The bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) epidemic in cows, and the recent BSE-linked human infections, present new public health problems. More rigorous measures are needed to prevent additional transmissions. Tissue from established but undiagnosed human infections can contaminate medical supplies and instruments. We tested guanidine thiocyanate (GdnSCN) solutions and found them to be highly effective in disrupting the infectious agent, even in very complex tissues such as whole brain. It may be prudent now to use this reagent routinely in surgical and other relevant settings.

After the initial description of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in Romania in late 1989, national AIDS case surveillance was established with a modified version of the World Health Organisation (WHO) clinical case definition. This modified case definition requires that AIDS cases have both clinical and serological evidence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Before December, 1989, Romania had reported 13 AIDS cases to WHO. By Dec 31, 1990, 1168 AIDS cases were reported to Romania's Ministry of Health, of which 1094 (93.7%) occurred in children less than 13 years of age

Just like other tropical countries, Congo is not free from Tetanus. Over a period of 11 months the authors treated 44 cases where tetanus entered by various means. The removal of a chick-flea (Tunga penetrans) leaves a hole through which the tetanus spore can penetrate: this accounted for 25% of the cases (11 cases). In the group under observation, no death attributable to tetanus occurred.

Ice machines can harbor water-related organisms, and the use of ice or tap water for clinical care activities has been associated with infections in health care settings. In recent years, vancomycin-resistant enterococci, especially Enterococcus faecium has emerged as an important nososcomial pathogen and represents a serious threat to patients with impaired host defences. We report infection with vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium in a 3-year-old child with patent ductus arteriosus.
