Preserved conceptual priming in Alzheimer's disease.

We assessed Alzheimer's disease (AD) and healthy older adult control (HC) group performance on: (1) a conceptual priming task, in which participants had to make a semantic decision as to whether a degraded picture of an object encountered previously belonged to the category of living or non-living things; and (2) a recognition memory task. The AD group showed a dissociation between impaired performance on the recognition task and preserved priming for semantic decisions to degraded pictures. We argue that it is not whether priming is conceptual or perceptual that is important for the observati

Appraisal process in sheep (Ovis aries): interactive effect of suddenness and unfamiliarity on cardiac and behavioral responses.

Appraisal theories state that an emotion results from an individual's evaluation of a stimulating event, which is based on a set of criteria. Each criterion triggers specific expressions that can be modulated by the outcome of other criteria. The authors analyzed the effects of the criteria of suddenness, unfamiliarity, and their combination on behavioral and cardiac responses in lambs (Ovis aries). Lambs were exposed to a visual stimulus that appeared either rapidly or slowly and was either unfamiliar or familiar. Suddenness induced a startle response and an increase in heart rate. Unfamiliar

Selective neurotoxic damage to the hippocampal formation impairs performance of the transverse patterning and location memory tasks in rhesus macaques.

Monkeys with neurotoxic (ibotenic acid) damage to the hippocampal formation and unoperated controls were trained on two sets of transverse patterning problems (A+/B-, B+/C-, C+/A-, and D+/E-, E+/F-, F+/D-) and a delayed nonmatching-to-location paradigm (DNML) with delays of 10s, 30s, 120s, and 600s. Hippocampal lesions produced a size- and area-dependent impairment on transverse patterning. Damage largely limited to the right hippocampus in one subject had no effect on performance on the task. Of the remaining four subjects, two with hippocampal damage greater than 40% bilaterally were unable

A stimulus-centered reading disorder for words and numbers: Is it neglect dyslexia?

A single case, RCG, showing a unilateral reading disorder without unilateral spatial neglect was studied. The disorder was characterized by substitutions of the initial (left) letters of words, nonwords and Arabic numbers, independently of egocentered spatial coordinates. MRI showed a bilateral lesion with the involvement of the splenium. Although, within the framework of the visual word recognition model proposed by Caramazza and Hillis (1990), RCG disorder could be defined as a stimulus-centered neglect dyslexia, we discuss the hypothesis of a dissociation in neural correlates and mechanisms

Selective processing of linguistic and pictorial food stimuli in females with anorexia and bulimia nervosa.

PURPOSE: This study investigated subjects with eating disorders' selective attention to linguistic and pictorial representations of food stimuli in a version of the Stroop color-naming task. If subjects with eating disorders' attention really are biased by food stimuli, one would expect equally delayed color-naming latencies to food pictures as previous studies have found to food words. METHOD: Twenty females with eating disorders (anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or a combination of both) and 24 female controls identified the color of Stroop versions of linguistic and pictorial representat

Deprivation of parenting disrupts development of homeostatic and reward systems in marmoset monkey offspring.

BACKGROUND: Early environment is a major determinant of long-term mental health, evidenced by the relationship between early-life neglect or abuse and chronically increased vulnerability to developmental psychopathology, including major depressive disorder (MDD). Animal studies can increase understanding of environmentally mediated causal risk processes. We describe how daily deprivation of biological parenting in primate infants disrupts development of homeostatic and reward systems central to MDD. METHODS: Nine breeding pairs of marmoset monkeys provided control twins (CON) and early-depriv

Long-lasting cortical plasticity in the object naming system.

A single exposure to an object can produce long-lasting behavioral change. Here, using event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we provide evidence for long-lasting changes in cortical activity associated with perceiving and naming objects. In posterior regions, we observed an immediate (30-second) and long-lasting (3-day) decrease in neural activity after brief (200-ms) exposure to nameable and nonsense objects. In addition, slower-developing decreases in left inferior frontal activity were observed concurrently with increases in left insula activity, only for nameable obje

Reducing overselective attention to compound visual cues with extended training in adolescents with severe mental retardation.

Because of the devastating impact a disturbance in responding to multiple cues can have on a child's development, this investigation determined whether computer touch-screen technology could be utilized to improve the attentional skills of students with severe developmental disabilities after attentional deficits were initially identified. In particular, we assessed whether establishing prior reinforcement histories for separate stimuli would control how adolescents with severe mental retardation attended to visual compounds when extended training was given. Initially, prior reinforcement cont

Dual task performance in HIV-1 infection.

Fifty HIV-infected individuals and 20 uninfected controls participated in an investigation of dual task performance in HIV-1 infection. Participants first engaged in a simple auditory reaction time (RT) task followed by a visual choice RT task (single task condition), and then they simultaneously engaged in both tasks (dual task condition). Under single task conditions, the HIV+ participants did not significantly differ from controls on either simple or choice RT (though a trend was evident on single task choice RT). In contrast, under dual task conditions the HIV+ group's performance decremen

Re-evaluation of a programmed method to teach generalized identity matching to sample.

