The association of cannabis use and cardiac dysrhythmias: a systematic review.

Introduction: Cannabis use results in elevation of heart rate and blood pressure immediately after use, primarily due to sympathetic nervous system stimulation and parasympathetic nervous system inhibition. These effects may precipitate cardiac dysrhythmia. The objective of our study was to analyze systematically the pertinent medical literature regarding the putative association between cannabis use and cardiac dysrhythmia. Methods: We queried PubMed, Google Scholar, and OpenGrey, and reviewed results for relevance. We graded clinical trials, observational and retrospective studies, case serie…

The Role of Autonomic Function in Exercise-induced Endogenous Analgesia: A Case-control Study in Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Healthy People.

BACKGROUND: Patients with myalgic encephalomyelitis / chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) are unable to activate brain-orchestrated endogenous analgesia (or descending inhibition) in response to exercise. This physiological impairment is currently regarded as one factor explaining post-exertional malaise in these patients. Autonomic dysfunction is also a feature of ME/CFS. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to examine the role of the autonomic nervous system in exercise-induced analgesia in healthy people and those with ME/CFS, by studying the recovery of autonomic parameters following aerobic exercis

The relationship between resting heart rate and atherosclerosis risk factors.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The imbalance between sympathetic and parasympathetic activity is one of the important factors in pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). There is a relationship between sympathetic activity and some CVD risk factors. Also heart rate (HR) is related to the autonomic nervous system. We analysed the relation of mean resting HR to hypertension, diabetes, obesity and to some risk factors [body mass index (BMI), hsCRP, systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), LDL cholesterol (LDL), triglycerides (TG) and glucose (G)]. METHODS: 6977 men and 7792 wome

Multiple endocrine neoplasia, type 2b.

Multiple endocrine neoplasia, type 2b, is a disorder of unknown etiology with major involvement of the thyroid and adrenal glands, the autonomic nervous system, and connective tissue. It is transmissible with an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance, but since most cases are not familial, they presumably represent mutations. The thyroid gland exhibits bilateral medullary carcinoma, which is a metastasizing lethal neoplasm in the syndrome requiring total thyroidectomy once abnormal basal or stimulated concentrations of plasma immunoreactive calcitonin have been demonstrated. The adrenal med

Glycogen synthase kinase 3-specific inhibitor AR-A014418 decreases neuropathic pain in mice: evidence for the mechanisms of action.

The present study examined the antihyperalgesic effect of a specific inhibitor of Glycogen Synthase Kinase 3 (GSK3), AR-A014418, on the partial ligation of the sciatic nerve (PSNL), a neuropathic pain model in mice and investigated some mechanisms of action. AR-A014418 (0.01-1 mg/kg) administered by intraperitoneal route (i.p.) inhibited mechanical hyperalgesia. This action started 30 min after i.p. administration and remained significant up to 2 h. When administered daily for 5 days, AR-A014418 (0.3 mg/kg, i.p.) significantly reduced the mechanical hyperalgesia caused by PSNL. Intraperitoneal

Differences in parasympathetic vasodilator and salivary responses in the cat submandibular gland between lingual and chorda-lingual nerve stimulation.

Experimental activation of parasympathetic vasodilatation and salivation in the submandibular gland by a "pseudoreflex" method has definite advantages over other commonly used methods. However, it is unclear which stimulation sites allow for avoidance of direct activation of the parasympathetic efferents to this gland. We examined this question in heavily anesthetized (alpha-chloralose and urethane), artificially ventilated, cervically vago-sympathectomized cats, using the intersection of the chorda-lingual nerve and the submandibular gland duct ("the intersection") as our reference point. Parasympathetic modulation of amylase secretion by IFN gamma in murine submandibular glands.

IFN gamma is a pleiotropic cytokine that exerts immunologic and non-immunologic functions. We show here that at low doses (10 U/ml), it stimulates amylase secretion in murine submandibular glands (SMG) "via" muscarinic receptor activation, comparable to that produced by the muscarinic agonist carbachol. Both effects are blocked by atropine. NG-monomethyl-L-arginine (L-NMMA) and EGTA inhibited the cytokine effect on amylase secretion, involving the participation of a calcium-dependent isoform of nitric oxide synthase (NOS). We confirm NOS activation because IFN gamma stimulates nitrite producti

Parasympathetic reflex vasodilatation in rat submandibular gland.

