Infantile flexural seborrhoeic dermatitis. Neither biotin nor essential fatty acid deficiency.

The allegedly beneficial effect of biotin in the treatment of infantile 'flexural' seborrhoeic dermatitis was evaluated in a double-blind controlled study. No beneficial effect could be confirmed, and it is therefore unlikely that this disease is caused by biotin deficiency. Nor could this scaly dermatitis be ascribed to an essential fatty acid deficiency. Serum and adipose tissue fatty acids resembled each other and reflected the fatty acid composition of the diet.

Effect of "aminopterin" on epithelial tissues.

The folic acid antagonist, 4-aminopteroyl glutamic acid ("aminopterin"), is a potent inhibitor of growth and of connective tissue proliferation. The present study indicates that the suppressive effects of "aminopterin" on epithelial structures are more striking than on connective tissue, as revealed by observation of interference with wound healing and epithelization, atrophy and ulceration of mucosa, alopecia, and prompt suppressive effects in such dermatologic disorders as psoriasis and chronic indurative dermatoses. "Aminopterin" was administered orally in daily doses of 1.5 to 2.0 mg. to t

Synergistic antifungal activity and mechanism of piroctone olamine and sorbitan caprylate against Malassezia restricta.

AIMS: Malassezia restricta is a lipid-dependent opportunistic pathogen that is associated with various skin disorders including seborrheic dermatitis, dandruff, and tinea versicolor. This study aimed to investigate the antifungal activity and mechanism of piroctone olamine (OCT) and sorbitan caprylate (SC) in combination against M. restricta. METHODS AND RESULTS: The combination of 3.125 μg ml-1 OCT and 0.39 μg ml-1 SC effectively inhibited the growth of M. restricta. Microscopic observation of the fungal morphology, propidium iodide staining assay, and content leakage test indicate that the

Not Everything Is Allergic: Skin Sometimes Tells a Different Story at the Immunology and Allergy Clinics.

INTRODUCTION: Patients frequently present to allergy and immunology clinics with cutaneous complaints attributed to self-perceived allergic conditions; however, many have non-allergic dermatologic diseases. We aimed to evaluate the demographic and clinical characteristics of non-allergic patients with dermatologic complaints. METHODS: In this prospective study, patients presenting between June 1 and December 31, 2025, who received a non-allergic dermatologic diagnosis were included. Initial assessments were conducted in the immunology and allergy clinic, with dermatology consultation when nee

Genetically predicted levels of circulating cytokines and the risk of six immune skin diseases: a two-sample Mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: Circulating cytokines play a crucial role in the onset and progression of immune skin diseases. However, the causal relationships and the direction of causal effects require further investigation. METHODS: Two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses were conducted to assess the causal relationships between 41 circulating cytokines and six immune skin diseases including alopecia areata, chloasma, hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), lichen planus (LP), seborrheic dermatitis, and urticaria, using summary statistics from genome-wide association studies. Reverse MR analyses was perform

Risk Factors for Chalazion Diagnosis and Subsequent Surgical Excision.

PURPOSE: To identify factors associated with chalazion diagnosis and surgical excision. METHODS: Patients with an incident chalazion diagnosis from 2002 to 2019 were compared 1:5 with matched controls. Multivariable logistic regression was performed to identify variables associated with diagnosis and surgical excision. RESULTS: Chalazion patients (n = 134,959) and controls (678,160) were analyzed. Risk factors for diagnosis included female sex, non-white race, northeast location, conditions affecting periocular skin and tear film (blepharitis, meibomian gland dysfunction, rosacea, pterygium)

Sorafenib-related generalized eruptive keratoacanthomas (Grzybowski syndrome): a case report.

BACKGROUND: Sorafenib is an oral multikinase inhibitor that targets Raf serine/threonine receptor tyrosine kinases and inhibits tumor cell growth and angiogenesis. Cutaneous toxicities of sorafenib are common, including cutaneous eruptions (such as truncal erythema and seborrheic-dermatitis-like changes) and hand-foot syndrome. Keratoacanthomas and squamous cell carcinomas have been reported previously; however, we report a case of multiple eruptive keratoacanthomas in the form of Grzybowski syndrome after initiation of sorafenib. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 63-year-old Caucasian male who

Eyelid dermatitis in patients referred for patch testing: Retrospective analysis of North American Contact Dermatitis Group data, 1994-2016.

BACKGROUND: Eyelid dermatitis is a common dermatologic complaint. OBJECTIVE: To characterize patients with eyelid dermatitis. METHODS: Retrospective analysis (1994-2016) of North American Contact Dermatitis Group data. RESULTS: Of 50,795 patients, 2332 (4.6%) had eyelid dermatitis only, whereas 1623 (3.2%) also had dermatitis of the eyelids and head or neck. Compared with patients without eyelid involvement (n = 26,130), groups with eyelid dermatitis only and dermatitis of the eyelid and head or neck were significantly more likely to be female, white, and older than 40 years, and to have a

[Recommendations for local therapy of common dermatoses in children].

Recommendations for topical dermatologic therapy of the most common skin diseases in infancy and childhood are given with tabular summaries. They are concerned with diaper dermatitis, seborrhoeic dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, scabies and pediculosis. Special attention is given to topical steroid therapy in seborrhoeic and atopic dermatitis and to the possible neurotoxic side-effects of Lindan, the most effective substance against scabies and pediculosis.
