may favor the development of allergic contact dermatitis. OBJECTIVES: 1) to evaluate the frequency of allergic contact dermatitis among construction workers between January 2005 and December 2009; 2) to determine the major sensitizing agents in the study group; and 3) to compare the data obtained from the construction workers to that of a group of patients w

A randomized, controlled, double-blind study of the effect of wearing coated pH 5.5 latex gloves compared with standard powder-free latex gloves on skin pH, transepidermal water loss and skin irritation.

Hand dermatitis is a common occupational disease. Altered skin pH plays an important role in the development of skin irritation. A glove that maintains tight control over skin pH may reduce hand dermatitis in glove users. The purpose of the study was to characterize the effect of glove wearing on skin pH, investigate the impact of study glove on skin pH compared with standard gloves and determine whether wearing study gloves reduced irritation. 20 healthy volunteers enrolled in a 4-week double-blind comparison of study and control gloves and served as their own controls. Gloves were worn 8 hr
