The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the treatment effects of the variable anchorage straightwire technique (VAST) in Angle Class II patients using Ricketts' growth prediction analysis. The subjects belonged to two groups: a control, consisting of 30 untreated Class II Swedish individuals (20 girls, 10 boys) with a mean age of 11.2 years, and the other 29 Swedish patients (14 girls, 15 boys), mean age 12.6 years, post-normal and with an increased overbite (OB), treated with the VAST. Two lateral cephalograms were available for every individual. Growth prediction according to

Adverse effects are results beyond the expected good outcomes of treatment. Like any other field in dentistry and medicine, orthodontics is not immune to such effects. The probability of adverse results in orthodontics increases when important rules and facts are ignored. To illustrate this, treatment and its adverse effects in 2 patients are discussed. In 1 young adult female, a palatally impacted maxillary canine was being moved into its place in the arch when it became ankylosed. Despite the cessation of movement, the orthodontist continued to apply mechanical forces to the canine for an ad

OBJECTIVE: During therapy of distoclusion entailing a rigid, fixed orthodontic appliance, the mandibular fossa and condyle are ideally remodeled, while dentoalveolar effects occur through adaptive mechanisms. Adaptive processes, especially in the fossa region, have not been adequately investigated. Our magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) investigation aimed to assess the effects of therapy with a functional mandibular advancer (FMA) on mandibular fossa morphology.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We monitored via MRI the therapeutic course of 25 patients at three time points. Visual findings and metric ass

CASE REPORT: young adult woman with esthetic complaints regarding her smile and frontal teeth aspect. At first glance, the problem seemed to be only the shape of the lateral upper incisors and a small diastema between the central incisors. The diagnosis shared between the orthodontist and the prosthetist led us to consider some other important aspects, such as the deep bite, the teeth inclination and the lips support. All these findings led us to consider that the right way to improve the esthetics of the patient's smile was to plan an orthodontic treatment. This would serve not only for the d

This case report describes the treatment of a patient with temporomandibular disorder (TMD) and skeletal open bite. First, the patient was treated with a stabilization splint to stabilize the condyles in centric relation and to alleviate TMD signs and symptoms. After making a definitive diagnosis from postsplint records, orthodontic treatment was initiated. Titanium miniplates were placed at bilateral zygomatic buttresses and used as orthodontic anchorage for molar intrusion and distalization. The treatment was completed after 30 months. Satisfactory appearance and function were achieved for t

The application of a combined surgical-orthodontic procedure for the treatment of major facial deformities (eg, asymmetries) and associated malocclusions has become an increasingly prevalent treatment modality over the past few decades. Development of sound conjoint treatment principles made possible the correction of skeletal and dental dysplasias that were unyielding to either surgical or orthodontic treatment alone. The presence and severity of dentofacial asymmetries has been the subject of many commentaries and investigations. Treatment of facial asymmetry has always been a challenge with

OBJECTIVE: Can we correct dental midline discrepancies by systematic torque bends on all canines and premolars without extraction and mesiodistal tooth movement?
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eight orthodontic patients (4 males, 4 emales, mean age 31 years) presented a dental midline discrepancy of 2-4 mm, moderate deviation of the chin, no skeletal asymmetry, and a horizontal orientation of the occlusal plane in the frontal aspect. On the side where the mandible was shifted medially, asymmetric torque bends moved the antagonist canine and both premolar crowns buccally, while palatal crown torque was

This case report presents the treatment of a girl with a Class II horizontal open bite and severe crowding with an invisible appliance. She had been in a severe traffic accident at 5 years 10 months of age. Her teeth, especially the mandibular right lateral incisor, canine, and first premolar had ankylosed, and their roots were severely resorbed and fused to the alveolar bone. Orthodontic treatment started at the age of 12 years. The mandibular left first premolar and both maxillary first premolars were extracted to reduce overjet and crowding. The left first premolar was extracted and transpl

This case report describes the multidisciplinary management of an adolescent girl with traumatic loss of the maxillary right central lateral incisors, and a unilateral Class II crossbite malocclusion. A rapid palatal expansion appliance was used initially to correct the transverse deficiency and secondarily as an anchorage unit for unilateral molar distalization to correct the Class II molar relationship. Temporary incisors were extended from a Nance stabilizing appliance during premolar and canine retraction. A staged approach was used with bone grafting before the placement of 2 single-tooth

OBJECTIVE: Amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) is a heterogeneous group of genetic disorders characterized by developmental abnormalities of tooth enamel. The AI is also seen as part of multi-organ abnormalities, e.g. with cone-rod dystrophy, hypothalamo-hypophyseal insufficiency and renal failure. The present patient with AI and nephrocalcinosis exhibited a phenotype different from previous cases with renal failure. To highlight the characteristics of this rare case, extensive analysis that included histological, biochemical and genetic examinations was performed.
PATIENT: The present Japanese male

BACKGROUND: It is now possible to predictably distalize maxillary first molars in nongrowing patients with the infra-zygomatic gear distalizer and to improve malocclusions without having to extract the premolars and regardless of the patient's compliance. The purpose of this study was to investigate the amount and rate of distal movement of the maxillary first molars using our proposed appliance after extraction of maxillary second molars.
METHODS: Ten nongrowing female patients successfully treated with our proposed appliance were the subjects of this study. The amount, rate, and type of dis

This case report describes the successful orthodontic tooth movement through the maxillary sinus in an adult patient. A 41-year-old Asian woman had severe lip protrusion and multiple missing posterior teeth. Her orthodontic treatment included the extraction of 2 teeth, maximum retraction of the incisors using the extraction spaces and the existing spaces from the missing molars, and closure of all remaining spaces. Even though the treatment time was extended because of the anatomic and biologic challenges associated with moving posterior teeth over a long distance through the maxillary sinus,

Distraction osteogenesis is an alternative treatment option for patients with facial asymmetry and mandibular hypoplasia. New bone is formed between bone segment surfaces that are gradually separated by incremental traction. The purpose of this article is to report the treatment of a 22-year-old man with hemifacial microsomia, facial asymmetry, and a skeletal Class II profile. The patient's left mandibular ramus was lengthened with distraction osteogenesis, and miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expansion was used to correct the maxillary transverse deficiency. Postoperative orthodontic treatmen

We report on the non-surgical management of an adult female whose bilateral mandibular condylar fractures had resulted in a clockwise (posterior) mandibular rotation, limitation of mandibular movements and increased occlusal loading on the molar teeth. She refused maxillary surgery and was treated with a minimally-invasive approach, involving orthodontic fixed appliances and mini-implant intrusion of the maxillary molar teeth. This provided both occlusal and functional improvements, including a significant increase in the inter-incisal distance, which were stable after one year of retention.
