Comparative evaluation of beetroot and Mangosteen Peel extracts as natural alternatives to malachite green in the Kato-Katz method.

BACKGROUND: The Kato-Katz technique is a widely recommended reference method for diagnosing soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections. However, the routine use of Malachite green raises concerns regarding toxicity and environmental impact. Plant-derived natural dyes present a potentially safer alternative, nonetheless, objective and reproducible assessments remain limited. AIMS: The objective of this study was to assess the viability of beetroot and mangosteen peel extracts as alternative staining agents to Malachite green in the Kato-Katz method by a combination of expert evaluation and qua

Spatial patterns and risk mapping of opisthorchiasis and soil-transmitted helminth infections in Thailand using Bayesian geostatistical models.

Opisthorchis viverrini and soil-transmitted helminths (STH) remain major public health challenges in Thailand due to their widespread distribution. This study aimed to map and predict the prevalence of O. viverrini and STH infections across Thailand and to identify key environmental, climatic, and socio-economic factors influencing their geographical distribution. Bayesian geostatistical logistic regression models were fitted to national survey data to estimate infection risk and generate high-resolution spatial predictions. Demographic (sex, age), environmental (land surface temperature, vege

Detection of protozoan and helminth parasites in concentrated wet mounts of stool using a deep convolutional neural network.

Comprehensive diagnosis of gastrointestinal parasites is largely reliant on traditional stool microscopy, despite gains in molecular diagnostics. Wet-mount examinations remain a significant challenge for traditional microscopy, digital microscopy, and artifical intelligence (AI). We developed and validated a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) model that provides highly sensitive detection and presumptive classification of enteric parasites. Twenty-seven different parasites were trained on a CNN model using a wide diversity of 4,049 unique parasite-positive specimens (determined by traditi

An artificial intelligence-based diagnosis system for the identification of helminth parasitic infections in mithun and allied bovines.

This study presents a novel deep learning approach addressing the critical shortage of veterinary expertise in India’s North Eastern Hill (NEH) region through automated identification of parasitic infections in livestock. We developed a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architecture capable of analyzing both standard and microscopic images to identify and classify 16 distinct parasitic species. The model comprises four convolutional layers (32, 64, 128, 256 filters) with ReLU activation and MaxPooling for efficient feature extraction, followed by Dense layers and a Softmax classifier. The mod

Investigating the role of soil-transmitted helminth infections in the development of leprosy in endemic regions.

BACKGROUND: India alone contributes nearly 54% of the global load of new cases of leprosy and 21% to global helminthic parasitic infection cases. Research studies have suggested that Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infection can regulate the host's immune response and make them susceptible to leprosy. This study aimed to investigate the association between helminth infection and leprosy. MATERIALS & METHODS: Stool samples (n=360) were collected from 96 patients and 264 household contacts (HHCs) from the endemic region in Purulia (West Bengal) and Champa (Chhattisgarh) India. Samples were exam

The impact of soil transmitted helminth on malaria clinical presentation and treatment outcome: A case control study among children in Bagamoyo district, coastal region of Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Parasitic infectious agents rarely occur in isolation. Epidemiological evidence is mostly lacking, and little is known on how the two common parasites Plasmodium and soil transmitted helminths (STH) interact. There are contradictory findings in different studies. Synergism, antagonism and neutral effect have been documented between Plasmodium and STH. This study investigated the impact of STH on clinical malaria presentation and treatment outcome. METHODS: A matched case control study with a semi longitudinal follow up according to World Health Organization (WHO) antimalarial surv

Squamata reptiles as a potential source of helminth infections when preyed on by companion animals.

BACKGROUND: Squamate reptiles cohabiting with companion animals may represent a source of helminth infections, especially through predation by dogs and cats with an outdoor lifestyle. METHODS: In order to assess the role of reptiles as intermediate/paratenic hosts of trophically transmitted helminths, synanthropic reptiles (n = 245) captured from different ecological settings (i.e., households, dog shelters, urban, peri-urban and rural areas or natural parks) of southern Italy were examined for endoparasites. Parasitic cysts (i.e., larval forms of acanthocephalans, cestodes and nematodes) and

Assessment of the potential prophylactic and therapeutic effects of kaempferol on experimental Trichinella spiralis infection.

