Antibodies to Enteroviruses in Cerebrospinal Fluid of Patients with Acute Flaccid Myelitis.

Acute flaccid myelitis (AFM) has caused motor paralysis in >560 children in the United States since 2014. The temporal association of enterovirus (EV) outbreaks with increases in AFM cases and reports of fever, respiratory, or gastrointestinal illness prior to AFM in >90% of cases suggest a role for infectious agents. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from 14 AFM and 5 non-AFM patients with central nervous system (CNS) diseases in 2018 were investigated by viral-capture high-throughput sequencing (VirCapSeq-VERT system). These CSF and serum samples, as well as multiple controls, were tested for antibo

Generation of motor neurons from pluripotent stem cells.

Alpha motor neurons (also known as lower or skeletal motor neurons) have been studied extensively for over 100 years. Motor neurons control the contraction of skeletal muscles and thus are the final common pathway in the nervous system responsible for motor behavior. Muscles become paralyzed when their innervating motor neurons die because of injury or disease. Motor neuron diseases (MNDs), such as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, progressively destroy motor neurons until those inflicted succumb to the illness due to respiratory failure. One strategy being explored to study and treat muscle para

Comorbidity profile of poliomyelitis survivors in a Chinese population: a population-based study.

Previous reports of comorbid conditions in poliomyelitis survivors mainly focused on some disease categories, such as respiratory diseases, gastrointestinal diseases, psychiatric diseases, neurological diseases and cancer. Data regarding a wide spectrum of medical comorbidities in patients with poliomyelitis is still sparse. This study aimed to investigate and profile the wide range of comorbidities among the survivors of paralytic poliomyelitis in a Chinese population. In total, 2,032 paralytic poliomyelitis patients were selected as the study group and the comparison group consisted of 10,16

Video-assisted diaphragm plication in children.

BACKGROUND: Diaphragm paralysis after cardiac surgery may be secondary to phrenic nerve injury by ice, electrocautery, or dissection. Although most are asymptomatic, some patients, particularly children, have significant respiratory compromise. Video-assisted plication may offer more rapid improvement and recovery than thoracotomy in pediatric patients. METHODS: We performed five procedures. The diaphragm was elevated, clamped, oversewn, and tacked down into the pleural gutter. The procedure was performed on 2 infants after repair of total anomalous pulmonary venous connection, on 1 child aft

General aspects of rehabilitation in Guillain-Barre syndrome: A literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Guillain-Barré syndrome is the most common cause of acquired flaccid paralysis worldwide. Although care traditionally focuses on overcoming the acute phase, many patients continue to experience residual symptoms such as weakness, neuropathic pain, autonomic dysfunction, and fatigue. These sequelae can result in significant disability and adversely affect long-term functionality and quality of life, underscoring the importance of an early, coordinated, and multidisciplinary treatment approach. METHODS: A non-systematic narrative review of the literature on functional recovery in
