Automated scheme of plaque classification based on segmentation in carotid ultrasound images using transformer approach.

PURPOSE: Carotid plaque is a major risk factor for cerebral infarction. Ultrasonography (US) is extensively used for screening carotid plaque, but US images contain more noise than those of computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, and the edges of the plaque regions are unclear. In addition, B-mode echogenicity evaluation, which is important for plaque risk assessment, has challenges involving the subjectivity of the evaluator. Although previous studies on carotid plaque assessment have included plaque segmentation, most studies involved manual operations. In this study, we propose

The clinical presentation and genetic diagnosis of Tangier disease in the pediatric age group.

OBJECTIVES: Tangier disease (TD) is a rare autosomal recessive condition characterized by high-density lipoprotein (HDL) deficiency; involving symptoms of polyneuropathy, hyperplastic orange-yellow tonsils, vision disorder, and sudden cardiac death. The major clinical symptoms of TD may not all be co-present. This study evaluates patients diagnosed with TD in childhood to improve the possibility of early diagnosis of asymptomatic cases by reporting our patients' clinical characteristics in order to minimize delayed diagnosis and emphasize the importance of TD, easily detected by HDL measuremen

Kinematic Assessment of Fine Motor Skills in Children: Comparison of a Kinematic Approach and a Standardized Test.

Deficits in fine motor skills have been reported in some children with neurodevelopmental disorders such as amblyopia or strabismus. Therefore, monitoring the development of motor skills and any potential improvement due to therapy is an important clinical goal. The aim of this study was to test the feasibility of performing a kinematic assessment within an optometric setting using inexpensive, portable, off-the-shelf equipment. The study also assessed whether kinematic data could enhance the information provided by a routine motor function screening test (the Movement Assessment Battery for C

Enhancing glaucoma diagnosis: Generative adversarial networks in synthesized imagery and classification with pretrained MobileNetV2.

The disease affects the optic nerve and represents the principle reasons of irreversible vision loss, mostly asymptomatic and uncontrolled. Consequently, early and accurate diagnosis is critical to prevent or reduce its effect, however, conventional diagnostic techniques often fail to provide concrete results. In this regard, we present a new approach built on Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) and MobileNetV2 pretrained architecture for diagnosing glaucoma. Here, the imbalance in medical imaging that comes with small datasets is addressed using GANs to generate improved quality of the fund

Optimizing open-angle glaucoma risk assessment in patients with retinal vein occlusions.

PURPOSE: To evaluate factors associated with the diagnosis of open-angle glaucoma (OAG) after a retinal vein occlusion (RVO). DESIGN: Retrospective, cross-sectional study. METHODS: Patients diagnosed with OAG after RVO were matched 2:1 with RVO patients without prior glaucoma. Logistic regression identified factors linked to OAG diagnosis. RESULTS: Of 1178 RVO patients without initial OAG, 51 (4.5%) were later diagnosed with OAG after an average of 5.5 ± 6.1 years. Screening tests for OAG were performed at a higher frequency in patients diagnosed with OAG compared with patients who never re

Dysfunctional Autophagy, Proteostasis, and Mitochondria as a Prelude to Age-Related Macular Degeneration.

Retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cell dysfunction is a key driving force of AMD. RPE cells form a metabolic interface between photoreceptors and choriocapillaris, performing essential functions for retinal homeostasis. Through their multiple functions, RPE cells are constantly exposed to oxidative stress, which leads to the accumulation of damaged proteins, lipids, nucleic acids, and cellular organelles, including mitochondria. As miniature chemical engines of the cell, self-replicating mitochondria are heavily implicated in the aging process through a variety of mechanisms. In the eye, mitoch

The Anatomy and Clinical Significance of Sensory Disturbance in Parkinson's Disease.

The clinical features of Parkinson's disease (PD) include tremors and rigidity. However, paresthesia has not drawn clinical attention. PD involves the whole body and begins with gastrointestinal lesions, which do not start in the midbrain substantia nigra, but from the beginning of the medulla oblongata of the glossopharyngeal nerve nuclei, to the motor nerve dorsal nucleus of the vagus nerve, to the pons and midbrain, and finally to the neocortex. The human eye, ear, nose, tongue, and body perceive the external world. (1) Visual impairment in patients with PD can be easily confused with senil

An Insight into Primary Congenital Glaucoma.

Glaucoma is the second most prominent cause of impaired vision in the world. Over 60 million individuals are presently affected, and 12 million are sightless as a result. Primary congenital glaucoma (PCG) is a childhood disease that can lead to blindness in newborns and very young children. The rate of occurrence of PCG varies in different communities and across geographical boundaries, and its etiology is unknown. It is caused by genetic structural defects in the trabecular meshwork and makes its appearence in newborns and children no older than three years. PCG is most prevalent in populatio

Medicinal chemistry of P2 and adenosine receptors: Common scaffolds adapted for multiple targets.

Prof. Geoffrey Burnstock originated the concept of purinergic signaling. He demonstrated the interactions and biological roles of ionotropic P2X and metabotropic P2Y receptors. This review paper traces the historical origins of many currently used antagonists and agonists for P2 receptors, as well as adenosine receptors, in early attempts to identify ligands for these receptors - prior to the use of chemical libraries for screening. Rather than presenting a general review of current purinergic ligands, we focus on common chemical scaffolds (privileged scaffolds) that can be adapted for multipl
