Rafting kelp from California - is it alive? Physiological condition, ultrastructure and reaction to high UV treatment.

Kelp forests are essential marine ecosystems providing high-density habitats, nurseries, and food for countless species, including fish, invertebrates, and mammals. An increasing number of rafting thalli have been observed recently. This phenomenon may represent a natural dispersal strategy of kelp populations, or alternatively, it may be associated with rising ocean temperatures and the increased frequency and intensity of storm events. In the latter case, one can assume that thalli would be degrading during rafting and be associated with declining physiology. With this rationale in mind, we

A cascade-responsive nanoplatform for cyclooxygenase-2 inhibition and inflammation regulation to enhance photoimmunotherapy.

Photodynamic immunotherapy (PIT) has emerged as a promising cancer treatment by photo-activating host immune system to eliminate tumor. However, excessive oxidative stress generated during PIT often induces uncontrolled inflammatory responses and activates immunosuppressive pathways to determine the efficacy of PIT. Herein, we developed a cascade responsive nanoplatform (FBC@PTI) to reduce the inflammation level by co-assembly of an indomethacin-based amphiphilic block copolymer and photosensitizer tetrafluorophenyl bacterial chlorophyll (FBC). Under acidic TME conditions, FBC@PTI underwent su

Physiological Responses of Syringa oblata Seedlings to Foliar Salicylic Acid Under Short-Term Heat Stress.

High temperature can impair leaf water status, photosynthetic function, and membrane stability in ornamental woody seedlings. However, integrated evidence combining gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence, oxidative injury, antioxidant activity, and osmotic-adjustment-related responses in heat-stressed Syringa oblata remains limited. One-year-old seedlings from a single nursery batch were exposed for 7 d to 25/18 °C or 40/30 °C day/night conditions and sprayed with either a solvent solution or 0.5 mM salicylic acid. Growth, leaf water status, photosynthetic pigments, gas exchange, pulse-amplitu

Carbon dynamics in the intertidal rockpools along the central west coast of India.

Shallow inter-tidal ecosystems such as rockpools provide important insights into the ongoing climatic changes and their consequences. We studied the diurnal and seasonal variations in carbon chemistry and associated physicochemical parameters of intertidal rockpools along the central west coast of India for four years. The temperature (26 °C-39 °C), salinity (3-55), pHT (7.79-9.27) and other carbon parameters exhibited a huge variation in the studied rockpools. These significant variabilities were observed in the parameters among seasons and low to high intertidal transition (tidal zone). Ecos

Zinc oxide nanoparticle biofortification of lentil seedlings enhances plant growth and zinc bioavailability in rats.

This study aimed to evaluate the potential of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) in the biofortification of lentil seedlings and subsequently improve the Zn status in rats. In the first phase of the study, the effects of various ZnO NPs concentrations (0, 10, 20, 40, 80, and 160 ppm) on the lentil growth, Zn accumulation, and other physiological parameters were investigated. Subsequently, the rats were fed ZnO NP-biofortified lentil seedlings (20 and 160 ppm) to assess their impact on animal health and Zn status. The results highlighted a concentration-dependent response of lentil seedlings to

Picophytoplankton identification by flow cytometry and high-throughput sequencing in a clean reservoir.

Understanding picophytoplankton variations that play important roles in the material circulation and energy flow are critical to assessing overall status of waterbody, especially for clean reservoirs which remain a relatively stable community structure and high species diversity due to lower nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients. However, their response to key environmental factors and tightly acting microbial remains poorly understood. Traditional quantification methods are limited, such as chlorophyll-a, turbidity and microscope. There are still many defects with present molecular analysis. In t

Preferential damaging effects of limited magnesium bioavailability on photosystem I in Sulla carnosa plants.

Magnesium deficiency preferentially inhibits photosystem I rather than photosystem II in Sulla carnosa plants. The effects of magnesium (Mg(2+)) deficiency on growth, photosynthetic performance, pigment and polypeptide composition of chloroplast membranes were studied in the halophyte Sulla carnosa (Desf.), an annual legume endemic to Tunisia and Algeria. The results demonstrate a gradual decrease in biomass production with decreasing Mg(2+) availability in the growth medium. The increase of Mg(2+) deficiency was also associated with a decline of the net CO2 assimilation (Pn) in fully expanded

Carboxymethyl cellulose-ferulic acid nanocomposite enhances salinity tolerance and phytochemical accumulation in Dracocephalum moldavica via coordinated redox and osmotic regulation.

