Repetitive peripheral magnetic stimulation (rPMS) induces proprioceptive afferents and facilitates corticospinal excitability. Short-term sessions of rPMS combined with motor imagery (MI) enhance corticospinal excitability more than rPMS alone. However, it is not clear how long the intervention of rPMS combined with MI would be needed to facilitate corticospinal excitability. Therefore, we investigated the time course change in corticospinal excitability during the combination of rPMS and MI. Thirteen healthy volunteers participated in a 20-min intervention under the following three experiment

The robot hand illusion (RoHI) is the perception of self-ownership and self-agency of a virtual (robot) hand that moves consistently with one's own. The phenomenon shows that self-attribution can be established via temporal integration of visual and movement information. Our previous study showed that participants felt significantly greater RoHI (sense of self-ownership and sense of self-agency) when visuomotor temporal discrepancies were less than 200 ms. A weaker RoHI effect (sense of self-agency only) was observed when temporal discrepancies were between 300 and 500 ms. Here, we used functi

OBJECTIVE: Cerebellar ataxia essentially includes deficient postural control. It remains unclear whether augmented sensory information might help cerebellar patients, as the cerebellum underlies processing of various sensory modalities for postural control. Here, we hypothesized that patients with cerebellar degeneration can still exploit audio-biofeedback (ABF) of trunk acceleration as a real-time assistive signal to compensate for deficient postural control.
METHODS: Effects on postural sway during stance were assessed in an ABF intervention group versus a no-ABF disease control group (23 v

BACKGROUND: Some cases of repeated inversion ankle sprains are thought to have a neurological basis and are termed functional ankle instability (FAI). In addition to factors local to the ankle, such as loss of proprioception, cognitive demands have the ability to influence motor control and may increase the risk of repetitive lateral sprains.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of cognitive demand on foot kinematics in physically active people with functional ankle instability.
METHODS: 21 physically active participants with FAI and 19 matched healthy controls …

Orchestration of sensory-motor information and adaptation to internal or external, acute or chronic changes is one of the fundamental features of human postural control. The postural control system is challenged on a daily basis, and displays a remarkable ability to adapt to both long and short term challenges. To explore the interaction between support surface stability and Achilles tendon vibration during a period of adaptation we used both a linear measure and a non-linear measure derived from center-of-pressure (COP) data. An equilibrium score (ES), based upon peak amplitude of anterior-po

Few clinical studies have evaluated physiotherapeutic interventions in patients with degenerative cerebellar ataxia. Investigations on the effectiveness of biofeedback-based interventions for training postural control in these patients have not been conducted yet. The aim of the present study was to assess the effectiveness of a 2-week intensive tongue-placed electrotactile biofeedback program for patients with progressive cerebellar ataxia. Subjects were seven adult patients suffering from cerebellar degeneration. Postural control was assessed with static posturography in two sensory conditio

Humans readily perceive ownership of a limb even when it is artificially induced as in the case of using a mirror reflection. However, mirror reflections are very constrained perceptions which do not allow transformations and varied contexts as often occurs in real life. The extent to which perceived limb ownership occurs with video-mediated manipulations is not known, particularly given the perception would no longer be a precise copy (reflection) of a person's own limb. The present study directly compared referred sensations of the limbs with the use of a mirror reflection to those obtained

CONTEXT: Most protocols established to treat patients with functional ankle instability (FAI) have focused on taping the ankle. Orthotic intervention is a different treatment protocol that may have a positive effect on these patients, especially after an accommodation period.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the use of a prefabricated orthotic affects postural stability in patients with FAI and a control group.
DESIGN: Randomized controlled clinical trial.
SETTING: Research laboratory.
PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS: Forty patients with unilateral FAI.

This paper purpose is to suggest an in-depth approach to diagnose the causes and lesions associated with and consecutive to chronic ankle instability due to ankle collateral ligament laxity. The different therapeutic and medicosurgical options adapted to this diagnostic approach are identified. The diagnostic aim is to precisely locate the ligamentous injuries of the tibiofibular, subtalar, talar and calcanean system, to identify the predisposing factors such as the hindfoot morphology, and any lesions associated with chronicity: anterolateral impingement, fibular injury, osteochondral lesions

When stationary observers view an optic-flow pattern, visually induced self-motion perception (vection) and a form of motion sickness known as simulator sickness (SS), can result. Previous results suggest that an expanding flow pattern leads to more SS than a contracting pattern. Sensory conflict, a possible cause of SS, may be more salient when an expanding optic-flow pattern is viewed. An experiment was conducted to test if a more salient sensory conflict accompanying expanding flow patterns might inhibit vection. Participants (n = 15) viewed a pattern of blue squares, either steadily expand

The present work investigated the control of upright posture on inclined surfaces (14 degrees). Such conditions could, for example, change the contributions of muscle spindles resulting in alterations in postural sway. Subjects stood in quiet stance over a force platform positioned in one of three different fixed positions: horizontal (H), toes-up (ankle dorsi-flexion, D) and toes-down (ankle plantar-flexion, P). The experiments were done in the presence and also in the absence of vision. The analysis of the resulting sway was based on the power spectrum of the center of pressure displacement

OBJECTIVE: People affected by osteoporosis are at particular risk for bone fractures caused by falls. Preventive intervention depends on first describing the risk factors for falls present in this population as a group and as individuals. In this preliminary study, balance characteristics of women with and without osteoporosis were measured with computerized dynamic posturography (CDP).
DESIGN: A case control design was selected to compare the balance characteristics of each group of patients with osteoporosis.
SETTING: Testing was performed in the vestibular assessment area of our multispec

Opioids, barbiturates and volatile organic substances are the most common drugs used in Poland by addicts. In the literature there are no data concerning efficiency of vestibular organs of addicted persons examined during abstinence period. 74 drug addicts and 50 healthy persons were subjected to ENG examinations (spontaneous nystagmus, positional ny gaze ny, eye-tracking test, optokinetic test, rotatory test and caloric test were evaluated). ENG showed abnormal records in all tests performed in the addicted persons. This study has revealed that addicts have insufficiency of vestibular organs,

This paper investigates the strength of the quadriceps extensor femoris following partial meniscectomy by means of arthrotomy. Measurements were carried out on 30 patients using a velocity-controlled dynamometer. Follow-up ranged from three to twelve years. On clinical examination 17 patients revealed atrophy of the quadriceps, amounting to 1 cm in 12 patients and up to 2 cm in 5 patients. The average difference in muscular strength between the operated leg and the non-operated one totalled 11% in the cases of 1 cm atrophy and 19% in the 2 cm cases. Those patients who presented with no atrophy

Studying the sensorimotor response of flying insects is usually done in tethered conditions. The righting reflex, for example, is studied with insects that are released either from a rigid or a magnetic tether. The attached tether or magnet may, however, induce proprioceptive biases and behavioral artifacts through physical contact and additional mass or inertia. Here, we propose a contactless tether apparatus based on acoustic levitation. It relies on the emission of ultrasonic waves on both sides of the device, creating standing pressure waves-visualized using the schlieren technique-that en

Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is an area full of controversies. The anatomical distribution of various sensory fibers in the sensory root of the trigeminal nerve at the root entry zone (REZ), the classification of TN, clinical features to differentiate from other facial pain syndromes, pathogenesis of TN, the plethora of treatment modalities for the medically intractable TN with their relative merits and demerits, are an interesting area of study. Understanding these aspects will help us to find concrete answers to these various issues. Dandy's concept of accessory fascicles near the trigeminal RE
