Reduced Performance Due to Adenoviral Gizzard Erosion in 16-Day-Old Commercial Broiler Chickens in Iran, Confirmed Experimentally.

Adenoviral gizzard erosion (AGE) in broilers is an emerging infectious disease with negative impact on flock productivity. Despite of known primary etiological role of fowl adenovirus serotype 1 (FAdV-1) in AGE, there are a limited number of field reports worldwide, possibly because the disease is less noticeable and clinically difficult to assess. The present study documents an outbreak of AGE in 16-day-old broiler chickens on a farm in the north of Iran and the reproduction of the disease in an experimental setting. In the field, a sudden onset of mortality was noticed in affected broilers r

Acute and chronic toxicity of 2,4-D and fipronil formulations (individually and in mixture) to the Neotropical cladoceran Ceriodaphnia silvestrii.

Brazil is the largest producer of sugarcane and the world's top pesticide market. Therefore, environmental consequences are of concern. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the acute and chronic toxicity of pesticide formulations largely used in sugarcane crops: the herbicide DMA® 806 BR (a.i. 2,4-D) and the insecticide Regent® 800 WG (a.i. fipronil), isolated and in mixture, to the Neotropical cladoceran Ceriodaphnia silvestrii. Toxicity tests with the individual formulated products indicated 48h-EC50 values of 169 ± 18 mg a.i./L for 2,4-D and 3.9 ± 0.50 µg a.i./L for fipronil. In the

Rapid aggregative and reproductive responses of weevils to masting of North American oaks counteract predator satiation.

The predator satiation hypothesis posits that masting helps plants escape seed predation through starvation of predators in lean years, followed by satiation of predators in mast years. Importantly, successful satiation requires sufficiently delayed bottom-up effects of seed availability on seed consumers. However, some seed consumers may be capable of quick aggregative and reproductive responses to masting, which may jeopardize positive density dependence of seed survival. We used a 17-yr data set on seed production and insect (Curculio weevils) infestation of three North American oaks specie

Heterologous Expression of AtBBX21 Enhances the Rate of Photosynthesis and Alleviates Photoinhibition in Solanumtuberosum.

B-box (BBX) proteins are zinc-finger transcription factors containing one or two B-box motifs. BBX proteins act as key factors in the networks regulating growth and development. The relevance of BBX21 to light and abscisic acid signaling in seedling development is well established; however, its importance in adult plant development and agronomic species is poorly understood. Therefore, we studied the effect of heterologous expression of Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) BBX21 in potato (Solanum tuberosum) var Spunta. Three independent AtBBX21-expressing lines and the wild-type control were cu

Molecular diversity and multifarious plant growth promoting attributes of Bacilli associated with wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) rhizosphere from six diverse agro-ecological zones of India.

The diversity of culturable Bacilli was investigated in six wheat cultivating agro-ecological zones of India viz: northern hills, north western plains, north eastern plains, central, peninsular, and southern hills. These agro-ecological regions are based on the climatic conditions such as pH, salinity, drought, and temperature. A total of 395 Bacilli were isolated by heat enrichment and different growth media. Amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis using three restriction enzymes AluI, MspI, and HaeIII led to the clustering of these isolates into 19-27 clusters in the different zones at

Extracellular lipids of Camelina sativa: characterization of chloroform-extractable waxes from aerial and subterranean surfaces.

Camelina sativa (L.) Crantz is an emerging low input, stress tolerant crop with seed oil composition suitable for biofuel and bioproduct production. The chemical compositions and ultrastructural features of surface waxes from C. sativa aerial cuticles, seeds, and roots were analyzed using gas chromatography and microscopy. Alkanes, primary fatty alcohols, and free fatty acids were common components of all analyzed organs. A particular feature of leaf waxes was the presence of alkyl esters of long-chain fatty acids and very long-chain fatty alcohols, ranging from C38 to C50 and dominated by C42

In vitro studies of cellular and molecular developmental toxicity of adjuvants, herbicides, and fungicides commonly used in Red River Valley, Minnesota.

Recent epidemiologic studies showed increased frequency of birth defects in pesticide applicators and general population of the Red River Valley, Minnesota. These studies further indicated that this crop growing area used more chlorophenoxy herbicides and fungicides than elsewhere in Minnesota. Based on frequency of use and known biology, certain herbicides, pesticide additives, fungicides, and mycotoxins are suspect agents. To define whether these agents affect developmental endpoints in vitro, 16 selected agrochemicals were examined using the MCF-7 breast cancer cell line. In the flow cytome

Exogenous kinetin mitigates arsenic-induced oxidative stress by regulating ROS homeostasis and antioxidant defense in Ocimum basilicum L.

