OBJECTIVES: This study was aimed at 1) reporting cases of missed cervical spine injuries treated at a tertiary-level hospital, King Faisal Hospital, Rwanda (KFH-R), and 2) identifying the causes of delaying the diagnosis.
METHODS: We prospectively collected data from patients with a missed or delayed cervical spine and/or cord injury treated at King Faisal Hospital, Kigali for a 12-month period (January 2012 to December 2012). The total number of cervical spine injury patients treated at our center was retrieved from the hospital admission registry.

Klippel-Feil syndrome (KFS) is defined as a congenital fusion of at least two cervical vertebrae. Patients with KFS are known to be at high risk for spinal cord injury in case of cervical trauma even with weak kinetic. We report the case of a patient with C4-C5 and C6-C7 congenital fusion, harbouring C5-C6 post-traumatic spinal cord injury, associated with an odontoid fracture type 2 of Anderson and D'Alonzo classification following a motorbike accident.

METHODS: A total of 60 patients with solely dorsally reconstructed type C fractures of the thoracic spine admitted between January 2000 and December 2003 were retrospectively evaluated. Stability was determined by measuring kyphosis of the vertebral body, the operated segments and of lateral bending on the basis of plain films and computed tomography immediately postoperatively and after 2 and 19 months.
