Could resistance training prevent or improve work-related musculoskeletal disorders among surgeons?

Studies have demonstrated the negative impact that work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) have on surgeons. These are also likely to … eover, RT has been shown to reduce all-cause mortality by up to 15%, increase bone density, improve proprioception and reduce the fear of movement due to pain. Alongside ergonomic improvement and stretching, we recommend RT as an activity to improve general health and WMSDs.

The performance of cruciate-retaining implants for primary total knee arthroplasty in valgus deformed knees: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Valgus deformity of the knee comprises upwards of 15 % of the deformities in primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) patients. 1,2 The two implants most commonly used in valgus deformed knees are posterior stabilizing (PS) and cruciate-retaining (CR) implants. CR implants may offer a more advantageous construct due to the retention of the PCL for proprioception and less bony resection compared to PS implants. The purpose of this systematic review is to aggregate findings for cruciate-retaining implants used in primary TKA with valgus deformed knees. METHODS: In compliance with PRISM…

Effects of Acupuncture in the Treatment of Dogs with Neurological Sequels of Distemper Virus.

BACKGROUND: Acupuncture (AP) has been empirically used to relieve post-canine distemper virus (CDV) infection neurological signs in veterina … 75% and 25% of the dogs, respectively. At the end of treatment, the proportion of dogs with normal proprioception, posture, hopping (p < 0.001), and superficial pain sensation responses (p = 0.004) was greater than pretreatment values. CONCLUSION: AP/EA therapy promoted significant neurological recovery in CDV-infected dogs and may be considered within the chr …

[Recurrent myelitis in a case of IgG4-related respiratory disease].

We report an 80-year-old man with IgG4-related pleuritis who had been treated with a low dose oral steroid for two years and developed recurrent myelitis. He was admitted to our hospital with gradually worsening numbness in the lower body and difficulty in walking due to mild weakness and loss of proprioception in the legs. T2-weighted MR images of the spinal cord showed a high signal intensity lesion, located centrally in the spinal cord at the Th2-4 spine levels. Laboratory data revealed an elevated serum IgG4 level and cerebrospinal fluid protein level. Anti-aquaporin 4 antibody, anti-myeli…

Sensory innervation of the human palmar aponeurosis in healthy individuals and patients with palmar fibromatosis.

The human palmar aponeurosis is involved in hand proprioception, and it contains different sensory corpuscle morphotypes that serve this role. In palmar fibromatosis (classically referred to as Dupuytren's disease), the palmar aponeurosis undergoes fibrous structural changes that, presumably, also affect the nervous system, causing altered perception. We analysed the various sensory nerve formation morphotypes in the palmar aponeuroses of healthy subjects and patients with palmar fibromatosis. To do this, we used immunohistochemistry for corpuscular constituents and the putative mechanoprotein…

A cadaveric validation of a method based on impact analysis to monitor the femoral stem insertion.

The success of cementless hip arthroplasty depends on the primary stability of the femoral stem (FS). It remains difficult to assess the optimal impaction energy to guarantee the FS stability while avoiding bone fracture. The aim of this study is to compare the results of a method based on the use of an instrumented hammer to determine the insertion endpoint of cementless FS in a cadaveric model with two other methods using i) the surgeon proprioception and ii) video motion tracking. Different FS were impacted in nine human cadaveric femurs. For each configuration, the number of impacts realiz…

Autotransplantation of Mandibular Third Molar with Buccal Cortical Plate to Replace Vertically Fractured Mandibular Second Molar: A Novel Technique.

Tooth replacement often leads to inadequate vertical volume in the recipient site bone when a tooth has been extracted because of a vertical … a normal bone level. Advantages of autotransplantation over dental implants include maintenance of proprioception, possible orthodontic movements, and a relatively low cost. This case report demonstrates that an autotransplantation of a third molar attached to its buccal cortical plate is a viable option to replace teeth with a VRF.

The results suggest a probable dependence on non-vestibular information, i.e. proprioception, in facilitating compensation of static vestibular deficits. The similarity between the SVH and SVV measurements confirms that either test can be used clinically for patients with vestibular lesions.

Muscle damage from eccentric exercise: mechanism, mechanical signs, adaptation and clinical applications.

In eccentric exercise the contracting muscle is forcibly lengthened; in concentric exercise it shortens. While concentric contractions initi … . As well as damage to muscle fibres there is evidence of disturbance of muscle sense organs and of proprioception. A second period of exercise, a week after the first, produces much less damage. This is the result of an adaptation process. One proposed mechanism for the adaptation is an increase in sarcomere number in muscle fibres. This leads to a secondary sh …

Small-fiber sensory neuropathies: clinical course and neuropathology of idiopathic cases.

We describe the clinical features, natural history, and neuropathology of 32 patients presenting with "burning feet," for whom no specific cause was identified. All had neuropathic pain in the feet and morphological abnormalities of cutaneous innervation in skin obtained using punch biopsy. Most (29) had an abnormal sensory examination. All had normal strength, proprioception, tendon reflexes, and nerve conductions. Two clinical patterns were apparent, based on natural history and spatial distribution of cutaneous denervation. Most (28) patients presented with neuropathic pain initially restri…

The impact of bimanual reach training with augmented position sense feedback on post-stroke upper limb somatosensory and motor impairment.

BACKGROUND: Impaired arm position sense is a common somatosensory impairment after stroke, which significantly impacts the performance of functional activities using the upper limb. However, few clinical interventions target loss of position sense after stroke. Our aim was to use interlimb force-coupling to augment position sense of the stroke-affected arm during a bilateral reaching task and investigate the impact of training with this feedback manipulation on measures of arm position matching ability and both bilateral and unilateral motor control. METHODS: Twenty-four participants with a h

Effects of arm-support exoskeletons on pointing accuracy and movement.

Exoskeletons are wearable devices that support or augment users' physical abilities. Previous studies indicate that they reduce the physical demands of repetitive tasks such as those involving heavy material handling, work performed with arms elevated, and the use of heavy tools. However, there have been concerns about exoskeletons hindering movement and reducing its precision. To this end, the current study investigated how proprioception enables people to point to targets in a blindfolded, repetitive pointing task, and their ability to recalibrate their pointing movement based on visual feed…