Programmed training in identity matching to sample was given to six participants who had severe mental retardation, mental age-equivalent scores of 3.0 years or less, and histories of failures in prior assessments and training attempts with standard procedures. An intermediate goal of the training program was to establish one-trial discrimination learning (OTDL), where new discriminations are acquired after a single training trial, OTDL was included because an analysis of the task requirements for identity matching suggested that it could be a prerequisite skill. One participant was eliminated

Visual complexity in letter-by-letter reading: "pure" alexia is not pure.

Standard accounts of pure alexia have favoured the view that this acquired disorder of reading arises from damage to a left posterior occipital cortex mechanism dedicated to the processing of alphanumeric symbols. We challenge these accounts in two experiments and demonstrate that patients with this reading deficit are also impaired at object identification. In the first experiment, we show that a single subject, EL, who shows all the hallmark features of pure alexia, is impaired at picture identification across a large set of stimuli. As the visual complexity of pictures increases, so EL's re

Event-related brain potentials elicited by rhyming and non-rhyming pictures differentiate subgroups of reading disabled adolescents.

Event-related brain potentials were recorded while disabled adolescent subjects read and judged whether two sequentially presented pictures had names that rhymed. Subjects with relatively good phonetic skills displayed an N400 priming effect, i.e., a significant reduction in the amplitude of the negative peak, occurring approximately 400 msec post-stimulus, for pictures with names that rhymed with preceding pictures as compared with pictures that had names that did not rhyme with the prime. No such effect was evident for subjects with relatively poor phonetic skills. This lack of an N400 primi

The perception of curvature can be selectively disrupted in prosopagnosia.

A brain-damaged patient with prosopagnosia and a group of age- and education-matched control subjects evaluated curved and straight versions of different sorts of stimuli in different tasks. The patient consistently required more time to encode curved than straight stimuli, relative to the control subjects. Specifically, he had a deficit when he compared curved lines that were simultaneously visible, when he compared curved lines with those previously seen, when he examined a curved shape to determine whether an X was on or off the shape, and when he read curved script. He also made more error

Effects of picture referencing on PVC chair, love seat, and settee assemblies by students with mental retardation.

This study examined the effects of two indirect corrective feedback procedures on the assembly skills of five secondary students with moderate mental retardation. Picture and video referencing conditions, during which the experimenters pointed to a picture or video screen following a performance error and requested the student do the step again, were more effective than assembly photographs, sequenced pictures, sequenced pictures and modeling, and video modeling conditions. Picture referencing enabled each participant to independently assemble a 13-step, 31-piece chair that required assembly o

Semantic discrimination in nonspeaking youngsters with moderate or severe retardation: electrophysiological correlates.

Recent studies have used auditory evoked response (AER) procedures to study word meaning in young infants. The present study represents an initial application of these procedures to nonspeaking subjects with moderate or severe mental retardation. AERs were recorded from electrodes placed on the scalp over frontal, temporal, and parietal regions of the left and right hemispheres. As six symbol-experienced subjects viewed visual-graphic symbols (lexigrams), a series of probe tones were presented to elicit the AERs. Half of the symbols were meaningful to the subjects. AER activity recorded from t

Prosopagnosia and object agnosia without covert recognition.

Investigations of the visual recognition abilities of the patient M.S. are reported. M.S. is unable to achieve overt recognition of any familiar faces, and many everyday objects. In Task 1 he showed semantic priming from name primes but not from face primes in a name recognition task. In Task 2 he showed no advantage in learning true (face + correct name) rather than untrue (face + someone else's name) pairings of faces and names. In Task 3 semantic priming of lexical decision was only found for object picture primes that M.S. was able to recognize overtly. In Task 4 faster matching of photogr

Neuropsychological demonstration of splenial interhemispheric disconnection in a case of "optic anomia".

A patient is described whose neuropsychological deficit corresponded to the notion of "optic aphasia" or, better, optic anomia. The functional deficit was undirectional, i.e. there was a severe impairment in the naming of visually presented stimuli without impairment in the comprehension of the corresponding names. The splenial disconnection was demonstrated by intact cross modal matching within the right hemisphere as well as preserved left-handed tactile naming, which is processed via mid-callosal pathways. The psychological interpretation is discussed in terms of visual and tactile semantic

Abnormal GABAergic function and face processing in schizophrenia: A pharmacologic-fMRI study.

The involvement of the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) system in schizophrenia is suggested by postmortem studies and the common use of GABA receptor-potentiating agents in treatment. In a recent study, we used a benzodiazepine challenge to demonstrate abnormal GABAergic function during processing of negative visual stimuli in schizophrenia. This study extended this investigation by mapping GABAergic mechanisms associated with face processing and social appraisal in schizophrenia using a benzodiazepine challenge. Fourteen stable, medicated schizophrenia/schizoaffective patients (SZ) and 13 heal

Defining face perception areas in the human brain: a large-scale factorial fMRI face localizer analysis.

A number of human brain areas showing a larger response to faces than to objects from different categories, or to scrambled faces, have been identified in neuroimaging studies. Depending on the statistical criteria used, the set of areas can be overextended or minimized, both at the local (size of areas) and global (number of areas) levels. Here we analyzed a whole-brain factorial functional localizer obtained in a large sample of right-handed participants (40). Faces (F), objects (O; cars) and their phase-scrambled counterparts (SF, SO) were presented in a block design during a one-back task
