Individual prediction of dyslexia by single versus multiple deficit models.

The overall goals of this study were to test single versus multiple cognitive deficit models of dyslexia (reading disability) at the level of individual cases and to determine the clinical utility of these models for prediction and diagnosis of dyslexia. To accomplish these goals, we tested five cognitive models of dyslexia--two single-deficit models, two multiple-deficit models, and one hybrid model--in two large population-based samples, one cross-sectional (Colorado Learning Disability Research Center) and one longitudinal (International longitudinal Twin Study). The cognitive deficits incl

Artificial intelligence in thoracic surgery: a narrative review of clinical advances and applications in 2025.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into thoracic surgery accelerated notably over the course of 2025, … toring systems and digital therapeutics (DTx) entered prospective clinical validation. Furthermore, large language models (LLMs) emerged as increasingly important tools for automated surgical documentation. Despite these advances, most studies remain retrospective, and domain shift across institutions limits generalizability. CONCLUSIONS: While AI has substantially af …

Performance of Progressive Generations of GPT on an Exam Designed for Certifying Physicians as Certified Clinical Densitometrists.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT have demonstrated the ability to pass standardized exams. These models are not trained for a specific task, but instead trained to predict sequences of text from large corpora of documents sourced from the internet. It has been shown that even models trained on this general task can pass exams in a variety of domain-specific fields, including the United States Medical Licensing Examination. We asked if large language models would perform as well on a much narrower subdomain tests designed for medical speciali…

Stench of Errors or the Shine of Potential: The Challenge of (Ir)Responsible Use of ChatGPT in Speech-Language Pathology.

BACKGROUND: Integrating large language models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT, into speech-language pathology (SLP) presents promising opportunities and notable challenges. While these tools can support diagnostics, streamline documentation and assist in therapy planning, they also raise concerns related to misinformation, cultural insensitivity, overreliance and ethical ambiguity. Current discourse often centres on technological capabilities, overlooking how future speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are being prepared to use such tools responsibly. AIMS: This paper examines the pedagogical, ethical…

A supplement, not a substitute: Accuracy and completeness of ChatGPT responses for common elbow pathology.

HYPOTHESIS: Large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT have increasingly been used as online resources for patients with orthopedic conditions. Yet there is a paucity of information assessing the ability of LLMs to accurately and completely answer patient questions. The present study comparatively assessed both ChatGPT 3.5 and GPT-4 responses to frequently asked questions on common elbow pathologies, scoring for accuracy and completeness. It was hypothesized that ChatGPT 3.5 and GPT-4 would demonstrate high levels of accuracy for the specific query asked, but some responses would lack completen…

Neurophysiological dynamics of phrase-structure building during sentence processing.

Although sentences unfold sequentially, one word at a time, most linguistic theories propose that their underlying syntactic structure involves a tree of nested phrases rather than a linear sequence of words. Whether and how the brain builds such structures, however, remains largely unknown. Here, we used human intracranial recordings and visual word-by-word presentation of sentences and word lists to investigate how left-hemispheric brain activity varies during the formation of phrase structures. In a broad set of language-related areas, comprising multiple superior temporal and inferior fron

A Conversational Agent for Early Detection of Neurotoxic Effects of Medications through Automated Intensive Observation.

We present a fully automated AI-based system for intensive monitoring of cognitive symptoms of neurotoxicity that frequently appear as a result of immunotherapy of hematologic malignancies. Early manifestations of these symptoms are evident in the patient's speech in the form of mild aphasia and confusion and can be detected and effectively treated prior to onset of more serious and potentially life-threatening impairment. We have developed the Automated Neural Nursing Assistant (ANNA) system designed to conduct a brief cognitive assessment several times per day over the telephone for 5-14 day

Interactive image-to-video transfer learning.

Transfer learning from image to video has become a widely adopted strategy in action recognition. Existing mainstream approaches typically fine-tune the entire network after initialising with pre-trained parameters, which inevitably leads to substantial training overhead. Recent efficiency-oriented methods alleviate this by freezing the backbone during optimisation; however, they tend to overly rely on powerful prior knowledge encoded in image models and often neglect how to effectively perform video reasoning with static backbones. In this paper, we propose an efficient image-to-video transfe

Comparing the Performances of a 54-Year-Old Computer-Based Consultation to ChatGPT-4o.

This study aimed to evaluate and compare the diagnostic responses generated by two artificial intelligence (AI) models developed 54 years apart, and encourage physicians to explore the use of large language models (LLMs) like GPT-4o in clinical practice.A clinical case of metabolic acidosis was presented to GPT-4o, and the model's diagnostic reasoning, data interpretation, and management recommendations were recorded. These outputs were then compared with the responses from Schwartz's 1970 AI model built with a decision-tree algorithm using Conversational Algebraic Language (CAL). Both models …

Leveraging Social Media and AI for Early Community Mental Health Support.

Background Mental health conditions have become a leading cause of disability worldwide, yet stigma, financial barriers, and limited access to care impede effective treatment. Amid these challenges, more people are turning to online platforms like Reddit to express psychological distress and seek informal support. However, these platforms often lack mechanisms to guide users toward professional care. This study explores a community-facing framework that leverages natural language processing and large language models (LLMs) to detect mental health concerns in social media posts and generate per…

Embeddings hidden layers learning for neural network compression.

Sequence modeling neural networks are being deployed over a growing number of applications, a phenomenon partially motivated by the advent of Large Language Models (LLMs), Neural Networks often characterized by billions of parameters. Such a size poses an obstacle to their deployment in constrained devices, which motivates the development of compression methods. In this work, we introduce a new parameter-sharing method that leverages the embedding matrix to learn the model's hidden layers. To demonstrate its effectiveness, we present a new architecture family called ShareBERT, which can preser…

Differentiating nonfluent/agrammatic and logopenic primary progressive aphasia in Catalan-Spanish bilinguals by applying multilingual multimodal machine learning (M³L) to connected speech.

BACKGROUND: The nonfluent/agrammatic (nfv) and logopenic (lv) variants of primary progressive aphasia (PPA) disrupt fluency through distinct underlying neurocognitive mechanisms. Differential diagnosis currently requires hours of cognitive-linguistic testing, with additional barriers for bilingual patients due to a shortage of bilingual service providers and a lack of well-established assessment methods. In English speakers, a promising automated approach for differentiating nfvPPA and lvPPA is to derive speech-timing measures and linguistic features from connected speech as input to machine l

Differential effects of iTBS over domain-general and language-specific brain regions on rule learning.

Rule learning relies on both domain-general and language-specific neural systems, but how these systems interact during learning remains unclear. Guided by the variability-stability-flexibility (VSF) model, we combined intermittent theta-burst stimulation (iTBS) with fMRI to examine the effects of modulating the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (R DLPFC; a domain-general brain area) and left inferior frontal gyrus (L IFG; a language-specific brain area) during phase-structured word- and symbol-rule learning. Two groups of individuals received active iTBS, either over the R DLPFC or L IFG.

Evaluating disparities by social determinants in hospital admission decisions for patients with COVID-19 quaternary hospital early in the pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted significant disparities in hospital outcomes when focusing on social determinants of health. Better understanding the drivers of these disparities is not only critical for COVID-19 care but also to ensure equitable treatment more generally. In this paper, we look at how hospital admission patterns, both to the medical ward and the intensive care unit (ICU), may have differed by race, ethnicity, and social determinants of health. We conducted a retrospective chart review of all patients who presented to the Emergency Department of a large quaternary hospita
