A comprehensive treatment with Likopid of chronic generalized parodontitis in 114 elderly and senile patients was carried out. The state of mechanisms of innate immunity (phagocytosis mechanisms) as well as the profile of proinflammatory cytokines was assessed. The effect of antibiotic-resistant strains of prior microflora on the combined therapy of patients of different age with chronic generalized parodontitis was studied. It is established that due to presence of various types of opportunistic pathogens in patients of different age with parodontitis using the prophylactic antibiotics for th

BACKGROUND: Interleukin (IL)-18 is a proinflammatory cytokine of the IL-1 superfamily and is unique, with the capacity to induce T-helper (Th)1 or Th2 differentiation depending on the immunologic context. Monocyte chemoattractant protein (MCP)-1 is a CC chemokine responsible for chemotaxis of monocytes. A previous study showed the induction of MCP-1 by IL-18 in mice macrophages. The present study was carried out to examine the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) levels of IL-18 and MCP-1 in periodontal health and disease and to evaluate any correlation between IL-18 and MCP-1 GCF levels.

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis develops in a time-dependent manner. Cross-sectional studies document one moment in time but fail to capture the progressive nature of disease. Radiographic measures of bone loss are relatively insensitive but are reliable markers of irreversible disease. Longitudinal studies are needed to identify biomarkers that can precede radiographic evidence of bone loss and, thus, mark the period prior to clinical evidence of irreversible disease. A longitudinal study of students susceptible to localized aggressive periodontitis (LAgP) was conducted to evaluate chemokines/cytok

Tooth eruption is a multifactorial process involving movement of existing tissues and formation of new tissues coordinated by a complex set of genetic events. We have used the model of the unopposed rodent molar to study morphological and genetic mechanisms involved in axial movement of teeth. Following extraction of opposing upper molars, lower molars supererupted by 0.13 mm. Labeled tissue sections revealed significant amounts of new bone and cementum apposition at the root apex of the unopposed side following supereruption for 12 days. Newly apposited cementum and alveolar bone layers were

The use of dental implants in the treatment of fully edentulous patients has become an important addition in oral/dental rehabilitation. The fact that these implants penetrate the oral mucosa can lead to the assumption that peri-implant tissues, similar to the periodontal tissues, are fulfilling an important function as a barrier to protect the bony anchorage underneath. It has been shown that insufficient plaque removal may lead to peri-implant tissue disease with bone loss similar to teeth. However, it is unclear how important this cause is as a source of implant failure compared with other

The aim of the experiment was to describe the formation of periodontal tissues in degree III furcation defects following GTR therapy. The study was performed in 8 foxhound dogs. The 2nd and 4th premolars in both sides of the mandible were extracted. Furcation defects were produced in the 3rd mandibular premolars. 3 weeks later, reconstructive surgery was performed. The dogs were scheduled for sacrifice 2, 4, 8, and 20 weeks after GTR therapy. Tissue blocks containing the experimental teeth were excised, demineralized in EDTA and embedded in paraffin. Serial sections were cut in the mesio-dista

The bacteriological colonization of healing periodontal defects was investigated after treatment with guided tissue regeneration using expanded polytetrafluoroethylene membranes together with local metronidazole gel (25%, 250 mg/g). Twelve patients, each with one pair of comparable defects, had the test defect treated with the membrane plus metronidazole gel and the control defect treated with the membrane alone. Thirty weeks after removal of the membrane, the median gain in probing attachment level as a percentage of the initial defect depth was 92% for the test defects and 50% for the contro

The aim of this investigation was to assess the role of supportive periodontal care in the maintenance of clinical attachment gained, after surgical treatment according to the principles of GTR, in deep infrabony defects. Following GTR treatment, 40 deep infrabony defects in 23 patients gained 4.1 mm of probing attachment level (PAL) after 1 year of stringent plaque control. In the subsequent 3 years, 15 patients (22 sites, group A) were recalled every 3 months. In this group, the gained attachment level remained stable. Conversely, 8 patients (18 sites, group B), who received only sporadic ca

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by the destruction of the components of the periodontium. It significantly impacts oral health and has been linked to systemic conditions like cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The critical role of neutrophils in the occurrence and development of chronic periodontitis has been paid increasing attention. The study aimed to explore the protective effects of D-mannose on chronic periodontitis and determine whether its underlying mechanisms is related to neutrophils.
METHODS: To explore the protective effects of D-mannos…

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The predictability of conventional periodontal treatments for damaged periodontal tissue is limited, particularly on the regeneration of new cementum. As signaling molecules, a range of growth factors has been used to promote periodontal regeneration on periodontal ligament (PDL) and cementum defects. A preameloblast-conditioned medium (PA-CM) was prepared from cultured murine apical bud cells, which can differentiate into ameloblasts. We examined the effect of PA-CM on PDL cells and cementoblasts in vitro and evaluated histologically the effects of PA-CM on the regen

The mainstream use of dental implants has allowed millions of patients to benefit from the predictability of dental implant therapy and, in many instances, dental implants have become the standard of care. Even though success rates in implant dentistry are well above 90 percent, complications do occur. Most complications are preventable with proper planning and execution. Others are inherent to the risks of surgery and may require intervention. The purpose of this paper is to classify the possible complications that may occur and to discuss their prevention and management.

The aim of the present study was to clarify whether there is any correlation between the levels of high-sensitivity C reactive protein (hs-CRP) and stem cell factor (SCF) in serum and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) of patients with chronic periodontitis (CP) with and without type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). A total of 40 subjects were divided into 3 groups: 10 periodontally healthy subjects (Group 1), 15 CP patients (Group 2), and 15 type 2 DM patients with CP (Group 3). Levels of hs-CRP and SCF in GCF and serum were quantified using different techniques. The clinical outcomes evaluated were gi

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the dynamic changes in the periodontal microstructure and the molar displacement pattern during orthodontic tooth movement in ovariectomized rats.
METHODS: Twenty ovariectomized rats received either 100 or 30 g of orthodontic force to induce mesial movement of the maxillary left first molars over 14 days. Ten healthy rats underwent sham operations as controls. Periodontal ligament thickness, alveolar bone microstructural properties, and displacement of the molar were measured with 6 in-vivo microcomputed tomography scans for each sample.

Success of tooth replantation is limited because part of the replanted tooth is lost because of progressive root resorption. This study used histomorphometry and immunohistochemistry to evaluate the effect of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on the healing process of rat teeth replanted after different extra-oral periods, simulating immediate and delayed replantation. Sixty Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus albinus) had their maxillary right incisors extracted and randomly assigned to six groups (n = 10): C4, C30 and C45, in which the teeth were replanted 4 min (immediate), 30 min (delayed) and 45

BACKGROUND: Pentraxins are classic mediators of inflammation and markers of acute-phase reactions. Pentraxin-3 (PTX3) is the first-identified long pentraxin and is believed to be a true independent indicator of disease activity. Although a classic pentraxin, C-reactive protein, and its association with various systemic diseases is well documented in the periodontal literature, there is no data on PTX3 to our knowledge.
METHODS: Forty participants (20 males and 20 females; age range: 23 to 50 years) were involved in the study. Participants were divided into three groups based on gingival index
