The Authors report a case of Strongyloides stercoralis infection in an autochthonous farmer from Piedmont (Northern Italy) presenting as an eosinophilic lung disease. After having briefly considered the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of the Strongyloides stercoralis infection, the Authors conclude by affirming that the appearance of migratory pulmonary infiltrates in autochthonous subjects or resident in Canavese area (Piedmont), especially if blood and sputum eosinophilia is present, should raise the possibility of Strongyloides-induced lung disease and lead to appropriate exami

Goblet and mast cell responses in the jejunum of four genera, Mesocricetus auratus (Syrian hamster), Phodopus campbelli, Cricetulus griseus (Chinese hamster), and Tscherskia triton, belonging to the subfamily Cricetinae, were examined after infection with Strongyloides venezuelensis. Parasite eggs became detectable in faeces of all four genera on Day 7. Faecal egg count peaked around Day 8 in C. griseus and T. triton and around Day 14 in M. auratus and P. campbelli. In M. auratus and P. campbelli, faecal egg production persisted over 40 days, whereas that in C. griseus and T. triton rapidly te

To investigate the etiology of chronic diarrhea associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in Lusaka, we studied 63 HIV-positive patients and 36 seronegative controls clinically and endoscopically. Stools were studied for morphology and for opportunist infections. Fifty-five percent of patients seropositive for HIV who presented with a history of chronic diarrhea had parasites; the most common were Cryptosporidium (32%), Isospora belli (16%), and Strongyloides stercoralis (6%). As indicated by villous blunting and inflammation on duodenal histology, those with diarrhea and pa

A technique is described for radiolabeling Strongyloides stercoralis larvae with [75Se]selenomethionine. Cultures of an auxotrophic methionine-dependent stain of Escherichia coli were grown in a medium containing Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium supplemented with 5% nutrient broth, amino acids, and [75Se]selenomethionine. When the 75Se-labeled bacterial populations were in the stationary phase of growth, cultures were harvested and the bacteria dispersed on agar plates to serve as food for S. stercoralis larvae. Use of nondividing bacteria is important for successful labeling because the iso

Acute pyogenic meningitis occurred in a 46-year-old woman receiving long-term steroid therapy. Cultures for bacteria and fungi were negative, and the meningitis failed to respond to broad spectrum antibiotics. Abundant Strongyloides stercoralis larvae were found in the patient's feces a sputum, and a filariform larva was found in a hanging drop preparation from centrifuged cerebrospinal fluid. Therapy with thiabendazole eradicated the Strongyloides from feces and sputum. The abnormal CSF values returned toward normal, and the patient has had no recurrence of illness.

Two cases of unsuspected Strongyloides stercoralis infection were elucidated by the displacement of bacterial colonies on primary plating media. Observation of primary plates inoculated for the diagnosis of bacterial pneumonia or gastroenteritis revealed that normal flora colonies had been moved and were aligned in a pathway, or track. This unusual colony alignment prompted us to request a stool for the examination of parasites, and S. stercoralis was found. It was concluded that the parasite is capable of motility on agar surfaces, resulting in the displacement of bacterial colonies that make

Parasitological complex studies of the available eland stock (60 individuals) were first carried out. As a result 100 % infection rate of the herd and the age dynamics of strongylatoses were revealed. The autopsy of animals have shown that five species of six species of nematodes and one species of cestodes are common parasites of ruminants of the Ukraine steppe zone and two species are specific parasites of eland. For sanitation of the herd an anthelminthic preparation produced in Hungary was used. The preparation decreased the initial infection rate to 7.3%.

When Plasmodium berghei and Strongyloides ratti are associated, each one of these parasites can modify development of the other one. This repercussion is subordinated to the respective periods of contamination and strength of influential parasitism. It lies in an inhibition of Protozoosis or intensification of helminthiasis. When severe, palustral infection releases two hypercosticosteronemy phases; the more important one is situated at the peak of the parasitemia. These hypercorticosteronemiae reactions to a severe malaria enable the interpretation of the variations of an associateds trongylo

The eggs of Strongyloides westeri were found in the faeces of the foals from the 16th day of their life, with a peak in their numbers between the 30th and 40th day of life. Egg release ceased in all foals irrespective of their date of birth in the months July-August. Parallel examinations of the mares were negative. Recommendations for the control of strongyloidosis in foals are given.
