Real-time counting of wheezing events from lung sounds using deep learning algorithms: Implications for disease prediction and early intervention.

This pioneering study aims to revolutionize self-symptom management and telemedicine-based remote monitoring through the development of a real-time wheeze counting algorithm. Leveraging a novel approach that includes the detailed labeling of one breathing cycle into three types: break, normal, and wheeze, this study not only identifies abnormal sounds within each breath but also captures comprehensive data on their location, duration, and relationships within entire respiratory cycles, including atypical patterns. This innovative strategy is based on a combination of a one-dimensional convolut

Prediction of the risk of cytopenia in hospitalized HIV/AIDS patients using machine learning methods based on electronic medical records.

BACKGROUND: Cytopenia is a frequent complication among HIV-infected patients who require hospitalization. It can have a negative impact on the treatment outcomes for these patients. However, by leveraging machine learning techniques and electronic medical records, a predictive model can be developed to evaluate the risk of cytopenia during hospitalization in HIV patients. Such a model is crucial for designing a more individualized and evidence-based treatment strategy for HIV patients. METHOD: The present study was conducted on HIV patients who were admitted to Guangxi Chest Hospital between

Fetal growth analysis from ultrasound videos based on different biometrics using optimal segmentation and hybrid classifier.

Birth defects and their associated deaths, high health and financial costs of maternal care and associated morbidity are major contributors to infant mortality. If permitted by law, prenatal diagnosis allows for intrauterine care, more complicated hospital deliveries, and termination of pregnancy. During pregnancy, a set of measurements is commonly used to monitor the fetal health, including fetal head circumference, crown-rump length, abdominal circumference, and femur length. Because of the intricate interactions between the biological tissues and the US waves mother and fetus, analyzing fet

Deep learning enables the differentiation between early and late stages of hip avascular necrosis.

OBJECTIVES: To develop a deep learning methodology that distinguishes early from late stages of avascular necrosis of the hip (AVN) to determine treatment decisions. METHODS: Three convolutional neural networks (CNNs) VGG-16, Inception ResnetV2, InceptionV3 were trained with transfer learning (ImageNet) and finetuned with a retrospectively collected cohort of (n = 104) MRI examinations of AVN patients, to differentiate between early (ARCO 1-2) and late (ARCO 3-4) stages. A consensus CNN ensemble decision was recorded as the agreement of at least two CNNs. CNN and ensemble performance was benc

Robust voltage-controlled transcutaneous energy transfer system for artificial anal sphincter.

BACKGROUND: The artificial anal sphincter (AAS) system has gained significant attention as a solution for treating fecal incontinence (FI). It relies on transcutaneous energy transfer (TET) as its primary energy source. However, changes in posture or biological tissue can cause misalignment of the coil, resulting in unstable power reception. Inadequate power affects charging efficiency, while excessive power leads to excessive heating at the receiver side. Consequently, achieving safe and constant voltage charging for the AAS becomes a complex challenge. METHODS: To maintain a consistent char

Development of a GCN-based model to predict in vitro phototoxicity from the chemical structure and HOMO-LUMO gap.

The interaction between sunlight and drugs can lead to phototoxicity in patients who have received such drugs. Phototoxicity assessment is a regulatory requirement globally and one of the main toxicity screening steps in the early stages of drug discovery. An in silico-in vitro approach has been utilized mainly for toxicology assessments at these stages. Although several quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models for phototoxicity have been developed, in silico technology to evaluate phototoxicity has not been well established. In this study, we attempted to develop an artifici

Convolutional neural network-based segmentation network applied to image recognition of angiodysplasias lesion under capsule endoscopy.

BACKGROUND: Small intestinal vascular malformations (angiodysplasias) are common causes of small intestinal bleeding. While capsule endoscopy has become the primary diagnostic method for angiodysplasia, manual reading of the entire gastrointestinal tract is time-consuming and requires a heavy workload, which affects the accuracy of diagnosis. AIM: To evaluate whether artificial intelligence can assist the diagnosis and increase the detection rate of angiodysplasias in the small intestine, achieve automatic disease detection, and shorten the capsule endoscopy (CE) reading time. METHODS: A con

HIV-1/HBV Coinfection Accurate Multitarget Prediction Using a Graph Neural Network-Based Ensemble Predicting Model.

HIV and HBV infection are both serious public health challenges. There are more than approximately 4 million patients coinfected with HIV and HBV worldwide, and approximately 5% to 15% of those infected with HIV are coinfected with HBV. Disease progression is more rapid in patients with coinfection, which significantly increases the likelihood of patients progressing from chronic hepatitis to cirrhosis, end-stage liver disease, and hepatocellular carcinoma. HIV treatment is complicated by drug interactions, antiretroviral (ARV) hepatotoxicity, and HBV-related immune reconditioning and inflamma

Evolution of cross-frequency coupling between endogenous oscillations over the temporal cortex in very premature neonates.

