Objective. Bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) is a non-invasive diagnostic tool to derive fluid volume compartments from frequency dependent voltage drops in alternating currents by extrapolating to the extracellular resistance (R0) and intracellular resistance (Ri). Here we tested whether a novel BIS device with reusable and adhesive single-use electrodes produces results which are (in various body positions) equivalent to an established system employing only single-use adhesive electrodes.Approach. Two BIS devices ('Cella' and the 'Body Composition Monitor' [BCM]) were compared using four dedic

Magnesium (Mg) is the second most frequent intracellular cation, having an important role in normal enzyme function and insulin secretion. Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is the most prevalent endocrinopathy in women of reproductive age and often associated with insulin resistance. Two systematic reviews and meta-analyses have been conducted to compare mean serum Mg levels between PCOS and control groups. Both studies detected unexplained heterogeneity among input studies and the two conclusions contradict each other, while approximately 1% of total body Mg is present in extracellular fluid

Researchers around the world have experienced the dual nature of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), 'tragically lethal in some people while surprisingly benign in others'. There have been congregating studies of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), a disease that mainly attacks the lungs but also has mystifying effects on the heart, kidneys and brain. Researchers are also gathering information to ascertain why people are dying of COVID-19, whether it is solely a respiratory disorder, a coagulation disorder or multi-organ failure. Alterations in laboratory parame

Meningitis caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa has lately become a prevalent cause of the central nervous system (CNS) infection. Bacterial invasion into the subarachnoid space prompts the releasing mechanism of chemokines and pro-inflammatory cytokines. The present study aimed to compare K. pneumoniae and P. aeruginosa meningitis concerning the memory, pro-inflammatory mediators and brain histopathological changes at different time intervals in adult Albino rats. The animals were sacrificed at three time intervals comprising 5, 10 and 15 days after meningitis induction.

Hemorrhagic shock/resuscitation (HS/R) is closely associated with overwhelming oxidative stress and systemic inflammation. As an effective activator of the nuclear factor-erythroid factor 2 related factor 2 (Nrf2) pathway, sulforaphane (SFN) exerts antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. We explored SFN's effects on alveolar macrophages (AMs), systemic inflammation, and pulmonary damage in an isolated murine HS/R model. Male C57/BL6 wild type and transgenic antioxidant response element (ARE)-luciferase (luc) mice (both n = 6 per group) were exposed to either pressure-controlled HS/R (mean a

In donkeys, the use of frozen-thawed sperm for artificial insemination (AI) leads to low fertility rates. Furthermore, donkey sperm produce a large amount of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and post-AI inflammation induces the formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETosis), which further generates many more ROS. These high ROS levels may induce lipid peroxidation in the sperm plasma membrane, thus affecting its integrity. Enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants, mainly found in the seminal plasma (SP), are responsible for maintaining the redox balance. However, this fluid is removed pri

We elucidated the anti-inflammatory mechanisms of IL-38 in allergic asthma. Human bronchial epithelial cells and eosinophils were cocultured upon stimulation with the viral RLR ligand poly (I:C)/LyoVec or infection-related cytokine TNF-α to induce expression of cytokines/chemokines/adhesion molecules. House dust mite (HDM)-induced allergic asthma and humanized allergic asthma NOD/SCID murine models were established to assess anti-inflammatory mechanisms in vivo. IL-38 significantly inhibited induced proinflammatory IL-6, IL-1β, CCL5, and CXCL10 production, and antiviral interferon-β and interc

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Newcastle disease virus (NDV) is an obligate intracellular parasite. Virus can only live on living cells. The embryonated chicken eggs (ECEs) are one of the growth media of virus that is a cheap, easy to do, and accurate for showing patterns of virus change in the host. Higher virus titers indicate the higher number of viruses and more virulent to infect host. This research aimed to investigate the effect of different level of NDV titer infection in ECEs on protein profile, embryonic length, mortality, and pathological change.

