Harm-Reduction Programs and Interventions for Equity-Deserving Populations Who Use Crack-Cocaine: A Scoping Review.

<p>Background: Crack-cocaine use is associated with severe physical and mental health consequences, including cardiac, pulmonary, and psychiatric conditions. It also heightens the risk of overdose and transmission of infectious diseases such as HIV, tuberculosis, and hepatitis. Equity-deserving populations - more specifically, groups affected by socioeconomic marginalization, discrimination, and systemic inequities - are disproportionately impacted. In recent years, its rising prevalence in European cities has underscored crack-cocaine as a growing social and public health concern. This trend

Changes in Sero-immunological Status for Infectious Diseases in Solid Organ Transplantation: A 20-Year Single-Center Study in Korea.

BACKGROUND: With increasing solid organ transplantations (SOTs), updated sero-immunological data are essential, as immune profiles shift across generations and influence preventive strategies. We aimed to evaluate the current sero-immunological status of SOT recipients in Korea. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed pre-transplant sero-immunological test results for 12 infectious diseases from SOT recipients and donors at a single center over 20 yrs. All serological test results obtained during pre-transplant evaluations were included; identical results from repeat tests conducted within 1 yr

Granulomatous Tubulointerstitial Nephritis as a Rare Cause of Allograft Failure: A Case Report.

Although granulomatous interstitial nephritis (GIN) is a rare histological finding in kidney transplants, the joint occurrence of GIN and focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) has not, to our knowledge, been reported in the literature. We report a case of GIN and de novo FSGS in kidney transplant recipients leading to allograft failure. A 69-year-old male with a history of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) of unknown etiology, as well as liver failure from hepatitis B and C co-infection, initially had a living unrelated kidney transplant (LURT) in 2007 and subsequently received both liver and

One Health at gunpoint: Impact of wild boars as exotic species in Brazil - A review.

Wild boars have been listed among the 100 most invasive species worldwide, spreading impacts to all continents, with the exception of Antarctica. In Brazil, a major source of introduction was a commercial livestock importation for exotic meat market, followed by successive escapes and releases to natural ecosystems. Currently found in all six Brazilian biomes, with reports in 11 Brazilian states, wild boars have invaded natural and agricultural areas. Wild boars have been reportedly indicated as hosts and reservoirs of several zoonotic diseases in Brazil, including toxoplasmosis, salmonelosis,

Improved Biosafety and Biosecurity Measures and/or Strategies to Tackle Laboratory-Acquired Infections and Related Risks.

Herein, we reviewed laboratory-acquired infections (LAIs) along with their health-related biological risks to provide an evidence base to tackle biosafety/biosecurity and biocontainment issues. Over the past years, a broad spectrum of pathogenic agents, such as bacteria, fungi, viruses, parasites, or genetically modified organisms, have been described and gained a substantial concern due to their profound biological as well as ecological risks. Furthermore, the emergence and/or re-emergence of life-threatening diseases are of supreme concern and come under the biosafety and biosecurity agenda

HIV primary care by the infectious disease physician in the United States - extending the continuum of care.

Models of care for people living with HIV (PLWH) have varied over time due to long term survival, development of HIV-associated non-AIDS conditions, and HIV specific primary care guidelines that differ from those of the general population. The objectives of this study are to assess how often infectious disease (ID) physicians provide primary care for PLWH, assess their practice patterns and barriers in the provision of primary care. We used a 6-item survey electronically distributed to ID physician members of Emerging Infections Network (EIN). Of the 1248 active EIN members, 644 (52%) responde

Consequences of captivity: health effects of far East imprisonment in World War II.

Though medical consequences of war attract attention, the health consequences of the prisoner-of-war (POW) experience are poorly researched and appreciated. The imprisonment of Allied military personnel by the Japanese during the World War II provides an especially dramatic POW scenario in terms of deprivation, malnutrition and exposure to tropical diseases. Though predominantly British, these POWs also included troops from Australia, Holland and North America. Imprisonment took place in various locations in Southeast Asia and the Far East for a 3.5-year period between 1942 and 1945. Nutrition

The prevalence and risk of immune restoration disease in HIV-infected patients treated with highly active antiretroviral therapy.

BACKGROUND: It is becoming increasingly clear that, during successful highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), a proportion of treated patients develop opportunistic infections (OIs), referred to in this setting as immune restoration disease (IRD). We examined the risk of developing IRD in HAART-treated HIV-infected patients. METHODS: A retrospective study of a cohort including all 389 patients treated with HAART between 1 January 1998 and 31 May 2004 in our HIV unit was performed to evaluate the occurrence of and risk factors for IRD during HAART. Baseline and follow-up values of CD4 T-

Emerging Role of Circular RNAs as Potential Biomarkers for the Diagnosis of Human Diseases.

In the eukaryotic transcriptome, the evolutionary conserved circular RNAs naturally occur from the family of noncoding RNAs. Circular RNAs possess a unique feature to interact with nucleic acids and ribonucleoproteins and are establishing themselves as an obligatory composition for the regulatory messages which are encoded by the genome. The back-splicing mechanism leads to the formation of circularized RNA, and because of this they become resistant to exonuclease-mediated degradation. The differential and aberrant expression of circular RNAs can be detected with the help of various profiling