Temporal theta activity in coalescence with slow-wave (TTA-SW) is one of the first neurobiomarkers of the neurodevelopment of perisylvian networks in the electroencephalography (EEG). Dynamic changes in the microstructure and activity within neural networks are reflected in the EEG. Slow oscillation slope can reflect synaptic strength, and cross-frequency coupling (CFC), associated with several putative functions in adults, can reflect neural communication. Here, we investigated the evolution of CFC, in terms of SW theta phase-amplitude coupling (PAC), during the course of very early developme

Machine-learning-assisted spontaneous Raman spectroscopy classification and feature extraction for the diagnosis of human laryngeal cancer.

The early detection of laryngeal cancer significantly increases the survival rates, permits more conservative larynx sparing treatments, and reduces healthcare costs. A non-invasive optical form of biopsy for laryngeal carcinoma can increase the early detection rate, allow for more accurate monitoring of its recurrence, and improve intraoperative margin control. In this study, we evaluated a Raman spectroscopy system for the rapid intraoperative detection of human laryngeal carcinoma. The spectral analysis methods included principal component analysis (PCA), random forest (RF), and one-dimensi

A deep learning approach identifies new ECG features in congenital long QT syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Congenital long QT syndrome (LQTS) is a rare heart disease caused by various underlying mutations. Most general cardiologists do not routinely see patients with congenital LQTS and may not always recognize the accompanying ECG features. In addition, a proportion of disease carriers do not display obvious abnormalities on their ECG. Combined, this can cause underdiagnosing of this potentially life-threatening disease. METHODS: This study presents 1D convolutional neural network models trained to identify genotype positive LQTS patients from electrocardiogram as input. The deep lear

Detection of acute thoracic aortic dissection based on plain chest radiography and a residual neural network (Resnet).

Acute thoracic aortic dissection is a life-threatening disease, in which blood leaking from the damaged inner layer of the aorta causes dissection between the intimal and adventitial layers. The diagnosis of this disease is challenging. Chest x-rays are usually performed for initial screening or diagnosis, but the diagnostic accuracy of this method is not high. Recently, deep learning has been successfully applied in multiple medical image analysis tasks. In this paper, we attempt to increase the accuracy of diagnosis of acute thoracic aortic dissection based on chest x-rays by applying deep l

Long-Term Prediction of Blood Glucose Levels in Type 1 Diabetes Using a CNN-LSTM-Based Deep Neural Network.

BACKGROUND: In this work, we leverage state-of-the-art deep learning-based algorithms for blood glucose (BG) forecasting in people with type 1 diabetes. METHODS: We propose stacks of convolutional neural network and long short-term memory units to predict BG level for 30-, 60-, and 90-minute prediction horizon (PH), given historical glucose measurements, meal information, and insulin intakes. The evaluation was performed on two data sets, Replace-BG and DIAdvisor, representative of free-living conditions and in-hospital setting, respectively. RESULTS: For 90-minute PH, our model obtained mea

BO-ALLCNN: Bayesian-Based Optimized CNN for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Detection in Microscopic Blood Smear Images.

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is a deadly cancer characterized by aberrant accumulation of immature lymphocytes in the blood or bone marrow. Effective treatment of ALL is strongly associated with the early diagnosis of the disease. Current practice for initial ALL diagnosis is performed through manual evaluation of stained blood smear microscopy images, which is a time-consuming and error-prone process. Deep learning-based human-centric biomedical diagnosis has recently emerged as a powerful tool for assisting physicians in making medical decisions. Therefore, numerous computer-aided diag

An Augmented Artificial Intelligence Approach for Chronic Diseases Prediction.

Chronic diseases are increasing in prevalence and mortality worldwide. Early diagnosis has therefore become an important research area to enhance patient survival rates. Several research studies have reported classification approaches for specific disease prediction. In this paper, we propose a novel augmented artificial intelligence approach using an artificial neural network (ANN) with particle swarm optimization (PSO) to predict five prevalent chronic diseases including breast cancer, diabetes, heart attack, hepatitis, and kidney disease. Seven classification algorithms are compared to eval

Recurrent neural network models (CovRNN) for predicting outcomes of patients with COVID-19 on admission to hospital: model development and validation using electronic health record data.

BACKGROUND: Predicting outcomes of patients with COVID-19 at an early stage is crucial for optimised clinical care and resource management, especially during a pandemic. Although multiple machine learning models have been proposed to address this issue, because of their requirements for extensive data preprocessing and feature engineering, they have not been validated or implemented outside of their original study site. Therefore, we aimed to develop accurate and transferrable predictive models of outcomes on hospital admission for patients with COVID-19. METHODS: In this study, we developed
