Repellent, Lethal Activity, and Synergism of Cannabis sativa Extracts with Terpenes Against a Laboratory Colony of Triatoma infestans.

Triatoma infestans is one of the primary vectors of Chagas disease. This vector has developed increasing resistance to pyrethroids, the main insecticides used for its control. Recent studies have highlighted the repellent and lethal effects of Cannabis sativa on insects, suggesting its potential use in pest management. Based on this, we hypothesize that C. sativa could be a viable bioactive for controlling T. infestans. To test this hypothesis, acetone and ethanol extracts were obtained from the inflorescences of C. sativa L. (Deep Mandarine variety) using sonication. These extracts were analy

Bioefficacy of Chromobacterium piscinae against the corn leafhopper Dalbulus maidis and genomic insights into virulence factors.

Chromobacterium subtsugae is the only species in this genus exploited for biological pest control. In this study, we demonstrated the insecticidal properties of Chromobacterium piscinae ESALQ6200 against Dalbulus maidis, even at low concentrations, using treatments with only bacterial cells and cell-free filtered supernatant containing secreted metabolites. Notably, we did not observe increased mortality with higher concentrations of C. piscinae ESALQ6200 cells (3.5 × 104 to 6.7 × 109 cells/mL) or cell-free filtered supernatant (1%, 25%, 100%). Mortality rates observed in the cell treatments w

Genome-wide identification, characterization, and expression analyses of the solute carrier 2 (SLC2) gene family in fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda).

The solute carrier 2 (SLC2) gene family, responsible for hexose and polyol transport, has not been fully characterized in Spodoptera frugiperda, a globally invasive pest. Among this family, the trehalose transporter (TRET) genes, the largest and most functionally important subfamily, contribute to energy homeostasis and stress adaptation in insects. Despite their importance, TRET genes’ role in insect responses to bioinsecticide exposure remains largely unknown. Therefore, this study aimed to identify and characterize SLC2 genes, from which TRET genes were validated under bioinsecticidal stres

A comprehensive investigation of the effect of thyme oil-loaded chitosan nanoparticles on aphid-mediated transmission of potato virus Y.

BACKGROUND: Sustainable nanotechnology, particularly chitosan (CS)-based biodegradable nanoparticles (NPs), offers an eco-friendly delivery system compared to conventional techniques. Potato virus Y (PVY) causes severe potato yield losses and reduces tuber quality. Its control is challenging owing to nonpersistent aphid transmission, especially by Myzus persicae, the most efficient vector. Chemical insecticides lead to environmental pollution, health risks, and resistance, highlighting the need for alternatives. This study assessed pure CS, thyme essential oil (TEO)-loaded CS, CS-lecithin (LH)

Reasons for low long-lasting insecticide-treated net use and repurposing: qualitative study from southern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) are the main vector control tools and remain protective against malaria, even in the presence of high pyrethroid resistance. However, in sub-Saharan Africa, the estimated percentage of the population sleeping under LLINs is low. Hence, this qualitative study was conducted to explore perceptions about LLINs and the reasons for low LLIN use in southern Ethiopia. METHODS: Qualitative cross-sectional study was conducted in southern Ethiopia. Study areas were selected based on low LLIN use following a quantitative survey. Seven focus group discuss

Larvicidal & emergence inhibitory activities of NeemAzal T/S 1.2 per cent EC against vectors of malaria, filariasis & dengue.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Vector control, using agents of chemical origin, continues to be practiced in the control of vector borne diseases. However, due to some drawbacks including lack of selectivity, environmental contamination, and emergence and spread of vector resistance, development of natural products for vector control has been a priority in this area. In the present study we evaluated the larvicidal and emergence inhibitory activities of a neem based formulation Neem Azal T/S 1.2 per cent EC against the vectors of malaria, filariasis and dengue. The genetics of green thorax, a new larval colour mutant, non-linked with ruby - eye locus in the malaria mosquito, Anopheles stephensi.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Anopheles stephensi, an important vector of malaria continues to be distributed widely in the Indian subcontinent. The natural vigour of the species combined with its new tolerance, indeed resistance to insecticides has made it obligatory that we look for control methods involving genetic manipulation. Hence, there is an immediate need for greater understanding of the genetics of this vector species. One of the requirements for such genetic studies is the establishment of naturally occurring mutants, establishment of the genetic basis for the same and use of such mutan

Effect of pharmacokinetically-relevant ivermectin concentrations on survivorship and fecundity of Anopheles coluzzii and Aedes aegypti in Burkina Faso: A laboratory experimental study.

BACKGROUND: The control of vector-borne diseases is increasingly challenged by insecticide resistance widespread. Therefore, innovative vector control tools with alternative modes of action are urgently needed to support existing ones. Ivermectin (IVM), a broad-spectrum endectocide has been shown to exert lethal effects on mosquitoes, including Anopheles and Aedes species following blood meals taken from treated humans or livestock. In this study, we assessed the effect of IVM at concentrations equivalent to human plasma levels following mass drug administration (MDA), on the survival and fecu…

Lethal and sublethal impacts of membrane-fed ivermectin are concentration dependent in Anopheles coluzzii.

BACKGROUND: Ivermectin is a well-tolerated anthelminthic drug with wide clinical and veterinary applications. It also has lethal and sublethal effects on mosquitoes. Mass drug administration with ivermectin has therefore been suggested as an innovative vector control tool in efforts to curb emerging insecticide resistance and reduce residual malaria transition. To support assessments of the feasibility and efficacy of current and future formulations of ivermectin for vector control, we sought to establish the relationship between ivermectin concentration and its lethal and sublethal impacts in…

The epidemiological benefit of pyrethroid-pyrrole insecticide treated nets against malaria: an individual-based malaria transmission dynamics modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Insecticide treated nets (ITNs) are the most important malaria prevention tool in Africa but the rise of pyrethroid resistance in mosquitoes is likely impeding control. WHO has recommended a novel pyrethroid-pyrrole ITN following evidence of epidemiological benefit in two cluster-randomised, controlled trials (CRTs). It remains unclear how effective more costly pyrethroid-pyrrole ITNs are compared with other tools, or whether they should be deployed when budgets are limited. We aimed to compare the epidemiological impact and cost-effectiveness of the mass distribution of pyrethroid

The rise and fall of malaria in a West African rural community, Dielmo, Senegal, from 1990 to 2012: a 22 year longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: A better understanding of the effect of malaria control interventions on vector and parasite populations, acquired immunity, and burden of the disease is needed to guide strategies to eliminate malaria from highly endemic areas. We monitored and analysed the changes in malaria epidemiology in a village community in Senegal, west Africa, over 22 years. METHODS: Between 1990 and 2012, we did a prospective longitudinal study of the inhabitants of Dielmo, Senegal, to identify all episodes of fever and investigate the relation between malaria host, vector, and parasite. Our study inclu

Acceptability of intermittent preventive treatment of malaria in pregnancy with sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine plus dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine in Papua New Guinea: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: In moderate-to-high malaria transmission regions, the World Health Organization recommends intermittent preventive treatment in pregnancy (IPTp) with sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) alongside insecticide-treated bed nets to reduce the adverse consequences of pregnancy-associated malaria. Due to high-grade Plasmodium falciparum resistance to SP, novel treatment regimens need to be evaluated for IPTp, but these increase pill burden and treatment days. The present qualitative study assessed the acceptability of IPTp-SP plus dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine (DP) in Papua New Guinea, where