The present study was designed to investigate 1) whether parasympathetic reflex vasodilatation occurs in the submandibular gland (SMG) in deeply urethan-anesthetized, cervically vagotomized, and sympathectomized rats when the central cut end of the lingual nerve (LN) is electrically stimulated and 2) to what extent the neural mechanisms underlying such responses are the same as those involved in the response to direct stimulation of the chorda-LN (CLN). Stimulation of each nerve separately elicited a marked blood flow increase in SMG. Section of the chorda tympani abolished the SMG blood flow

Lipopolysaccharide enhances neurogenic plasma exudation in guinea-pig airways.

1. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is implicated in many pulmonary and airway inflammatory diseases. Tachykinins released from nerve endings increase vascular permeability. In this study, we have assessed the enhancement by LPS of tachykinin-mediated plasma exudation in guinea-pig airways, and examined the role of oxidants as well as leukocyte adherence. 2. LPS (100 microg kg(-1), i.v.) was administered 0-3 h before bilateral electrical stimulation of the cervical vagus nerves in animals anaesthetized with urethane and ventilated. Vagal stimulation increased vascular permeability in the airways. LPS

Presynaptic muscarinic M1 and M2 receptor modulation of auriculotemporal nerve transmission in the rat.

Parotid secretory and vascular responses to electrical stimulation of the parasympathetic innervation were measured in anaesthetized rats. Stimulation was performed at 1, 10 and 40 Hz. Atropine (1.5 micromol/kg i.v.) almost abolished the secretion to stimulation of peptide depleted nerves at 40 Hz, thus confirming the existence of a pure cholinergic response. Atropine also reduced secretion by 74% during stimulation of non-depleted nerves at the same frequency. Selective blockade by the muscarinic M1 receptor antagonist pirenzepine and by the muscarinic M2 receptor antagonist methoctramine was

Interleukin-4 modulates cholinergic neural control of mouse small intestinal longitudinal muscle.

Interleukin-4 contributes to expulsion of certain gastrointestinal parasites and causes intestinal mucosal mastocytosis. Because mast cell-derived mediators are spasmogenic, potentially causing parasitic expulsion, we investigated the effect of interleukin-4 on smooth muscle and the mast cell and mediator dependency of this effect. BALB/c, mast cell-deficient W/Wv mice, 5-lipoxygenase-efficient mice, and their littermate controls were injected with interleukin-4-anti-interleukin-4 antibody complexes that chronically increase serum interleukin-4 levels. Mid-small intestinal segments, hung longi

Development of heart inter-beat interval variability in preweanling rats: effects of exposure to alcohol and hypoxia.

The effect of alcohol exposure and hypoxia on the development of heart rate and heart inter-beat interval (IBI) variability was studied in preweanling rats. Rats were artificially reared from postnatal day (PD) 4 through 12 and either exposed to alcohol (5 g/kg/day) or hypoxia (2-15-min episodes/day) from PD 4 to 10. Control groups consisted of artificially reared and normally reared rats not exposed to alcohol or hypoxia. The heart rate and respiration was recorded for 20-min sessions every other day from PD 5 through 21. Inter-beat intervals and measures of their variability caused by respir

Regulation of mucous acinar exocrine secretion with age.

Denny and co-workers (Navazesh et al., 1992) recently reported decreased concentrations of MG1 and MG2 mucins in resting and stimulated whole human saliva with age. The current study was therefore conducted to examine whether there is a corresponding attenuation with age in stimulus secretion coupling regulating mucous cell exocrine secretion. We utilized an in vitro model system, isolated rat sublingual acini, to evaluate the regulation of mucous cell exocrine secretion. Rat sublingual glands are similar to human sublingual and minor mucous glands, both histologically and in terms of their pa

Localization and regulation of low affinity nerve growth factor receptor expression in the rat olfactory system during development and regeneration.

Nerve growth factor (NGF), a classic neurotrophic factor, promotes neuronal survival, maintenance, regeneration and differentiation in the peripheral nervous system and parts of the central nervous system. NGF activity is mediated by cell surface bound receptors including the low affinity NGF receptor (LNGFr) which is expressed by some peripheral and central neurons and is present on peripheral nerve Schwann cells during development and regeneration. The olfactory system is a useful model for the study of the role of LNGFr in neuronal development and regeneration. The growth of olfactory axons

Regional differences in cholinergic innervation and drug sensitivity in the smooth muscles of pig stomach.

1 To evaluate the regional differences in cholinergic mechanisms in the stomach, innervation and receptor distribution were investigated by isometric tension recording, receptor binding assay and measurement of nerve-related enzyme activity in longitudinal and circular smooth muscle layers isolated from various regions of the pig stomach. 2 The response to transmural nerve stimulation (TMS) varied with the muscle layer and portion of stomach tested. Contraction was predominant in the smooth muscle from the pyloric antrum, relaxation in the corpus region. 3 The contraction to TMS was abolished
