A totally data-driven whole-brain multimodal pipeline for the discrimination of Parkinson's disease, multiple system atrophy and healthy control.

Parkinson's Disease (PD) and Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) are two parkinsonian syndromes that share many symptoms, albeit having very different prognosis. Although previous studies have proposed multimodal MRI protocols combined with multivariate analysis to discriminate between these two populations and healthy controls, studies combining all MRI indexes relevant for these disorders (i.e. grey matter volume, fractional anisotropy, mean diffusivity, iron deposition, brain activity at rest and brain connectivity) with a completely data-driven voxelwise analysis for discrimination are still lac

T1- and ECV-mapping in clinical routine at 3 T: differences between MOLLI, ShMOLLI and SASHA.

BACKGROUND: T1 mapping sequences such as MOLLI, ShMOLLI and SASHA make use of different technical approaches, bearing strengths and weaknesses. It is well known that obtained T1 relaxation times differ between the sequence techniques as well as between different hardware. Yet, T1 quantification is a promising tool for myocardial tissue characterization, disregarding the absence of established reference values. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of native and post-contrast T1 mapping methods as well as ECV maps and its diagnostic benefits in a clinical environment when sc

Differentiated Regional Homogeneity in Progressive Mild Cognitive Impairment: A Study With Post Hoc Label.

PURPOSE: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is considered to be the clinical transition stage between patients with cognitively intact geriatrics and Alzheimer's disease (AD). When observed longitudinally, however, a certain proportion of patients with MCI are expected to revert to a cognitively intact state (MCI_R) while others either remain in the MCI state (MCI_S) or deteriorate into AD (MCI_P). It is worthwhile to investigate the divergence in the brain activities of these MCI groups with different post hoc labels. METHODS: In this study, we employed the regional homogeneity (ReHo) measure t

Application of magnetic resonance imaging in diagnosis of Uterus Cervical Carcinoma.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Effective treatment of Uterus Cervical Carcinoma (UCC) rely heavily on the precise pre-surgical staging. The conventional International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) system based on clinical examination is being applied worldwide for UCC staging. Yet its performance just appears passable. Thus, this study aims to investigate the value of applying Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) with clinical examination in staging of UCC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective dataset involving 164 patients diagnosed with UCC was enrolled in this study. The mean age

Deep learning reveals Alzheimer's disease onset in MCI subjects: Results from an international challenge.

BACKGROUND: Early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and its onset in subjects affected by mild cognitive impairment (MCI) based on structural MRI features is one of the most important open issues in neuroimaging. Accordingly, a scientific challenge has been promoted, on the international Kaggle platform, to assess the performance of different classification methods for prediction of MCI and its conversion to AD. NEW METHOD: This work presents a classification strategy based on Random Forest feature selection and Deep Neural Network classification using a mixed cohort including the four cl

The cerebellum's contribution to beat interval discrimination.

From expert percussionists to individuals who cannot dance, there are widespread differences in people's abilities to perceive and synchronize with a musical beat. The aim of our study was to identify candidate brain regions that might be associated with these abilities. For this purpose, we used Voxel-Based-Morphometry to correlate inter-individual differences in performance on the Harvard Beat Assessment Tests (H-BAT) with local inter-individual variations in gray matter volumes across the entire brain space in 60 individuals. Analysis revealed significant co-variations between performances

Assessing neural tuning for object perception in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder with multivariate pattern analysis of fMRI data.

INTRODUCTION: Deficits in visual perception are well-established in schizophrenia and are linked to abnormal activity in the lateral occipital complex (LOC). Related deficits may exist in bipolar disorder. LOC contains neurons tuned to object features. It is unknown whether neural tuning in LOC or other visual areas is abnormal in patients, contributing to abnormal perception during visual tasks. This study used multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA) to investigate perceptual tuning for objects in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. METHODS: Fifty schizophrenia participants, 51 bipolar disorder

The involvement of supratentorial white matter in multiple system atrophy: a diffusion tensor imaging tractography study.

It has been assumed that cognitive disorder and visual-spatial disturbance in multiple system atrophy of the predominantly cerebellar type (MSA-C) are attributable to degradation of cerebellar function. The purpose of this study was to use diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) tractography to determine if patients with MSA-C characterized in part by visual-spatial disorders and cognitive disorders have changes of the structural connectivity network of nerve fibers, and to further describe the structural connectivity network. The study included 20 patients with MSA-C and 30 age- and sex-matched health

X-ray physics- and bone composition-based estimation of thickness characteristics from clinical mandibular radiographs.

