Tertiary prevention of occupational skin diseases: Prevalence of allergic contact dermatitis and pattern of patch test results.

BACKGROUND: Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is one of the most common occupational skin diseases (OSDs). Its prevalence and the causative allergens differ between occupations. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the prevalence of ACD and the pattern of patch test results of patients taking part in a tertiary individual prevention programme (TIP) for OSD in Germany. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In a retrospective cohort study, the data of 3411 TIP patients patch tested between 2007 and 2016 were analysed. RESULTS: In 2687 (78.8%) patients, work-related skin disease was diagnosed, mostly hand dermatitis. The

Dermatological phenotype in Costello syndrome: consequences of Ras dysregulation in development.

BACKGROUND: The RASopathies are a class of human genetic syndromes caused by germline mutations in genes that encode protein components of the Ras/mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway. Costello syndrome (CS) is a RASopathy caused by mutations in the HRAS gene, a key regulator of signal transduction. OBJECTIVE: To quantify the specific cutaneous phenotype observed in 46 individuals with Costello syndrome with confirmed HRAS mutations. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study. Dermatological surveys were designed by the authors and were completed by parents of mutation-positive ind

Comparison of clobetasol propionate cream plus coal tar vs. topical psoralen and solar ultraviolet A therapy in palmoplantar psoriasis.

AIM: Palmoplantar psoriasis (PPP) produces significant morbidity and requires prompt treatment. Topical agents form the mainstay of therapy. We compared the efficacy and side-effect profile of a steroid/coal-tar combination with topical psoralen and solar ultraviolet A (PUVAsol) in PPP. METHODS: In total, 52 patients with PPP were randomized to receive either a combination of clobetasol propionate cream and coal tar daily (group 1) or topical PUVAsol on alternate days (group 2) for 16 weeks. Response was assessed as change in Psoriasis Activity and Severity Index (PASI) and Patient Global Ass

Combination of pulse therapy with terbinafine tablets and topical terbinafine cream for the treatment of dermatophyte onychomycosis: a pilot study.

We performed a pilot study to assess the safety and efficacy of pulse therapy with terbinafine tablets in 66 patients with dermatophyte onychomycosis. One pulse consisted of oral terbinafine tablets (500 mg/day) given for 1 week followed by a 3-week interval. Topical 1% terbinafine cream was applied daily. The number of pulses was determined by the extent of improvement in the affected nails and by the patient's requests, up to a maximum of six pulses. Efficacy was assessed based on both clinical and mycological examinations 1 year after treatment initiation. We observed a complete cure in 51

Long-term follow-up study of onychomycosis: cure rate and dropout rate with oral antifungal treatments.

The "complete cure" of onychomycosis requires long-term treatment with a systemic antifungal agent. Therefore, to properly assess the effects of an antifungal agent on onychomycosis requires a long follow-up. We have conducted a retrospective analysis of the patients treated with griseofulvin (GRF) from 1962 to 1992 and a clinical study to compare the long-term effect of GRF with that of a new oral antifungal agent, itraconazole (ITCZ), for patients who received treatment from 1992 to 1995. For the retrospective study, 281 patients who were microscopically diagnosed as having onychomycosis at

Erosio interdigitalis blastomycetica: A review of interdigital candidiasis.

Erosio interdigitalis blastomycetica (EIB) is a Candida infection affecting the third web space, between the third and fourth fingers. In 1915, Gougerot and Goncea first described saccharomycetic organisms isolated from the hands and feet. Johannes Fabry later named it in 1917, well before the genus Candida was introduced in 1923. EIB is most common among those who work with their hands frequently in water, such as dishwashers, launderers, bartenders, and homemakers. Clinical presentation most commonly consists of a central erythematous erosion surrounded by a rim of white macerated skin invol

[Hand eczema in children. Clinical and epidemiological study of the population referred to a tertiary hospital].

INTRODUCTION: Hand eczema is a frequent disease in adults. Diagnosing the cause of hand eczema is difficult due to different classifications. There is lack of evidence on hand eczema and its causes in children. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A total of 389 children between 0 and 16 years were identified between 1996 and 2016, from whom 42 (10.8%) with exclusively hand eczema were selected. In all cases a standard battery of epicutaneous patch tests was performed, as well as additional batteries depending on the clinical suspicion. The clinical and epidemiological features of these children were recorde

Allergic contact dermatitis caused by alkyl glucosides.

BACKGROUND: Alkyl glucosides were not expected to have a sensitizing potential at the concentrations to be used in finished consumer products; however, several contact allergy cases have been published. OBJECTIVES: To report on the patients suffering from allergic contact dermatitis caused by alkyl glucosides observed in our department. PATIENTS/METHODS: During a 19-year period (1993-2012), 11 842 patients with suspected contact dermatitis were patch tested with the European baseline series and, if relevant, also with other series and individual allergens. For this study, the clinical data a

Fragrance mix reactions and lime allergic contact dermatitis.

Allergic contact dermatitis due to citrus fruits is rare, but has been reported in cooks and bartenders. We report an interesting case of a bartender with hand dermatitis who had an allergic contact sensitivity to lime peel, fragrance mix I, and fragrance mix II. Most reported cases of citrus peel allergy are due to d-limonene, which makes up the majority of the peel oil. However, our patient had an allergic reaction to geraniol, which is a minor component of the peel oil and is present in fragrance mix I. It is important to consider a contact sensitivity to citrus in patients who have positiv
