Behavioral studies and single cell recordings in monkey inferotemporal cortex have documented greater sensitivity to differences in viewpoint invariant or nonaccidental properties (e.g., straight vs. curved), than metric properties (e.g., degree of curvature) of simple shapes. Are we similarly more sensitive to nonaccidental (NAP) than metric (MP) differences of the relations between objects? We addressed this question with sets of scene triplets that could, from a reference or "Base" scene (e.g., a brick slightly separated from a cylinder), undergo a NAP relational change (e.g., the brick att

Face-selective neural responses in the human fusiform gyrus have been widely examined. However, their causal role in human face perception is largely unknown. Here, we used a multimodal approach of electrocorticography (ECoG), high-resolution functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and electrical brain stimulation (EBS) to directly investigate the causal role of face-selective neural responses of the fusiform gyrus (FG) in face perception in a patient implanted with subdural electrodes in the right inferior temporal lobe. High-resolution fMRI identified two distinct FG face-selective reg

BACKGROUND: It is well known that highly anxious individuals are characterized by the allocation of a greater amount of attentional resources to threatening stimulation. However, neural data in relation to the time course of attentional biases in anxiety are still surprisingly scarce and preliminary. The present research explored attentional biases in anxious subjects (grouped according to their scores in trait and state forms of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory) over time by using event-related potentials (ERPs) and through the application of source localization methodologies.

Although many studies have found similar cortical areas activated during the recognition of objects encoded through vision or touch, little is known about cortical areas involved in the crossmodal recognition of dynamic objects. Here, we investigated which cortical areas are involved in the recognition of moving objects and were specifically interested in whether motion areas are involved in the recognition of dynamic objects within and across sensory modalities. Prior to scanning, participants first learned to recognise a set of 12 novel objects, each presented either visually or haptically,

Visual search is aided by previous knowledge regarding distinguishing features and probable locations of a sought-after target. However, how the human brain represents and integrates concurrent feature-based and spatial expectancies to guide visual search is currently not well understood. Specifically, it is not clear whether spatial and feature-based search information is initially represented in anatomically segregated regions, nor at which level of processing expectancies regarding target features and locations may be integrated. To address these questions, we independently and parametrical

Recent data suggest that subthreshold presentation of emotional information is relayed to the amygdala along subcortical pathways. We examined the effect of backward masked neutral and anxious faces on the social decisions of a group of high functioning children with autism ages 7-13 years and matched controls. Participants were asked to select the friendliest of two faces, one of which was associated with the subthreshold (33 ms) presentation of an anxious face (A/N) and the other a subthreshold neutral face (N/N). Neutral paired faces were selected more often than A/N paired faces by both gr

Brain potentials were recorded in a prosopagnosic patient, in response to familiar and unfamiliar faces he was asked to recognize. The amplitude of the P300 component was found to be an inverse function of probability for each category of faces despite the patient's inability to consciously recognize the familiarity of these faces. In addition, P300 latency varied from 700 to 800 msec according to the familiarity of the faces, and P300 scalp location was different as a function of faces probability and overt recognition. The results imply that covert facial recognition may be evidenced in usin

We studied the spatiotemporal characteristics of cortical activity in early visual areas and the fusiform gyri (FG) by means of magnetoencephalography (MEG). Subjects performed a visual classification task, in which letters and visually similar pseudoletters were presented in different surrounds and under different task demands. The stimuli appeared in a cued half of the visual field (VF). We observed prestimulus effects on amplitudes in V1 and Cuneus relating to VF and task demands, suggesting a combination of active anticipation and specialized routing of activity in visual processing. During apparent motion, spatially distinct items presented in alternation cause the perception of a visual stimulus smoothly traversing the intervening space where no physical stimulus exists. We used fMRI to determine whether the perceptual 'filling-in' that underlies this phenomenon has an early or late cortical locus. Subjects viewed a display comprised of concentric rings that elicited apparent motion (two concentric rings presented in alternation), flicker (the same rings presented simultaneously), or real motion. We independently localized the cortical regions corresponding to the path o

A current issue in alcohol research is whether a "neurobehavioral profile" can be identified for prenatal alcohol exposure, even when dysmorphic features are not present, or whether comparable neurobehavioral deficits are detected when damage is incurred by numerous neurotoxicants to which the fetus is exposed during a common developmental period. Failure to detect such differences may, in part, be an artifact of the global developmental tests used to assess outcome. Cognitive effects of prenatal exposure to three different teratogens [polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), alcohol, and cocaine] ar

