OBJECTIVE: In the present study, the diagnostic value of somatostatin receptor scintigraphy (SRS) was evaluated in the preoperative workup in patients with pancreatic duct cancers and islet cell tumors, as well as in the follow-up of these patients.

Most carcinoid primary tumors are small and do not cause symptoms until complications (e.g. intestinal obstruction) or symptoms and signs of the carcinoid syndrome occur. The coupling of hematologic data with radionuclide studies of the spleen has provided information as to the functioning of the organ in a variety of disease states. The major radionuclide studies have been presented in terms of the type of information derivable and the various conditions that can result in fairly similar image presentations. By utilizing the imaging results in conjunction with other available data, a more coherent view emerges of the role of the spleen.

PURPOSE: The therapeutic effect of directly labeled antibodies in solid tumors is limited, mainly due to the relatively low uptake of the radiolabeled antibody in tumors as compared with their blood level. In previous studies, we have shown that renal cell carcinoma (RCC) can be targeted very effectively with the (111)In-labeled bivalent peptide di-diethylenetriamminepentaacetic acid diDTPA-FKYK, after pretargeting the tumor with a bispecific antibody. In this study, we further developed this pretargeting approach for radioimmunotherapy of renal cell cancer.

UNLABELLED: Measurement of segmental colonic transit is important in the assessment of patients with severe constipation. 111In-diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA) has been established as the tracer of choice for these studies, but it is expensive and not readily available. 67Ga-citrate is an inexpensive tracer and when given orally is not absorbed from the bowel. PURPOSE: Chronic thrombocytopenia is uncommon in children and frequently thought to be secondary to chronic idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), which is considered an immune disorder. During a prolonged hospital stay, left hip pain developed in a woman with sickle cell disease and bilateral hip prostheses. In-111 labeled WBC scintigraphy supplemented by Tc-99m SC bone marrow imaging demonstrated abnormal WBC accumulation surrounding the left greater trochanter. Results of surgical exploration showed an abscess involving the pseudocapsule, trochanteric bursa, and periprosthetic cement column. Patterns of colonic transit were assessed by a simple radioisotopic technique using 3.7 MBq of orally administered [111In]DTPA in 16 control subjects and 37 patients with intractable constipation.
