Sequential Prediction of Literacy Achievement for Specific Learning Disabilities Contrasting in Impaired Levels of Language in Grades 4 to 9.

Sequential regression was used to evaluate whether language-related working memory components uniquely predict reading and writing achievement beyond cognitive-linguistic translation for students in Grades 4 through 9 ( N = 103) with specific learning disabilities (SLDs) in subword handwriting (dysgraphia, n = 25), word reading and spelling (dyslexia, n = 60), or oral and written language (oral and written language learning disabilities, n = 18). That is, SLDs are defined on the basis of cascading level of language impairment (subword, word, and syntax/text). A five-block regression model sequ

Neuropsychiatric illness in the later years of life: summary and synthesis.

Dealing with neuropsychiatric illness in the later years of life is an immersion in complexity, born of heterogeneity in etiology, pathogene … gaining in speed and transformative potential (especially in generative Artificial Intelligence and Large Language Models). We seek to review and to encourage research that works toward practical wisdom-- what Aristotle termed "phronesis," for promotion of resilience and wellbeing in older adults both at the individual and population levels.

Evaluating LLMs' Potential to Identify Rare Patient Identifiers in Patient Health Records.

This study explores the utility of Large Language Models (LLMs) to support finding rare patient record details that could make a patient identifiable. Whilst most research has focused on what we call direct patient identifiers, indirect patient identifiers are not widely addressed. Our evaluation of patient records with mentions of indirect risks predicted by our LLM shows the potential to find these risks automatically. However, many risks highlighted were false positives or did not constitute identifiable risk. More work is needed to understand how we can harness the potential of LLMs as par…

From assistant to collaborator: A systematic review of the evolution of artificial intelligence in end-stage renal disease care and management.

We aimed to systematically analyze the historical evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) management and propose a developmental framework to map its progression from assistive tools to cognitive collaborators. A systematic review was conducted following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, identifying 100 eligible studies from PubMed, IEEE Xplore, and Web of Science. A three-stage analytical framework was applied to chart the technological evolution of AI in ESRD care: (1) rule-based assistive tools, (2) data-driven learning systems, and (3) emerging large language mode

Designing metaverse interaction systems for the Turkish language enhanced by fine-tuning and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG).

The metaverse refers to a digital environment that enables real-time user interaction through immersive technologies. Recent advancements in deep learning have particularly strengthened the capabilities of Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Large Language Models (LLMs). These developments have made human-computer interactions in the metaverse more natural and responsive, especially those involving users and non-Player Characters (NPCs). Many virtual platforms use LLMs-powered Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) to facilitate these interactions, but these often produce long, semantical…

LogosKG: Hardware-Optimized Scalable and Interpretable Knowledge Graph Retrieval.

Knowledge graphs (KGs) are increasingly integrated with large language models (LLMs) to provide structured, verifiable reasoning. A core operation in this integration is multi-hop retrieval, yet existing systems struggle to balance efficiency, scalability, and interpretability. We introduce LogosKG, a novel, hardware-aligned framework that enables scalable and interpretable k-hop retrieval on large KGs by building on symbolic KG formulations and executing traversal as hardware-efficient operations over decomposed subject, object, and relation representations. To scale to billion-edge graphs, L…

What it is said versus how it is said: comprehension of affective prosody in men with Klinefelter (47,XXY) syndrome.

Difficulties in social communication in individuals with Klinefelter syndrome (XXY chromosomal pattern) have largely been attributed to deficits in left hemisphere-mediated, language functions. This study examined the ability of XXY men to decode emotions from tone of voice, a pragmatic aspect of social communication that may be associated with right hemisphere functioning. A total of 26 XXY men and 20 men from the general population completed tasks involving emotion discrimination in speech, based on verbal content or tone of voice. The XXY group displayed relative difficulties in discriminat

Morphological units in the Arabic mental lexicon: evidence from an individual with deep dyslexia.

An ongoing debate in Arabic morphology concerns the nature of the smallest unit governing lexical organization and representation in this language. A standard model maintains that Arabic words are typically analyzable into a three-consonantal root morpheme carrying the core meaning of words and a prosodic template responsible mostly for grammatical information. This view has been largely supported by research in both theoretical linguistics and psycholinguistics. An alternative theory holds that the meaning of words in Arabic is, rather, encoded in the 'etymon' comprising two unordered consona

Enabling Quechua speech in humanoid social robots through fine-tuned neural TTS on the UBTech Walker Tienkung.

Humanoid social robots deployed in multilingual societies-particularly in indigenous communities-face a critical linguistic gap: their speech interfaces are predominantly designed for high-resource languages, excluding hundreds of millions of indigenous language speakers from equitable human-robot interaction. This study presents the first neural text-to-speech (TTS) system for Southern Quechua-the most extensive indigenous language family of the Americas, with more than ten million active speakers-deployed on a humanoid social robot. XTTS-v2, a multilingual neural TTS model, was fine-tuned on

Learning from human and chemical languages to predict biological function.

Understanding how molecular structure encodes biological function remains a grand challenge in drug discovery. Here, we present PubCheF-1, a deep learning model that predicts literature-derived biological function directly from chemical structure. PubCheF-1 was trained on a dataset linking molecules to labels derived from the scientific articles in which they appear, a strategy that connects disparate compounds through the language used to describe their functionalities. When tasked with identifying inhibitors of β-lactamases, including enzymes considered largely refractory to inhibition, PubC

A multi-task, multi-stage deep transfer learning model for early prediction of neurodevelopment in very preterm infants.

Survivors following very premature birth (i.e., ≤ 32 weeks gestational age) remain at high risk for neurodevelopmental impairments. Recent advances in deep learning techniques have made it possible to aid the early diagnosis and prognosis of neurodevelopmental deficits. Deep learning models typically require training on large datasets, and unfortunately, large neuroimaging datasets with clinical outcome annotations are typically limited, especially in neonates. Transfer learning represents an important step to solve the fundamental problem of insufficient training data in deep learning. In thi
