[Imperative and obstructive urination disorders in patients with chronic inflammatory diseases of the urinary tract].

The estimation of functional parameters of the lower urinary tract in 116 patients with chronic cystitis and 51 patients with chronic nonobstructive pyelonephritis was performed. Urethral instability was revealed in 53 (45.68%) patients with chronic cystitis (mean age, 40.72 +/- 14.45 years), detrusor overactivity--in 10 (8.62%, mean age, 45.55 +/- 13.45 years) patients. Variations in detrusor pressure were 22.16 +/- 15.8 cm H20. Combination of urethral instability and detrusor overactivity was diagnosed in 26 (22.4%) patients of the study group (mean age, 65.16 +/- 10.49 years). The maximum u

Heart Rate Variability in a Vocal Stress Test with Special Consideration of the Objective Voice Function.

OBJECTIVE: Many employees, especially in voice-intensive professions, are under psychological stress at work, which is very difficult to objectify. The aim of the study was to analyze correlations between heart rate variability (HRV) parameters and objective voice function using weighted voice parameters (Dysphonia Severity Index [DSI]) in order to determine whether subjects with impaired vocal function show a predominance of sympathetic control during a vocal stress test. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective. METHODS: Fifty-three people of working age were examined. After asking for sociodemographic,

Effects of endothelium-derived catecholamines on heart rate, blood pressure and gill ventilation in the rainbow trout.

In most fish and tetrapods, regulation of cardiovascular system is traditionally attributed to the actions of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems on the heart and vasculature. Beyond the classic neurotransmitters (adrenaline, noradrenaline, and dopamine), the vascular endothelium can synthesize newly discovered catecholamines that modulate vascular tone and cardiac function independently of neuronal release, but their cardiorespiratory effects in fish remain unknown. Therefore, we characterized the cardiorespiratory responses of conscious rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss; n =…

Cardiac coherence: a new, noninvasive measure of autonomic nervous system order.

Although cardiac sympathovagal regulation has been studied during stress using power spectral density analysis of heart rate variability, little is known about its regulation during emotional states. Using heart rate variability measurements, we studied autonomic balance in 20 subjects trained in a mental and emotional self-management technique called Freeze-Frame. The study was conducted in two environments: under controlled laboratory conditions, and under real-life stressful conditions in the workplace. Power spectral density plots of R-R intervals obtained from electrocardiogram recordings

[The hypertensive crisis in childhood].

Blood pressure, which ist the product of cardiac output and peripheral vascular resistance is regulated by a complex feedback mechanism involving the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems and hormones. An acute disturbance of regulation may lead to a life-threatening increase in blood pressure. Diagnosis is based upon a careful measurement of blood pressure, which must be performed under internationally standardized conditions. Hypertensive crisis refers to a rapid blood pressure increase greater than 30 mmHg above the age-related 95th percentile. The main causes of hypertension in childhood

Bone mechanical loading reduces heart rate and increases heart rate variability in mice.

Cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis are clinically associated. Bone adapts to mechanical forces by altering its overall structure and mass. In response to mechanical strain bone cells release signaling molecules and activate the nervous system. Bone also exhibits endocrine functions that modulate a number of tissues including the heart. We hypothesized that bone mechanical loading acutely alters cardiac function via neural and/or endocrine mechanisms. To test this hypothesis, we performed in vivo tibia mechanical loading in anesthetized mice while monitoring heart parameters using electroc

Autonomic nervous system imbalance in diabetic mouse choroids.

PURPOSE: We investigated neurohomeostasis and its possible underlying mechanisms in the choroids of diabetic mice. METHODS: Streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice were used in this study. Choroidal nerve fiber alterations were observed via transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The levels of epinephrine and acetylcholine in the choroid were determined via ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), choline acetyl transferase (ChAT), and neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS), vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), neuropeptide Y (NPY), and cal

Dimensions of childhood adversity differentially affect autonomic nervous system coordination in response to stress.

It is well-established that disrupted autonomic nervous system (ANS) reactivity exacerbates risk for long-term maladjustment following childhood adversity (CA). However, few studies have integrated measures of both the sympathetic (SNS) and parasympathetic (PNS) branches of the ANS, resulting in a unidimensional understanding of ANS functioning as a mechanism of risk. Further, past work has primarily measured CA only at the aggregate level (e.g. "total CA"), necessitating further research to accurately characterize this risk pathway. The present study examines how CA, measured cumulatively and

Cardiovascular autonomic function in patients with primary achalasia.

Impaired gastrointestinal function outside the esophagus has been found in achalasic patients. Moreover, achalasia may occur in diseases in which a systemic dysautonomia is evident. These findings raise the question of whether a generalized subclinical alteration of autonomic control is also present in primary achalasia. Cardiovascular reflex tests and power spectral analysis of heart rate variability were studied in patients with primary achalasia to establish whether autonomic nervous system changes are present in districts other than the gastrointestinal tract. Nineteen normotensive patient

Sympathetic Nerve Hyperactivity in the Spleen: Causal for Nonpathogenic-Driven Chronic Immune-Mediated Inflammatory Diseases (IMIDs)?

