OBJECTIVE: A foetus with an echodense, microcystic lung lesion complicated by non-immune hydrops has a high mortality rate. Because of the limited treatment options available, laser ablation was offered in an attempt to reduce the size of the lesion and reduce hydrops fetalis.

Brachial plexus avulsion injury is one of the major complications after traffic, especially motorcycle accidents and machine injuries. Intractable pain and paralysis of the affected limbs are the major neurological deficits. During the past 18 years, we have encountered and treated more than 500 cases with brachial plexus avulsion injuries. PURPOSE: To study the ocular growth pattern in cryotherapy- and laser-treated prethreshold retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and its effect on scleral rigidity.
METHODS: In a prospective study, axial length, anterior chamber depth, and scleral rigidity were assessed in 12 eyes with no ROP, 12 eyes with spontaneously regressed ROP, 12 eyes with cryotherapy-treated prethreshold ROP, and 14 eyes with diode laser-treated prethreshold ROP at 36 weeks, 40 weeks, and 52 weeks postconceptional age.

We describe recurrent bilateral homocystinuria-related lens dislocation into the anterior chamber in a patient who had postoperative anterior staphyloma and secondary intractable aphakic glaucoma in only one eye. We discuss the possible causes of and treatment modalities for this complication.

PURPOSE: To analyze the clinical risk factors of the occurrence of retinal redetachment after expected silicone oil removal.
METHODS: Clinical data were studied retrospectively. UNLABELLED: Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia is a systemic autosomal dominant disorder involving blood vessels. The most common symptom is recurrent epistaxis. The treatments of these epistaxis are numerous but such treatments are often symptomatic and their effects are often not sustained. Some of these treatments may be complicated by visceral vascular malformations. The aim of this study is to propose a treatment plan for these patients with hierarchical organisation of therapeutic options taking into account of their previous therapy.

AIMS: To report the management and outcomes of sight-threatening diabetic retinopathy in pregnancy.

A trend towards an increase of malignant tumors observed during the recent 30-40 years, an unsatisfactory efficiency of enucleation as of a method applicable to treating such tumors and the designing of a modern technical basis stimulated a new trend in ophthalmooncology, i.e. organ-saving treatment. Outlined in the paper is an analysis of achievements of modern radiation treatment techniques and of local surgical extraction of tumors suggested both by Russian and foreign researchers; the methods are shown to be promising for future development.

A 9-year-old girl with refractory glaucoma with an anterior chamber intraocular lens underwent transscleral contact diode laser cyclophotocoagulation. Slit-lamp examination and ultrasound biomicroscopy revealed iris retraction and retroflexion at 2 weeks of follow-up. The probable cause of this complication is discussed.