In dentistry, clinical radiographs (also called X-ray images) reflect the intensity loss of an X-ray when being transmitted through the mandibular objects, and this loss is quantified in terms of grey values. While such images are standardly used for pathology detection by the experienced dentist, we here present a new method for getting more quantitative information out of such 2D radiographs, "extending" them into the third dimension. This "extension" requires consistent combination of X-ray physics (namely, X-ray intensity loss quantification along paths orthogonal to the panoramic clinical

Presurgical language lateralization assessment by fMRI and dichotic listening of pediatric patients with intractable epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical use of a method to assess hemispheric language dominance in pediatric candidates for epilepsy surgery. The method is designed for patients but has previously been evaluated with healthy children. METHODS: Nineteen patients, 8-18 years old, with intractable epilepsy and candidates for epilepsy surgery were assessed. The assessment consisted of two functional MRI protocols (fMRI) intended to target frontal and posterior language networks respectively, and a behavioral dichotic listening task (DL). Regional left/right indices for each

White matter perivascular spaces are related to cortical superficial siderosis in cerebral amyloid angiopathy.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: We set out to investigate whether MRI-visible centrum semiovale perivascular spaces (CSO-PVS), a potential biomarker of impaired interstitial fluid drainage in sporadic cerebral amyloid angiopathy, is associated with cortical superficial siderosis (cSS), reflecting recurrent hemorrhage from severe leptomeningeal and superficial cortical vascular amyloid. METHODS: Retrospective multicenter cohort study of possible/probable cerebral amyloid angiopathy according to the Boston criteria. PVS were rated in basal ganglia and CSO (CSO-PVS) on axial T2-weighted sequences, using

Advanced MRI morphologic study shows no atrophy in healthy individuals with hippocampal hyperintensity.

We have already shown that brain MR imaging of healthy individuals frequently reveals either unilateral or bilateral Hh, which is considered a hallmark of hippocampal sclerosis. We performed a follow-up (5-year interval) clinical and advanced imaging study of these individuals to address whether Hh may have masked occult brain atrophy or contributed to a later onset of epilepsy. Subjects with Hh (n = 13) underwent a detailed clinical-imaging protocol, with a 3T scan and were studied with automated hippocampal segmentation (FreeSurfer), whole brain voxel-based morphometry, and shape analysis. Preliminary experience with cardiovascular magnetic resonance in evaluation of fetal cardiovascular anomalies.

BACKGROUND: The cardiovascular system is the part of the fetal anatomy that most frequently suffers from congenital pathology. This study shows our preliminary experience with fetal cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) to evaluate congenital cardiovascular abnormalities. METHODS: Between January 2006 and June 2011, Prenatal routine obstetric ultrasound (US), echocardiography and CMR data from 68 pregnant women carrying fetuses with congenital cardiovascular anomalies were compared with postnatal diagnoses (postnatal imagings, surgery and autopsy). All prenatal CMR was performed at 1.5 T. I

Use of digital patient photographs and electronic medical record data as diagnostic tools in Japan.

An electronic medical record (EMR) system was introduced to the University of Miyazaki Hospital, in Japan, in 2006. This hospital is the only one in Japan to store digital photographs of patients within EMRs. In this paper, we report on the utility of these digital photographs for disease diagnosis. Digital photographs of patients were taken at the time of hospitalization, and have been used for patient identification by medical staff. More than 20,000 digital photographs have been saved, along with examination data and medical history classified by disease, since the introduction of EMR. In t

Coupled bias-variance tradeoff for cross-pose face recognition.

Subspace-based face representation can be looked as a regression problem. From this viewpoint, we first revisited the problem of recognizing faces across pose differences, which is a bottleneck in face recognition. Then, we propose a new approach for cross-pose face recognition using a regressor with a coupled bias-variance tradeoff. We found that striking a coupled balance between bias and variance in regression for different poses could improve the regressor-based cross-pose face representation, i.e., the regressor can be more stable against a pose difference. With the basic idea, ridge regr

Relationship between aberrant brain connectivity and clinical features in Angelman Syndrome: a new method using tract based spatial statistics of DTI color-coded orientation maps.

AIM: In order to relate brain structural abnormalities to clinical features of Angelman Syndrome (AS), we determined the locations of abnormal regional white matter architecture in AS children using a sensitive and objective whole brain approach to analyze diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) color-coded orientation maps. METHODS: Using tract based spatial statistics (TBSS) of DTI color-coded orientation maps, the fraction of fibers oriented in the anteroposterior (AP), mediolateral (ML) and superioinferior (SI) directions were determined in whole brain white matter of 7 children with AS (mean age:

Evaluation of cerebellar and cerebral volume in migraine with aura: a stereological study.

Migraine is associated with an increased risk of deep white matter lesions and subclinical posterior circulation infarcts. A significant association between deep white matter hyperintensities and cerebral atrophy is true for various neurological diseases; it was not specifically proven in migraine. The aim of this study was to evaluate the cerebellar and cerebral volume and volume ratios for cerebellum using the Cavalieri principle. We also aimed to examine whether migraine with aura causes cerebellar and cerebral atrophy. Twenty three right-handed patients with migraine with aura diagnosed by

Dependent multiple cue integration for robust tracking.

We propose a new technique for fusing multiple cues to robustly segment an object from its background in video sequences that suffer from abrupt changes of both illumination and position of the target. Robustness is achieved by the integration of appearance and geometric object features and by their estimation using Bayesian filters, such as Kalman or particle filters. In particular, each filter estimates the state of a specific object feature, conditionally dependent on another feature estimated by a distinct filter. This dependence provides improved target representations, permitting to segm