Immune-Mediated Inflammatory Diseases (IMIDs) is a descriptive term coined for an eclectic group of diseases or conditions that share common inflammatory pathways, and for which there is no definitive etiology. IMIDs affect the elderly most severely, with many older individuals having two or more IMIDs. These diseases include, but are not limited to, type-1 diabetes, obesity, hypertension, chronic pulmonary disease, coronary heart disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and autoimmunity, such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), Sjőgren's syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus, psoriasis, psoriatic arth

Further Understanding of Neuro-Immune Interactions in Allergy: Implications in Pathophysiology and Role in Disease Progression.

The complicated interaction between the central and the autonomic (sympathetic, parasympathetic, and enteric) nervous systems on the one hand and the immune system and its components, on the other hand, seems to substantially contribute to allergy pathophysiology, uncovering an under-recognized association that could have diagnostic and therapeutic potentials. Neurons connect directly with and regulate the function of many immune cells, including mast cells, the cells that have a leading role in allergic disorders. Proinflammatory mediators such as cytokines, neurotrophins, chemokines, and neu

Is Neuronal Histamine Signaling Involved in Cancer Cachexia? Implications and Perspectives.

In this paper, we present evidence in support of our hypothesis that the neuronal histaminergic system might be involved in cancer cachexia. … ur hypothesis in short is that hypothalamic histaminergic neurons are stimulated by inputs from the parasympathetic nervous system (PSNS), which senses tumor traits early in cancer development. Histamine release in the preoptic area of the hypothalamus primarily activates brown adipose tissue (BAT), triggering a highly energy demanding mechanism. Chronic activation of BAT, whic …

Physiological mechanisms and adaptation in high-performance shooting: a biomarker review.

Precision shooting depends on the coordinated integration of multiple psychophysiological systems. This review summarizes the current literature on quantifiable biomarkers associated with high performance in shooting sports, examining neural, cardiac, oculomotor, muscular, postural, and respiratory activity. Special attention is given to individual variability in postural control and sensorimotor integration as key factors distinguishing expert from novice shooters. Electroencephalographic studies show that experienced shooters exhibit characteristic patterns of cortical activity, including le

Disturbed Cardiorespiratory Adaptation in Preeclampsia: Return to Normal Stress Regulation Shortly after Delivery?

Women with pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia appear to be at increased risk of metabolic and vascular diseases in later life. Previous research has also indicated disturbed cardiorespiratory adaptation during pregnancy. The aim of this study was to follow up on the physiological stress response in preeclampsia several weeks postpartum. A standardized laboratory test was used to illustrate potential deviations in the physiological stress responding to mildly stressful events of the kind and intensity in which they regularly occur in further everyday life after pregnancy. Fifteen to sevent

Effects of cholinergic blockade on hemodynamic disturbances and intestinal lesions in endotoxic shock in newborn piglets.

The parasympathetic nervous system actively participates in the regulation of pathophysiologic responses in circulatory shock. To determine the effects of cholinergic blockade in endotoxic shock in newborn piglets, 16 chronically instrumented newborn piglets were infused with 10 mg/kg of endotoxin over 10 min. Eight animals were injected intravenously with 10 mg/kg of anisodamine, an anticholinergic drug, 10 min before endotoxin and then with escalating doses of 2, 5, 10, and 20 mg/kg every 10 min, beginning 60 min after endotoxin. The other eight animals were given saline as a control. Endoto…

The Neuroimmune-Cardiac Axis: Inflammation and Autonomic Remodeling as Drivers of Cardiac Arrhythmogenesis.

Cardiac arrhythmias are traditionally attributed to structural and electrophysiological abnormalities; however, increasing evidence highlights the critical role of systemic inflammation and autonomic dysregulation in arrhythmogenesis. The neuroimmune-cardiac axis represents a bidirectional communication network between the autonomic nervous system and immune signaling pathways that collectively modulate cardiac electrical stability. Pro-inflammatory cytokines and immune mediators influence central autonomic regulatory centers, leading to sympathetic overactivation and parasympathetic withdrawa

Key issues in Rett syndrome: emotional, behavioural and autonomic dysregulation (EBAD) - a target for clinical trials.

Complex neurodevelopmental disorders need multi-disciplinary treatment approaches for optimal care. The clinical effectiveness of treatments is limited in patients with rare genetic syndromes with multisystem morbidity. Emotional and behavioural dysregulation is common across many neurodevelopmental disorders. It can manifest in children across multiple diagnostic groups, including those on the autism spectrum and in rare genetic syndromes such as Rett Syndrome (RTT). There is, however a remarkable scarcity in the literature on the impact of the autonomic component on emotional and behavioural

The impact of stress systems and lifestyle on dyslipidemia and obesity in anxiety and depression.

BACKGROUND: Dyslipidemia and obesity have been observed in persons with severe anxiety or depression, and in tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) users. This likely contributes to the higher risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in anxiety and depressive disorders. We aimed to elucidate whether biological stress systems or lifestyle factors underlie these associations. If so, they may be useful targets for CVD prevention and intervention. METHODS: Within 2850 Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety (NESDA) participants, we evaluated the explaining impact of biological stress systems (i.e., the h

Neurophysiology of gastrointestinal pain.

The only non-general sensation that can be evoked from the gastrointestinal (GI) tract is that of pain ranging from mild discomfort to intense pain. However, in certain regions of the gut, such as the rectum and gastro-oesophagus, the feeling of pain can be preceded by non-painful sensations of distension at lower stimulus intensities. GI pain is often dull, aching, ill-defined and badly localized. In some cases, GI pain is projected to areas of the body away from the originating viscus ('referred' pain). These properties indicate that the representation of internal organs within the central n
