This paper aims to remind paediatric clinicians to suspect and confirm 'PFAPA' syndrome (Periodic Fever, Aphthous stomatitis, Pharyngitis and cervical Adenitis syndrome). We report two cases of PFAPA syndrome: a 3-year-old healthy boy with atopic rhinitis and a boy aged 8 years 5 months who simultaneously had lymphocytic vasculitis syndrome treated with immunosuppressive drugs. Both met Marshall's criteria. The literature regarding PFAPA syndrome was complied using a Medline search for articles published between 1963 and 1998 and we then reviewed the reference lists of the articles. The Medlin

Ivermectin is a safe and effective drug for onchocerciasis treatment. In certain individuals, however, therapy is accompanied by adverse reactions. The mechanisms underlying these reactions are not yet known. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether neutrophils are involved in the development of these adverse reactions. Elastase and lactoferrin, two markers for the release of neutrophil azurophilic and specific granule contents respectively, were measured by radioimmunoassays in plasma of onchocerciasis patients with varying degrees of side effects, as well as in control subject

The recruitment of polymorphonuclear leucocytes (PMNs) during the development of experimental pyogranulomas induced by Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis was followed in nine male lambs by scintigraphic examination. Autologous blood PMNs were labelled with 99m-technetium or 111-indium and were re-injected intravenously into infected lambs. The functional properties of the labelled cells were monitored 1) in vitro by measuring their phagocytic and bactericidal activity against C. pseudotuberculosis and their chemotaxis under agarose, and 2) in vivo by following scintigraphically their capacity

BACKGROUND: Sporobolomyces spp. is a yeast-like fungal organism commonly found in the environment. It has been sporadically reported in human medicine as a potential cause of dermatitis, lymphadenitis, meningitis, and endophthalmitis. In veterinary medicine, this fungus has only been described once in a dog affected with granulomatous meningoencephalitis.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 3-year-old Jagd Terrier was presented with crusted, erosive and ulcerative skin lesions primarily affecting the nose, but also the limbs and tail. A pyogranulomatous dermatitis was identified on skin histopathological se…

Caseous lymphadenitis is a contagious disease of chronic evolution affecting mainly sheep, goats, and other domestic animals. The virulence of its etiological agent, Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis, depends on the activity of enzymes, such as phospholipase D, and its waxy lipid mycolic acid layer, which induces cytotoxicity on the tissue cells of the host. Phospholipase D and mycolic acids contribute to inflammation, edema, and bacterium spread during abscess development. Here, we assessed the adhesion and internalization capacity of six isolates of C. pseudotuberculosis biovar ovis in a no…

Although the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine causes some complications such as lymphadenitis, cellulitis, and localized musculoskeletal diseases after administration, post-vaccine osteomyelitis is one of the rare complications in healthy children. Diagnosis is often delayed due to atypical presentation. An 11-month-old boy with a normal immune system, who was previously known to be completely healthy and had been vaccinated with BCG, was referred to our center due to a newly noticed firm swelling on the anterior chest wall. There was no evidence of previous tuberculosis infection or con…

Further imaging with a CECT confirmed mesenteric lymphadenitis without free peritoneal air and chronic constipation as a cause of symptoms. Expectant management resulted in gradual clinical improvement.