Integrated physiological, biochemical, histochemical, and structural analyses demonstrated that exogenous kinetin effectively alleviates arsenic-induced oxidative damage in Ocimum basilicum. Arsenic (As) contamination poses a severe threat to crop productivity by inducing oxidative stress through excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation. This study aimed to investigate the protective role of exogenous kinetin (KN), a synthetic cytokinin, in alleviating As-induced phytotoxicity in Ocimum basilicum L. through a comprehensive morphological, physiological, biochemical, histochemical, a

Nature-based solutions for enhancing CO2 sequestration and rehabilitating degraded lands through silvo-aromatic system and soil moisture conservation techniques.

Ravine land is one of the most degraded lands which results from extreme soil erosion. The soil fertility in these lands is low which affects plant survival, making the cultivation of arable crops impractical. However, with the use of soil moisture conservation (SMC) techniques, the productivity of these areas can be significantly enhanced. The present study aims to rehabilitate the ravine area by combining aromatic grass, tree planting, and SMC techniques. We hypothesized that silvo-aromatic system combined with SMC measures will lead to significant improvements in CO2-sequestration, soil org

Revolution or trap? Long-term diffusion of bioplastics in China: Economic losses, health benefits, and policy pathways based on a multi-module CGE-LCA model.

Bioplastics, which are made from crops and are biodegradable, are considered a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based plastics for reducing emissions and pollution. However, there is currently insufficient systematic assessment of the long-term economic, health, and environmental impacts, as well as the long-term policy effects and consumer diffusion patterns, of large-scale promotion of bioplastics in different regions of China. To address this gap, this study developed a multi-regional dynamic simulation framework integrating a recursive dynamic computable general equilibrium model (CGE)

Oats in healthy gluten-free and regular diets: A perspective.

During the 20th century, the economic position of oats (Avena sativa L.) decreased strongly in favour of higher yielding crops including winter wheat and maize. Presently, oat represents only ~1.3% of the total world grain production, and its production system is fragmented. Nonetheless, current interest is growing because of recent knowledge on its potential benefits in food, feed and agriculture. This perspective will serve as a further impetus, with special focus on the recently valued advantages of oats in human food and health. Five approved European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) health cl

A winter wheat GWAS identifies a large effect FHB resistance haplotype using diverse lines from U.S. breeding programs.

Fusarium head blight (FHB), primarily caused by Fusarium graminearum in North America, is a devastating disease in bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). The characteristic mycotoxin production and reduced grain fill cause several million metric tons of annual crop and economic losses. Exome capture-generated single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from 269 winter wheat breeding lines and cultivars representing most U.S. wheat-growing regions, were associated with FHB resistance using a genome-wide association study (GWAS). The panel was evaluated for FHB symptoms in the Rocky Ford FHB nursery (Ma

Effects of a three-year maize-soybean rotation on soil bacterial diversity and fumonisin-producing Fusarium spp. inoculum potential.

Maize-soybean succession dominates grain production in tropical Brazil, and rotation is often recommended to improve soil health. However, few field studies have followed both soil bacterial diversity and fumonisin-producing pathogens over several seasons in tropical no-till systems. We compared continuous maize, continuous soybean and maize-soybean rotation for three seasons (2016-2017 to 2018-2019). In a fourth season (2019-2020), maize was grown in all plots to test legacy effects. Bacterial communities were profiled by 16 S rRNA (V3-V4) amplicon sequencing. The fum1 gene of fumonisin-produ

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi reshape carbon-nitrogen balance and metabolism in nitrogen-limited escarole (Cichorium endivia L.).

Nitrogen nutrition remains a major challenge for sustainable crop production, particularly under the current need to reduce fertilizer inputs. This study evaluated whether inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) improves the physiological, nutritional, and metabolic performance of escarole (Cichorium endivia L.) plants under nitrogen-limited conditions. Escarole plants were grown under two nitrogen regimes, full nitrogen supply and 25% of the optimal nitrogen concentration, either inoculated or non-inoculated with Rhizophagus irregularis. Plant growth, mineral composition, soluble …

Multi-environment evaluations reveal that peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) quality traits are equally determined by genotype and environment.

BACKGROUND: Peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) is a widely planted cash and oil crop, and regional and meteorological factors, as the most critical environmental factors, play crucial roles in peanut kernel quality traits. To explore the relationship between peanut quality traits and environmental factors, this study dissected the quality traits and the genotype-by-environment interaction factors using seven varieties across multiple environments. METHODS: Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to partition the variance of kernel quality traits, correlation analysis was used to examine the associati

Understanding rural food environments and malnutrition-related mortality disparities: A typological approach from Mexico.

Rural food environments (RFEs) are increasingly recognized as critical determinants of nutrition and health inequities, yet remain understudied in low- and middle-income countries. Despite growing attention to food environments, most frameworks have been developed in urban contexts, overlooking the structural and functional diversity of rural territories. Mexico offers a compelling case in which diverse agricultural landscapes and food systems intersect with rising burdens of malnutrition-related diseases. This study proposes a typology of RFEs and examines their association with population-le
