OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to examine whether dispositional interpersonal callousness, negative emotionality, and hyperactivity/impulsivity uniquely influence the development of childhood-onset conduct problems and persistent criminal behavior in males, and to determine whether specific facets of negative emotionality (dysregulated anger versus anxiety) in childhood are differentially associated with the development of chronic antisocial behavior.
METHOD: Childhood dispositional features and conduct problems were assessed semiannually using parent- and teacher-report measures acro

Although self-injurious behavior is a common comorbid behavior problem among individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders, little is known about its etiology and underlying neurobiology. Interestingly, it shows up in various forms across patient groups with distinct genetic errors and diagnostic categories. This suggests that there may be shared neuropathology that confers vulnerability in these disparate groups. Convergent evidence from clinical pharmacotherapy, brain imaging studies, postmortem neurochemical analyses, and animal models indicates that dopaminergic insufficiency is a key cont

Self-injurious behavior (SIB) is a distressing type of problem behavior that may be exhibited in individuals with intellectual disabilities (IDs). This article provides an overview of SIB, its underlying causes and functions, as well as other key variables associated with its manifestation. Adults with IDs are routinely living longer. Given this rapidly emerging and expanding population, special attention is given to SIB in aging adults with IDs that may result from age-related risk factors. Risks include increasing and unresolved health issues, physical changes, declining physical abilities, …

Behavioral problems in children have been increasingly linked to environmental exposures. Microplastics (MPs), prevalent in urban environments, are emerging contaminants with potential neurodevelopmental effects. This study examines the relationship between urinary MPs and behavioral outcomes among primary school children in Shenyang, China. This study was conducted involving 1000 children aged 6-9 years from 40 schools across Shenyang. Urinary MPs, including polyamide (PA), polypropylene (PP), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC), were quantified using optical microscopy. Behavioral outcomes were ass

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is associated with increased risk of emotional and behavioral problems in children, but the mechanisms underlying this relationship are not fully understood.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate sleep disturbance and sleep duration as potential mediators between AD and emotional/behavioral problems in children across childhood.
METHODS: We performed mediation analyses at 3 timepoints using data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children birth cohort in the United Kingdom. The exposure was child's AD status, categorized as no AD, inactive AD, mild active AD,

Pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the leading cause of acquired disability in children, potentially leading to neurocognitive deficits that affect daily functioning. This study explored the impact of pediatric TBI on neurocognitive network organization and its relation to intelligence and behavior problems. This observational multicenter study prospectively included 113 children with mild to severe TBI and 113 neurologically healthy (NH) children, matched for sex, age and socio-economic status. Six months post-TBI, neurocognitive functioning was assessed using computerized tests, intel

The Communities That Care (CTC) prevention system has shown effects on reducing incidence and prevalence of problem behaviors among a panel of youth followed from 5th through 12th grade. The present report examines whether similar intervention effects could be observed using a repeated cross-sectional design in the same study. Data were from a community-randomized trial of 24 US towns. Cross-sectional samples of sixth, eighth, and tenth graders were surveyed at four waves. Two-stage ANCOVA analyses estimated differences between CTC and control communities in community-level prevalence of probl…

OBJECTIVE: To describe social and emotional problems in children and adolescents with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and propose interventions. Our hypothesis is that children with NF1 will have significantly more social and emotional problems, compared with their unaffected siblings and children in the general population.
STUDY DESIGN: Forty-three children with NF1 and 22 unaffected siblings (ages 5 to 18 years) were assessed with a standardized test completed by parents and teachers (the Child Behavior Checklist).
RESULTS: As with other aspects of NF1, there was variable expressivity. Howe

