INTRODUCTION: Anaemia can compromise muscle and organ function. Related iron and vitamin body stores have seldom been assessed in patients with peripheral arterial disease.
REPORT: We retrospectively analysed basal prevalence of anaemia, iron, B(12)-vitamin and folic acid deficits in 420 patients with claudication and 204 patients with critical limb ischaemia (CLI). The prevalence of the evaluated parameters was 9.8%, 6.7%, 6.7% and 2.9% among patients with claudication but 49.5%, 31.9%, 15.7% and 6.4% among CLI patients, respectively (p < 0.05 for all).
DISCUSSION: Anaemia, iron and vitamin

A series of 322 patients presenting with non-ulcerative conditions of the oral mucosa was examined for haematological abnormalities. The series was divided into 5 major groups--lichen planus (103 patients), candidiasis (50), leukoplakia (30), stomatitis or glossitis (66), and a miscellaneous group (73). The prevalence of anaemia, and deficiences in iron, folate and vitamin B12 in each group were compared with that found in 100 controls. The prevalence of anaemia in the series as a whole was not significantly increased, but the prevalences of sideropenia (14.0%), folate deficiency (4.7%) and vi

Vitamin B12 deficiency is a significant public health problem globally. Although it is a well-known cause of macrocytic anaemia and in advanced cases, pancytopenia, there remains a relative paucity of cases reported in pregnancy. It is associated with an increased risk of pregnancy complications and adverse birth outcomes such as neural tube defects, preterm birth, low birth weight, neurological sequelae and intrauterine death. It has a predilection for individuals aged >60 years. It has been implicated in a spectrum of neuropsychiatric disorders and it may also exert indirect cardiovascular e

While data exist on the prevalence and causes of anemia in defined groups of the elderly, information on palliative care patients is limited. Compared to actively treated oncology patients, for whom anemia treatment has demonstrated improved quality of life and symptom alleviation, studies of treatment outcomes in palliative care patients are limited. Knowledge of the extent and causes of anemia in palliative care patients is needed, as correction of anemia in these patients could potentially improve their physical, emotional, and cognitive functioning. In the present study, clinical data and

Homocysteine is a branch-point metabolite, the biological fate of which is linked to vitamin B12, reduced folates and vitamin B6. Various inborn defects in homocysteine metabolism, among which cystathionine beta-synthase deficiency is most common, lead to the clinical condition homocystinuria. A central feature of this clinical state is premature arteriosclerosis. These patients benefit from agents serving as cofactors in homocysteine metabolism which both reduce the homocysteine levels in plasma and the incidence of vascular episodes. Experimental data point to homocysteine as an arterioscler

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Our previous study found 139 gastric parietal cell antibody (GPCA)-positive oral lichen planus (OLP) patients (GPCA+OLP patients) in a group of 588 OLP patients. This study evaluated whether higher-titer (serum GPCA titer ≥160) GPCA+OLP patients had greater frequencies of macrocytosis, anemia, serum iron and vitamin B12 deficiencies, and hyperhomocysteinemia than lower-titer (GPCA titer ≥80) GPCA+OLP patients or 588 healthy control subjects.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Complete blood count, serum iron, vitamin B12, folic acid, homocysteine, and GPCA levels in 53 higher-titer GP

INTRODUCTION: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) has adverse consequences on almost all body systems. The kidney does not function merely as an excretory organ, but participates in normal erythropoiesis, normal bone mineral deposition and blood pressure regulation.
REVIEW: Anemia is prevalent in CKD with known deleterious effects on the car diovascular system. It is mostly due to erythropoietin deficiency, inhibition of erythropoiesis by uremic solutes, and reduction in red blood cell life span. Other possible causes include iron, B12 or folic acid deficiency or blood loss. Dysfunction of the endog…

INTRODUCTION: Neural tube defects are the most common congenital anomalies of central nervous system. Their onset is at the embryonic age of 21 to 28 days. Periconceptional administration of folic acid may reduce the occurrence of neural tube defects up to 70%. Clinical features depend on localization of the defect and malformation of central nervous system, as well as on intensive multidisciplinary care in early stages of development. Open defects (meningomyelocele) present with more severe neurological deficiency early after birth. Closed defect manifestation occurs usually later in life wit