Currently, no effective treatment is available for trichinellosis, a zoonotic parasitic disease caused by infection with the genus Trichinella. Kaempferol (KPF), a dietary flavonoid, has been documented to have anti-parasitic effects and various medicinal uses. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the efficacy of KPF in preventing and treating the intestinal and muscular phases of trichinellosis in mice compared with albendazole (ABZ). To achieve this, mice were divided into six groups: negative control; positive control; KPF prophylaxis; KPF treatment; ABZ treatment; and a combination of ABZ

Prevalence, intensity of infection and associated risk factors of soil-transmitted helminth infections among school children at Tachgayint woreda, Northcentral Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminths (STH) are one of the most common infections affecting underprivileged populations in low- and middle-income countries. Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, and hookworm are the three main species that infect people. School children are the most vulnerable groups for STH infections due to their practice of walking and playing barefoot, poor personal hygiene, and environmental sanitation. However, evidence is limited in the study area. So, this study aimed to assess the current prevalence, infection intensity, and associated risk factors of STHs among

Helminth species dependent effects on Th1 and Th17 cytokines in active tuberculosis patients and healthy community controls.

Despite that the impact of different helminth species is not well explored, the current dogma states that helminths affect the Th1/Th2 balance which in turn affects the risk of tuberculosis (TB) reactivation and severity of disease. We investigated the influence of helminth species on cytokine profiles including IL-17A in TB patients and healthy community controls (CCs). In total, 104 newly diagnosed pulmonary TB patients and 70 HIV negative and QuantiFERON negative CCs in Gondar, Ethiopia were included following helminth screening by stool microscopy. Plasma samples and ex vivo stimulation of

Intestinal helminth co-infection is an unrecognised risk factor for increased pneumococcal carriage density and invasive disease.

Infection with Streptococcus pneumoniae is the leading cause of death in children and burden of disease is greatest where helminth infections are also common. We investigated the impact of intestinal helminth co-infection on pneumococcal carriage; a risk factor for invasive disease. We used a mouse co-infection model and clinical data to assess the impact of co-infection on carriage density. Co-infection in mice was associated with increased pneumococcal carriage density and dissemination into lungs. Helminth-infected children also exhibited increased carriage density as compared to uninfected

Parasitism in Gambusia affinis: Fitness Effects in an Incipient Matrotroph.

Gambusia affinis (western mosquitofish) serves as a host for a variety of larval and adult parasites. Gambusia affinis is also an incipient matrotroph, exhibiting adjustments in post-fertilization provisioning to some offspring within a brood using recently acquired resources. Nutrient transfer to embryos is expected to limit the loss of embryo mass during development resulting in larger offspring. Since larger offspring are more likely to survive, maternal contributions are expected to increase fitness. The presence of parasites, particularly intestinal helminths, potentially reduces body con

Soil-transmitted helminths and schistosomiasis among pre-school age children in a rural setting of Busia County, Western Kenya: a cross-sectional study of prevalence, and associated exposures.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminths (STH) and schistosomiasis continue to cause serious health problems among affected communities. To ensure that infection transmission levels are reduced, repeated mass drug administration at regular intervals has been recommended by World Health Organization. Pre-school age children (PSAC) have been neglected both in terms of research activities and in control programmes in the past for reasons that they carry insignificant infection levels. The current study determined risk factors that contribute to differences in infection prevalence among enrolled and

Central nervous signs, blindness and cerebral vermicosis in free-ranging peregrine falcons (Falco peregrinus) associated with aberrant larval migrations.

Four free-ranging peregrine falcons (Falco peregrinus) were submitted with a history of unilateral or bilateral blindness and central nervous signs to a veterinary clinic in Germany. There were no indications of trauma or ocular disease. Likewise, other differential diagnoses for CNS signs were ruled out within the diagnostic process. The clinical diagnostic panel in live falcons included general examination, radiography, endoscopy, hematology, ophthalmoscopy and parasitological examination of the feces, blood gas analysis and blood chemistry as well as computed tomography, and magnetic resona

Neglected Tropical Diseases: The Potential Application of microRNAs for Monitoring NTDs in the Real World.

Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) are a common health problem and require an efficient campaign to be eradicated from tropical countries. Almost a million people die of NTDs every year in the world, and almost forty percent of the patients are under 20 years. Mass Drug Administration (MDA) is an effective tool for eradication of this health condition. However, a monitoring system is required to evaluate treatment-response and early detection of the re-emerging NTD. The relevance of current tests depends on good quality of the specimen. Thus, new molecular methods with high sensitivity and spe