Universal screening at university health centers can facilitate early identification and treatment of behavioral health problems common among college students. This article describes the (a) process of implementing behavioral health screening at a university health center and (b) results of universal screening for depression, suicidal ideation, alcohol misuse, tobacco use, and sleep problems. We discuss the decision points involved in screening, including what to screen for, whom to screen, how to implement the screening measure, and how to deal with patients who screen positive. The purpose of the present study was to identify the mediating effects of emotion regulation on the association between cumulative childhood trauma and behavior problems in sexually abused children in Korea, using structural equation modeling (SEM). Data were collected on 171 children (ages 6-13 years) referred to a public counseling center for sexual abuse in Seoul, Korea. Cumulative childhood traumas were defined on the basis of number of traumas (physical abuse, witnessing domestic violence, neglect, traumatic separation from parent, and sexual abuse) and the severity and duration of trauma

Although autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is associated with significant mental health concerns, little is known about suicidality, particularly among youth. To address this critical gap in the literature, the current study examined the predictive validity of (1) demographics, (2) core autism symptoms, (3) cognitive abilities and adaptive behavior, (4) comorbid psychopathology, and (5) medical problems, for suicide-related behaviors among autistic youth (N = 481; Mage = 11.56 years). As indices of suicide-related behaviors, parents reported on whether the child had ever (1) talked about killing

Two psychiatrists, using standardized clinical examinations, found that 21% of 125 patients newly admitted to nursing homes had delusions. The psychiatric disorders associated with these delusions are described. Delusional patients were more behaviorally disturbed before admission than nondelusional patients. These behavior problems were often the reason for admission, and they persisted after admission. Nursing home staff members infrequently identified and often inappropriately treated delusional patients. Since delusions are an important potentially treatable cause of behavior problems in n

Despite the risks of COVID-19, some people ignore the COVID-19 precautionary measures, endangering public health. We aimed to investigate how and in what conditions trust in government and health authorities encourage individuals to comply with COVID-19 precautionary measures. Based on a sample of 664 respondents, we found that an increase in the level of trust in government is associated with higher compliance with COVID-19 precautionary measures. We also found that problem awareness mediates the effect of trust in government on compliance with COVID-19 precautionary measures. In addition, we

A multiple mediation model was proposed to integrate core concepts of the social axioms framework and the social cognitive theory in order to understand gambling behavior. It was hypothesized that the influence of general fate control belief on problem gambling and negative mood would be mediated by gambling-specific beliefs. Data from 773 Chinese college recreational gamblers were collected. The bootstrapping procedure was used to test the multiple mediation hypotheses. Significant indirect effects of fate control belief on problem gambling and negative mood through two gambling-specific medi

The purpose of this study was to estimate the prevalence of parental problem drinking reported by a national sample of college students and to examine the relations between such reports and respondents' patterns of drinking, alcohol abuse, abstinence, and utilization of treatment/counseling. Responses to mailed questionnaires completed by a random sample of 17,592 students at a representative national sample of 140 four-year colleges were analyzed using logistic regression. About 10% of college students reported problem-drinking parents. These children of problem drinkers (COPDs) exhibited a b

The relationship between the severity and duration of asthma and psychological adjustment was investigated in 29 children with mild and 31 children with moderately severe asthma, who were compared with 60 healthy control children. The severity of asthma was evaluated using the Pearlman-Bierman classification. Psychological adjustment was measured using the Achenbach Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and a semi-structured interview. The results of the interviews indicated that regressive symptoms such as clinging, childish behaviour, dependence, and a demanding nature were widespread. Using the i

After a short review of some relevant theories focusing mainly on their developmental aspects, an own model is proposed. This is statistically analysed by means of the LISREL-algorithm, which is applied to data concerning crises behavior in a problematic housing situation, and which were gained from the Bonn-Longitudinal Study of Aging. From the psychological point of view, especially those findings seem to be important which imply that an active and problem-oriented coping strategy is often joined but not overruled by a passive and problem-disoriented one, whereas, if a problem-disoriented st

The present study examines the relationship between substance use, mental health problems, and violence in a sample of offenders released from prison and referred to substance abuse treatment programs. Data from 34 sites (n = 1,349) in a federally funded cooperative, the Criminal Justice Drug Abuse Treatment Studies (CJDATS), were analyzed. Among parolees referred to substance abuse treatment, self-reports for the six-month period before the arrest resulting in their incarceration revealed frequent problems with both substance use and mental health. For most offenders with substance use proble
