Death related to nasal surgery: case report with review of therapy-related deaths.

The investigation of deaths that are suspected to be related to medical therapy present several challenges for the forensic pathologist. In all such cases, it is important for the pathologist to understand the therapy/procedure that may have played a role in death. As such, review of medical records and possible consultation with various medical specialists before autopsy can provide valuable information to ensure proper evaluation in any given case.Herein, we describe a rare death occurring as a complication of septoplasty, nasal polypectomy, and intranasal endoscopic ethmoidectomy, which are

Osteoplastic frontal sinus surgery with fat obliteration: technique and long-term results using magnetic resonance imaging in 82 operations.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the intraoperative and late complications of osteoplastic sinus surgery with fat obliteration with long-term magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) follow-up. METHODS: The operative records of all patients who underwent osteoplastic frontal sinus surgery with fat obliteration between January 1, 1986 and December 31, 1997 were reviewed and the postoperative clinical course and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans were analyzed if available. MRI analyses revealed that changes in the distribution of fatty and fibrous tissue, the development of necrosis or oil cysts, recurrence

Primary ciliary dyskinesia in the dog.

A disorder caused by congenital ciliary dysfunction occurs in dogs. Most of the clinical signs are directly or indirectly attributable to immotile or dyskinetic cilia and spermflagella. Due to severely impaired mucociliary clearance, a continuous mucoid nasal discharge and intermittent sneezing and coughing are typically observed during the neonatal period. Recurrent bacterial rhinosinusitis and bronchopneumonia usually start within a few weeks of birth. Hypoplastic nasal sinuses and atresia of the frontal sinuses are variable features of the disease that may be caused by neonatal colonization

Intracavernous Aneurysm Mimicking Tolosa-Hunt Syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Tolosa-Hunt syndrome (THS) is a disorder related to inflammation of cavernous sinus and superior orbital fissure that usually presents with ophthalmoplegia and oculomotor nerve palsies. The etiology of the syndrome is unknown and the diagnosis is set by exclusion of other clinical conditions that manifest in a similar way. Intracranial aneurysms, such as intracavernous ones, should be included in the differential diagnosis as they can compress cranial nerves leading to similar clinical presentation. CASE REPORT: We present a case of a 51-year-old woman who was referred to our cl

The "Crumple Zone" hypothesis: Association of frontal sinus volume and cerebral injury after craniofacial trauma.

PURPOSE: The paranasal sinuses are complex anatomical structures of unknown significance. One hypothesis theorizes that the sinuses, in the event of a traumatic injury, function as a crumple zone to distribute and absorb energy to protect the brain and other critical structures. The current study investigates the association between frontal sinus (FS) volume and the severity of cerebral insults following craniofacial trauma. METHODS: All patients with FS fracture admitted to a level 1 trauma center from 2011 to 2014 were retrospectively reviewed. FS volumes were measured from computed tomogra

Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) in unilateral sinus disease.

BACKGROUND: Unilateral sinus disease (USD) occurs in 23 % of all cases. It is believed that it is mainly associated with cancer development. Retrospective data from large rhinological centers show that the most common USD is chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), followed by mycosis, inverted papilloma and finally cancer, but only in a small percent of cases. THE AIM OF THE STUDY: The analysis of USD in the group of patients who underwent FESS at the secondary referral center. MATERIAL AND METHOD: The retrospective study of patients treated for USD in the Department of Otolaryngology in the Provincia

Computerized tomographic evaluation of supraorbital notches and foramen in patients with frontal migraine headaches and correlation with clinical symptoms.

PURPOSE: To correlate the location and size of supraorbital notches (SON) and foramen (SOF) with migraine headache symptoms in a migraine patient population. METHODS: A retrospective review was performed on consecutive patients who were candidates for frontal migraine surgery with available preoperative computed tomography (CT) images of the face/perinasal sinuses. The supraorbital anatomy from CT images was analyzed and correlated with presenting migraine headache symptoms. To assess for anatomic variations associated with migraine headaches, normative anatomic data were obtained by performi

Huge osteoma of the frontoethmoidal sinus with secondary brain abscess.

Osteomas of paranasal sinuses are usually asymptomatic. When enlarged, they may cause serious complications. We report a case of huge frontoethmoidal osteoma associated with brain abscess. If an osteoma associated with an intracerebral pathology is detected, it should be remembered that this could have been a complication of the osteoma and a detailed radiological examination should be performed to show the extent of the osteoma and to confirm any defect at the posterior wall of the sinus which may lead intracerebral complications. Such an osteoma should be operated after the abscess was resol

[Familial infantile cortical hyperostosis (Caffey's disease) with osteolytic lesions of the skull].

BACKGROUND: The parietal and frontal bones are rarely affected in infantile cortical hyperostosis. CASE REPORTS: Case n. 1: A 14-day-old boy developed a swelling of the left eyelid that extended to the face in a few days. It was tender and associated with fever. Laboratory findings were increased (RBC sedimentation rate and other signs of inflammation). CT scan of the sinuses, soft tissues and bones was normal, but at the age of 23 days minimal patches of rarefaction were seen on X-rays of the frontal bones. These lacunar areas gradually extended, with the inflammation persisted. A new CT sca
