Adapting language models for mental health analysis on social media.

In recent years, there has been a growing research interest focused on identifying traces of mental disorders through social media analysis. These disorders significantly impair millions of individuals' cognitive and behavioral functions worldwide. Our study aims to advance the understanding of four prevalent mental disorders: Anorexia, Depression, Gambling, and Self-harm. We present a comprehensive framework designed for the domain adaptation of models to analyze and identify signs of these conditions on social media posts. The language models' adapting strategy consisted of three key stages.

Targeted Muscle Reinnervation and Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interface for Myoelectric Prosthesis Control: The State of Evidence.

Prosthetic rehabilitation after amputation poses significant challenges, often due to functional limitations, residual limb pain (RLP), and phantom limb pain (PLP). These issues not only affect physical health but also mental well-being and quality of life. In this review, we describe targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR) and regenerative peripheral nerve interface (RPNI) and explore their clinical role in the evolution of myoelectric prosthetic control as well as postamputation pain and neuroma management. Early myoelectric prostheses, which detected electrical potentials from muscles to contro

Optical-Tattoo Sensing for Non-Contact Control of Bionic Limbs: A Conceptual Framework.

Conventional pattern recognition (PR) methods in bionic hand systems are reliant on contact-based sensors and remain vulnerable to the inherent instability of biological signals. This study presents an alternative method that uses a novel non-contact PR approach to classify the motion of individual fingers and hand grasping gestures. This method does not depend on biosignals; instead, it utilises optical sensing. To enhance optical differentiation during muscle contraction, interference-pigment tattoos were applied to the targeted areas of the skin of the muscular areas. In this approach, musc

Plantar sensation associates with gait instability in older adults.

BACKGROUND: Advanced age brings a loss of plantar sensation, represented, for example, as higher sensation thresholds in standardized testing. This is thought to contribute to an increased risk of falls among older adults - an intuitive premise that has yet to be fully investigated, especially in the context of walking balance. The purpose of this study was to quantify the association between plantar sensation and the instability elicited by a suite of walking balance perturbations that differ in direction and context in a cohort of n = 28 older adults (73.0 ± 5.9 yrs). METHODS: We measured p

Explanatory factors for the survival benefit among hip and knee arthroplasty patients with osteoarthritis.

OBJECTIVE: Studies have shown that osteoarthritis patients who underwent a primary total hip or knee arthroplasty (THA/TKA) experience better survival than the general population, yet there is limited evidence explaining this counter-intuitive difference. We investigated whether this better survival is also present in the Netherlands and to what extent it could be explained by a patient selection effect, whereby patients with more favorable health and socioeconomic status (SES) are more likely to receive THA/TKA. DESIGN: In this registry-based study, we compared the survival, health and SES o

Seg & Ref: a newly developed toolset for artificial intelligence-powered segmentation and interactive refinement for labor-saving three-dimensional reconstruction.

Traditional three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction is labor-intensive owing to manual segmentation; this can be addressed by developing artificial intelligence (AI)-driven automated segmentation. However, it is limited by a lack of user-friendly tools for morphologists. We present a workflow for 3D reconstruction using our AI-powered segmentation tool. Specifically, we developed an interactive toolset, 'Seg & Ref', to overcome the abovementioned challenges by enabling AI-powered segmentation and easy mask editing without requiring a command-line setup. We demonstrated a 3D reconstruction workfl

Remote Photoplethysmography (rPPG) promises to turn digital cameras into medical devices with the measurement of heart rates, oxygen saturation and the diagnosis arrhythmias already demonstrated. The face-centric nature of current rPPG techniques limits open-datasets from including subjects with clinically-relevant cardiorespiratory conditions without sharing private medical information. The neck, with few identifiable characteristics, is well suited to overcoming this limitation, as it serves as a region of interest (ROI) for pulse detection during jugular venous examination, a common clinica

Tongue feature dataset construction and real-time detection.

BACKGROUND: Tongue diagnosis in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) provides clinically important, objective evidence from direct observation of specific features that assist with diagnosis. However, the current interpretation of tongue features requires a significant amount of manpower and time. TCM physicians may have different interpretations of features displayed by the same tongue. An automated interpretation system that interprets tongue features would expedite the interpretation process and yield more consistent results. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study applied deep learning visualizat

Mapping cognitive biases in multidisciplinary team (MDT) decision-making for cancer care in Scotland: a cognitive ethnography study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: The efficiency of multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) in cancer care hinges on facilitating clinicians' cognitive processes as they navigate complex and uncertain judgements during treatment planning. When systems and workflows are not designed to adequately support human judgement and decision-making, even experts are prone to fallible reasoning due to cognitive biases. Incomplete integration of information or biased interpretations of patient data can lead to clinical errors and delays in the implementation of treatment recommendations. Though their impact is intuitively recognised,

LipidSIM: Inferring mechanistic lipid biosynthesis perturbations from lipidomics with a flexible, low-parameter, Markov modeling framework.

Lipid metabolism is a complex and dynamic system involving numerous enzymes at the junction of multiple metabolic pathways. Disruption of these pathways leads to systematic dyslipidemia, a hallmark of many pathological developments, such as nonalcoholic steatohepatitis and diabetes. Recent advances in computational tools can provide insights into the dysregulation of lipid biosynthesis, but limitations remain due to the complexity of lipidomic data, limited knowledge of interactions among involved enzymes, and technical challenges in standardizing across different lipid types. Here, we present

Dual Functionality of Papaya Leaf Extracts: Anti-Coronavirus Activity and Anti-Inflammation Mechanism.

Papaya leaves have been used as food and traditional herbs for the treatment of cancer, diabetes, asthma, and virus infections, but the active principle has not been understood. We hypothesized that the anti-inflammatory activity could be the predominant underlying principle. To test this, we extracted papaya leaf juice with different organic solvents and found that the ethyl acetate (EA) fraction showed the most outstanding anti-inflammatory activity by suppressing the production of nitric oxide (NO, IC50 = 24.94 ± 2.4 μg/mL) and the expression of pro-inflammatory enzymes, such as inducible n

Application of Machine Learning in a Rodent Malaria Model for Rapid, Accurate, and Consistent Parasite Counts.

Rodent malaria models serve as important preclinical antimalarial and vaccine testing tools. Evaluating treatment outcomes in these models often requires manually counting parasite-infected red blood cells (iRBCs), a time-consuming process, which can be inconsistent between individuals and laboratories. We have developed an easy-to-use machine learning (ML)-based software, Malaria Screener R, to expedite and standardize such studies by automating the counting of Plasmodium iRBCs in rodents. This software can process Giemsa-stained blood smear images captured by any camera-equipped microscope.

Classification of recombinant factor VIII products and implications for clinical practice: A systematic literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Consensus over the definition of recombinant factor VIII (rFVIII) product classification in haemophilia A is lacking. rFVIII products are often classified as standard half-life (SHL) or extended half-life (EHL); despite this, no universally accepted definition currently exists. One proposed definition includes half-life, area under the curve, and technology designed to extend half-life; however, the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis defines activity over time as the most intuitive information for building treatment regimens and the World Federation of Hemophilia
