Nasal polyps are the results of chronic inflammation of nasal mucosa. Ethiopathology of nasal polyposis is still unclear and investigated. The main aim of this study was the assessment of interleukin 2 (IL-2), 4 (IL-4) and 13 (IL-13) and interferon gamma (IFN-gamma) expressions in two groups of patients with nasal polyps: non-allergic and allergic to dust. Calcium (Ca2+) influx into human polymorphonuclear cells (PMNs) in response to N-formyl-Met-Leu-Phe (fMLP) and platelet-activating factor (PAF) stimulation was studied. Estrogens and glucocorticoids often act in opposition to regulate physiological responses. We investigated whether this might reflect the opposing actions of hormone-bound receptors on target genes regulated by the AP-1 response element. We performed a series of transfection experiments in which transcriptional activation, mediated by the AP-1 response element, was reflected in reporter gene activity.