BACKGROUND: Few dehydration assessment measures provide accurate information; most are based on reference change values and very few are diagnostically accurate from a single observation or measure. Bioelectrical impedance may lack the precision to detect common forms of dehydration in healthy individuals. Limitations in bioimpedance may be addressed by a unique resistance-reactance (RXc)-score graph method, which transforms vector components into z scores for use with any impedance analyzer in any population.
OBJECTIVE: We tested whether the RXc-score graph method provides accurate single or

Extracellular adenosine triphosphate (ATP) regulates pancreatic duct function via P2Y and P2X receptors. It is well known that ATP is released from upstream pancreatic acinar cells. The ATP homeostasis in pancreatic ducts, which secrete bicarbonate-rich fluid, has not yet been examined. First, our aim was to reveal whether pancreatic duct cells release ATP locally and whether they enzymatically modify extracellular nucleotides/sides. Second, we wished to explore which physiological and pathophysiological factors may be important in these processes. Using a human pancreatic duct cell line, Capa

Workers exposed to aerosolized dust present in concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) are susceptible to inflammatory lung diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Extracts of dust collected from hog CAFOs [hog dust extract (HDE)] are potent stimulators of lung inflammatory responses in several model systems. The observation that HDE contains active proteases prompted the present study, which evaluated the role of CAFO dust proteases in lung inflammatory processes and tested whether protease-activated receptors (PARs) are involved in the signaling pathway for these even

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia pecorum is the causative agent of a number of acute diseases, but most often causes persistent, subclinical infection in ruminants, swine and birds. In this study, the genome sequences of three C. pecorum strains isolated from the faeces of a sheep with inapparent enteric infection (strain W73), from the synovial fluid of a sheep with polyarthritis (strain P787) and from a cervical swab taken from a cow with metritis (strain PV3056/3) were determined using Illumina/Solexa and Roche 454 genome sequencing.
RESULTS: Gene order and synteny was almost identical between C. pec

BACKGROUND: Macrophages expressing the pro-angiogenic transcription factor hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1alpha have been demonstrated in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in the synovial tissue. Aim of the present study was to investigate intracellular signal transduction regulation of pro-inflammatory HIF-1 alpha expression in macrophages to identify possible new intervention strategies. We investigated the effects of CaMKII-inhibitors amongst other kinase inhibitors, on HIF-1 alpha expression and downstream production of pro-angiogenic factors in macrophages.
METHODS: Differentiated THP-1 cells a

Pancreatic duct epithelium secretes a HCO(3)(-)-rich fluid by a mechanism dependent on cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) in the apical membrane. However, the exact role of CFTR remains unclear. One possibility is that the HCO(3)(-) permeability of CFTR provides a pathway for apical HCO(3)(-) efflux during maximal secretion. We have therefore attempted to measure electrodiffusive fluxes of HCO(3)(-) induced by changes in membrane potential across the apical membrane of interlobular ducts isolated from the guinea pig pancreas. This was done by recording the changes in in

Besides other physiological functions, adenosine-5'-triphosphate (ATP) is also a neurotransmitter that acts on purinergic receptors. In spite of the presence of purinergic receptors in forebrain areas involved with fluid-electrolyte balance, the effect of ATP on water intake has not been investigated. Therefore, we studied the effects of intracerebroventricular (icv) injections of ATP (100, 200 and 300 nmol/microL) alone or combined with DPCPX or PPADS (P1 and P2 purinergic antagonists, respectively, 25 nmol/microL) on water intake induced by water deprivation. In addition, the effect of icv A

CD4(+) and CD8(+) lymphocytes are mobilized in severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and the CD8(+) cytokine interleukin (IL)-16 is believed to be important in regulating the recruitment and activity of CD4(+) lymphocytes. In the current study, we examined whether tobacco smoke exerts an impact not only on IL-16 in the lower airways but also in CD4(+) or CD8(+) lymphocytes or in lymphoid tissue. The concentration of IL-16 protein was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in concentrated bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) collected from 33 smokers with chronic bro

Chemokines are small chemotactic molecules widely expressed throughout the central nervous system. A number of papers, during the past few years, have suggested that they have physiological functions in addition to their roles in neuroinflammatory diseases. In this context, the best evidence concerns the CXC-chemokine stromal cell-derived factor (SDF-1alpha or CXCL12) and its receptor CXCR4, whose signalling cascade is also implicated in the glutamate release process from astrocytes. Recently, astrocytic synaptic like microvesicles (SLMVs) that express vesicular glutamate transporters (VGLUTs)

Loss of tolerance to self-Ags in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), a prototypic autoimmune disease, is associated with dysregulation of T cell signaling, including the depletion of total levels of lymphocyte-specific protein kinase (Lck) from sphingolipid-cholesterol-enriched membrane microdomains (lipid rafts). Inhibitors of 3-hyroxy-3-methylgluteryl CoA reductase (statins) can modify the composition of lipid rafts, resulting in alteration of T cell signaling. In this study, we show that atorvastatin targets the distribution of signaling molecules in T cells from SLE patients,
