The global blood supply: a literature review.

BACKGROUND: A safe and sufficient blood supply is requisite for a functional surgical system. Although the disparity in blood donation rates between low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) and high-income countries is well documented, less is known about the reasons for this inequity, which compromises efforts to remedy it. We aimed to review the state of the blood supply and elucidate unique country-specific challenges in each of the world's 196 countries. METHODS: We searched PubMed, MEDLINE, Google Scholar, and WHO reports using the search terms "blood donor", "blood donation","bloo

Bacterial profile and antimicrobial resistance patterns among pediatrics patients with suspected bloodstream infections in Ethiopia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Bloodstream infection (sepsis) represents a systemic inflammatory response to systemic infection by bacteria, fungi, and viruses that can lead to severe complications and death. The therapeutic management to reduce mortality and morbidity associated with sepsis is difficult due partly to (re)emergence of antimicrobial resistance. The choice of empirical antibiotics, therefore, partly depends on the pattern of local/national antibiotic resistance. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the prevalence of bacteremia among pediatric patients with suspected bloodstr

Prevalence of intestinal parasites in school-age children in Turkey: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal parasites are a major public health problem worldwide, especially in societies with low socioeconomic status and where sanitation rules are not sufficiently emphasized. School-age children are the most affected group in these societies. In light of the literature data, the intestinal parasites detected in school-age children and the geographical and socioeconomic structure of Turkey are evaluated together. The study hypothesizes that the parasite prevalence in school-age children is high, and there is substantial socioeconomic and geographical variation in species-specif

Predicting the artificial immunity induced by RUTI® vaccine against tuberculosis using universal immune system simulator (UISS).

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) represents a worldwide cause of mortality (it infects one third of the world's population) affecting mostly developing countries, including India, and recently also developed ones due to the increased mobility of the world population and the evolution of different new bacterial strains capable to provoke multi-drug resistance phenomena. Currently, antitubercular drugs are unable to eradicate subpopulations of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) bacilli and therapeutic vaccinations have been postulated to overcome some of the critical issues related to the increase of

One-to-One and Group-Based Teleconferencing for Falls Rehabilitation: Usability, Acceptability, and Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Falls have implications for the health of older adults. Strength and balance interventions significantly reduce the risk of falls; however, patients seldom perform the dose of exercise that is required based on evidence. Health professionals play an important role in supporting older adults as they perform and progress in their exercises. Teleconferencing could enable health professionals to support patients more frequently, which is important in exercise behavior. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine the overall concept and acceptability of teleconferencing for the delivery of f

Training dentists in tobacco cessation counselling in Manila, Philippines: a mixed-methods study with implications for practice and education.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco use remains a leading public health challenge in the Philippines, contributing substantially to oral and systemic diseases. Dental professionals are well placed to deliver tobacco cessation counselling (TCC), yet its integration into routine practice remains limited. Evidence on theory-informed training interventions for dental professionals in low- and middle-income countries is scarce. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a structured training intervention on dentists' capability, opportunity and motivation to deliver TCC within dental settings. METHODS: A converg

Public health determinants of screening accessibility, diagnostic and treatment timeliness, care adherence, and survival outcomes in breast cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Disparities in public health infrastructure, healthcare access, and system-level support contribute to delays in breast cancer screening, diagnosis, treatment initiation, and adherence to care, leading to advanced-stage presentation and poorer survival, particularly among rural and underserved populations. AIM: To evaluate the influence of individual, community, and health system level determinants on screening access, timeliness of diagnosis and treatment, adherence to therapy, and survival outcomes among women with breast cancer. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study include…

Pathways to lung cancer diagnosis and treatment among patients in Ethiopia: A qualitative study.

Late-stage presentation remains a major challenge for cancer control in low- and middle-income countries, driven by limited cancer care infrastructure, diagnostic constraints, and the lack of organized lung cancer screening programs. Therefore, this study explored the pathways of lung cancer diagnosis and treatment, as well as patients’ experiences throughout this journey in Ethiopia. This multicenter qualitative study in three tertiary hospitals involved interviews with 33 primary lung cancer patients who had started at least one treatment and were analyzed thematically, beginning with a dedu

From campaign to continuity: stakeholders' recommendations for integrating HPV vaccination into Nigeria's healthcare system.

BACKGROUND: For Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination to be delivered effectively, countries must transition from campaign-based introduction to integration within the routine immunization schedule. While existing literature provides insights into the effectiveness of HPV campaigns and barriers to initial vaccine acceptance, there is a dearth of stakeholder-informed implementation research around the transition from campaign to routine delivery. This study aimed to explore the experiences and perspectives of key stakeholders involved in the HPV vaccine campaign in Nigeria to generate stakehol

Local perceptions of cholera and anticipated vaccine acceptance in Katanga province, Democratic Republic of Congo.

BACKGROUND: In regions where access to clean water and the provision of a sanitary infrastructure has not been sustainable, cholera continues to pose an important public health burden. Although oral cholera vaccines (OCV) are effective means to complement classical cholera control efforts, still relatively little is known about their acceptability in targeted communities. Clarification of vaccine acceptability prior to the introduction of a new vaccine provides important information for future policy and planning. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study in Katanga province, Democratic Republic of

Digital Medicine and Artificial Intelligence in Chronic Myeloid Leukemia: Current Applications, Challenges, and Future Directions.

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) has become a paradigm for targeted therapy with BCR-ABL1 tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). However, the growing volume and complexity of clinical, molecular, and imaging data challenge traditional decision-making based on static risk scores. Digital health technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) offer new opportunities to enhance diagnosis, risk stratification, and treatment personalization in CML. This narrative review is based on a focused literature search in PubMed/MEDLINE and Web of Science (2010-2025), combined with expert selection of pivotal studie

Current outlook of infectious diseases in Taiwan.

The "emerging" infectious diseases have received global attention. Taiwan is a country which is going through the process of becoming "developed" from being "developing". If we compare five leading causes of death in 1952 and in 1993, three were infectious diseases in 1952 and there was none in 1993. And yet today, infectious diseases remain a major problem in this country as well in every country in the world, whether developing or developed. Some of the problems Taiwan faces are old problems with old faces. They have never been adequately solved because the societal and environmental sanitar