Eye movement potentials (EMPs) associated with saccades appear in both subcortical and cortical structures of the primate visual system. In this study, EMPs are recorded across sites in the occipitotemporal (OT) pathway of monkeys performing a pattern-recognition task. We characterize pair recordings of saccade-triggered local field potentials (LFPs) in early extrastriate and inferotemporal regions of the ventral visual pathway using time-frequency spectrograms. Parameters of the spectrograms, including the centroids of identified regions of interest in the time-frequency plane, are extracted

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to investigate the perception thresholds of dental and gingival asymmetries in close-up smile images for orthodontists, dentists, and laypeople.
METHODS: Seven sets of close-up smile images were created, in which gingival and dental asymmetries were intentionally incorporated using a software-imaging program. The alterations included unilateral changes to the gingival border and incisal edge of the central and lateral incisors and crown width of the lateral incisor. Combination sets of both dental and gingival asymmetries together were also created. Eye-tracking

Flexible retrieval mechanisms that allow us to infer relationships across events may also lead to memory errors or distortion when details of one event are misattributed to the related event. Here, we tested how making successful inferences alters representation of overlapping events, leading to false memories. Participants encoded overlapping associations ('AB' and 'BC'), each of which was superimposed on different indoor and outdoor scenes that were pre-exposed prior to associative learning. Participants were subsequently tested on both the directly learned pairs ('AB' and 'BC') and inferred

Visual backward masking (VBM) deficits are candidate endophenotypes of schizophrenia indexing genetic liability of the disorder. In VBM, a target is followed by a mask that deteriorates target perception. Schizophrenia patients and, to a lesser extent, their unaffected relatives show strong and reproducible VBM deficits. In patients, VBM deficits are associated with strongly decreased amplitudes in the evoked-related potentials (ERPs). Here, to unveil the neural mechanisms of VBM in schizophrenia, circumventing illness-specific confounds, we investigated the electroencephalogram correlates of

Aberrations in functional connectivity in children with developmental dyslexia have been found in electroencephalographic studies using graph analysis. How training with visual tasks can modify the functional semantic network in developmental dyslexia remains unclear. We investigate local and global topological properties of functional networks in multiple EEG frequency ranges based on a small-world propensity method in controls, pre- and post-training dyslexic children during visual word/pseudoword processing. Results indicated that the EEG network topology in dyslexics before the training wa

A brain-computer interface (BCI) is a system that translates neural activity into a practical output. Its functionality, therefore, depends not only on the computer itself, but also on the cognitive system of the user. Distractors have the potential to capture attention, increase cognitive load, and may therefore impact BCI use. The purpose of the current study is to determine the effects of small visual distractors on the cognitive load of users of a motor imagery-BCI, and to examine whether these distractor-mediated effects can be improved by modifying the task interface. Sixteen typically-d

Some people experience auditory sensations when seeing visual flashes or movements. This prevalent synaesthesia-like visually evoked auditory response (vEAR) could result either from overexuberant cross-activation between brain areas and/or reduced inhibition of normally occurring cross-activation. We have used transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) to test these theories. We applied tACS at 10 Hz (alpha band frequency) or 40 Hz (gamma band), bilaterally either to temporal or occipital sites, while measuring same/different discrimination of paired auditory (A) versus visual (V) Mo

Recently frontal midline theta (FMθ, 4-8 Hz) oscillations have been consistently reported and proposed as the potential neural mechanism for response inhibition, a core component of human executive functions. However, it remains unclear to what extent the increase of FMθ power during response inhibition tasks is influenced by other non-inhibitory cognitive processes that are usually required for the tasks. In this study, we examined attention-related effects on FMθ during response inhibition by revisiting the EEG data from healthy young adults (N = 30) while performing a spatial cueing Go/NoGo

Recent behavioural evidence shows that visual displays of two individuals interacting are not simply encoded as separate individuals, but as an interactive unit that is 'more than the sum of its parts'. Recent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) evidence shows the importance of the posterior superior temporal sulcus (pSTS) in processing human social interactions, and suggests that it may represent human-object interactions as qualitatively 'greater' than the average of their constituent parts. The current study aimed to investigate whether the pSTS or other posterior temporal lobe reg