OBJECTIVES: We prospectively investigated the causes of anemia in patients with advanced congestive heart failure (CHF).
BACKGROUND: Anemia is common in patients with advanced CHF, and its etiology is generally considered to be multifactorial. However, despite its importance, precise information is lacking regarding the prevalence of putative etiologic factors.
METHODS: Patients who were hospitalized for decompensated advanced CHF and who were stabilized after their initial treatment underwent evaluation of "clinically significant" anemia, defined as a hemoglobin content <12 g/dl for men and

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Lacto-vegetarians (LVs) tend to have vitamin B12 deficiency (B12D). This study assessed whether 140 female LVs, including 16 B12D/LVs and 124 non-B12D/LVs, had significantly higher frequencies of microcytosis, macrocytosis, and of blood hemoglobin (Hb), red blood cell (RBC), and serum vitamin B12 deficiencies than 140 healthy control subjects (HCSs).
METHODS: The complete blood count and serum vitamin B12 level in 140 female LVs and 140 female HCSs were measured and compared.
RESULTS: We found that 8.6%, 4.3%, 22.9%, 20.0%, and 11.4% of 140 LVs had microcytosis, macrocyto

Objective The SMILING (Sustainable Micronutrient Interventions to Control Deficiencies and Improve Nutritional Status and General Health in Asia) project aimed at creating awareness and improving policies around micronutrient deficiencies in five Southeast Asian countries (Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Indonesia). Results The project showed large gaps in recent data on micronutrient status in most of the five countries. By updating existing, or creating national food composition tables, the SMILING project enabled analyses of food consumption in women of reproductive age and young chil

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The importance of epigenetic changes in etiology and pathogenesis of disease has been increasingly recognized. However, the role of epigenetic alterations in the genesis of hepatic steatosis and cause of individual susceptibilities to this pathological state are largely unknown.
METHODS: Male inbred C57BL/6J and DBA/2J mice were fed a lipogenic methyl-deficient diet (MDD) that causes liver injury similar to human non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) for 6, 12, or 18 weeks, and the status of global and repetitive elements cytosine methylation, histone modifications, and expres

Vitamin B12 deficiency is associated with problems in cognition, mood, psychosis, and less commonly, anxiety. Folate deficiency primarily is associated with problems in mood. Patients who have sickle cell disease, a disease of chronic pain, experience difficulties with depression, anxiety, stigma, and are at risk for substance abuse and dependence. Patients with hemophilia have benefited from advances in treatment; however, their morbidity and mortality were compounded in those who received blood products contaminated with HIV, or hepatitis B and C. Psychiatrists who practice psychosomatic med

Bone marrow cells from 15 patients with normal deoxyuridine (dU) suppression test results, 3 healthy subjects, and 11 patients with megaloblastic anemia caused by vitamin B12 or folate deficiency were examined for misincorporation of uracil into DNA. Cells were incubated with [5-3H] uridine for 2 hours and their DNA extracted. The DNA was hydrolyzed to deoxyribonucleosides with DNase 1, phosphodiesterase and alkaline phosphatase, and any dU present was separated from other deoxyribonucleosides by Aminex A6 chromatography. The quantity of dU/mg DNA and the radioactivity in the dU peak/mg DNA we

Vitamin B12 deficiency in the elderly is a common disorder associated with an increased morbidity if it goes undetected, as often happens. Its diagnosis can be enhanced if the clinician recognizes the associated clinical features of nonspecific symptoms, glossitis, and dermatologic and neuropsychiatric abnormalities, and realizes the limitations of various tests (serum B12 assay, parietal cell and intrinsic factor antibody, mean corpuscular volume, and Schilling tests). Available data indicate it is sufficient to prescribe replacement B12 injections three or four times a year.

A technique has been developed for accurately assaying serum and urine (57)Co cyanocobalamin during the conventional Schilling test. Serum and urine radioactivity in a large number of patients has been correlated and the precise normal limits have been determined by statistical analysis. The implications of this for investigating conditions other than pernicious anaemia and the malabsorption syndromes are stressed.