BACKGROUND: Salinity is a significant constraint on medicinal and aromatic plants that limits their growth and photosynthetic activity, increases oxidative stress, and disrupts water balance. RESULTS: The present paper prepared a carboxymethyl cellulose-ferulic acid nanocomposite (FA-NC), which is a bio-based nano-formulation to enhance the performance of Dracocephalum moldavica in the presence of salinity stress, and the effect was directly compared to free FA. Carboxymethyl cellulose was successfully used to prepare the FA-NC, which was verified by conventional physicochemical characterizat

Variety-Specific Responses of Mulberry to Copper-Induced Stress.

Copper (Cu) is an essential plant micronutrient, but in excessive amounts it becomes phytotoxic, making Cu contamination of agricultural soils an important environmental concern. Because Cu tolerance mechanisms are complex and often genotype-specific, there is growing interest in multipurpose crops capable of thriving under metal stress. Mulberry is one of such species, which enables the combination of diverse agricultural uses with notable tolerance to heavy metals. In the present study, the tolerance to Cu-induced stress of five varieties belonging to Morus alba and M. indica was assessed in

Methyl jasmonate reduces the damage caused by low temperature combined with low light: By regulating photosynthetic capacity and hormone levels of pepper seedlings (Capsicum annuum L.).

Low temperature combined with low light (LL) stress is a major issue restricting the yield and economic benefits of protected vegetables. As a typical thermophilic vegetable, the growth and yield of Peppers (Capsicum annuum L.) are easily limited by LL conditions. Methyl jasmonate (MJ), a signal molecule, plays a vital role in plant stress responses. Therefore, this study investigated the regulatory mechanisms of Methyl jasmonate-induced cold tolerance in peppers. The results indicated that the 200 μmol L-1 MJ pretreatment significantly increased the leaf area of pepper seedlings under LL stre

Cross-regional and temporal generalizability of portable visible spectroscopy for olive maturity classification.

BACKGROUND: Olive maturity governs lot destination and the yield-quality trade-off in olive oil production, yet it is still monitored by subjective visual scoring of the Jaén index. Spectroscopic alternatives have relied mainly on near-infrared instruments, with scarce evidence from Brazilian orchards and almost no evaluation of spatial or temporal transfer. The preserny study investigated whether a portable visible spectrophotometer (400-700 nm, 31 wavelengths) combined with CIE L*a*b* colorimetry and machine learning can recover per-fruit ripening stage (six classes) with encouraging robustn

SlERF26 contributes to melatonin-associated regulation of ethylene biosynthesis and carotenoid accumulation during tomato fruit ripening.

SlERF26 acts as an essential downstream node in melatonin signaling, forming a novel regulatory module that integrates ethylene and carotenoid metabolism to drive tomato fruit ripening. Melatonin is an emerging regulator of plant development and stress responses, yet the specific transcriptional mechanisms by which it modulates climacteric fruit ripening remain largely unclear. In this study, we investigated the physiological effects of exogenous melatonin on tomato (Solanum lycopersicum cv. 'Micro Tom') fruit ripening and elucidated the underlying molecular regulatory network. Our results sho

Tidal forcing enhances ecological connectivity while preserving spatial heterogeneity in plankton communities across a subtropical lagoon-sea continuum.

Coastal lagoons are dynamic ecosystems where tidal forcing regulates environmental gradients and mediates biological exchange across the lagoon-offshore continuum However, how short-term tidal dynamics influence plankton community organization and assembly remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigated environmental variability, plankton dynamics, ecological connectivity, and community assembly patterns across six sequential stages of a flood-tide cycle in Xincun Lagoon, South China. Flood tide increased salinity and water depth while concurrently decreasing nutrients concentrations

Effects of environmentally relevant concentrations of citalopram in freshwater mesocosms.

Increased pharmaceutical usage has led to their widespread presence in aquatic environments, resulting in concerns regarding their potential environmental impacts. Antidepressants, particularly selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) like citalopram, are frequently detected in European surface waters. Acute laboratory studies have demonstrated that citalopram can inhibit algal growth, immobilise Daphnia magna, and may result in foot detachment (i.e. the inability to adhere to a substrate) in snails. However, research on long-term citalopram exposure is scarce, and our understanding of

Phytoene desaturase-silenced citrus as a trap crop with multiple cues to attract Diaphorina citri, the vector of Huanglongbing.

Huanglongbing (HLB) is one of the most destructive diseases in citrus worldwide. Unfortunately, HLB has no cure and management relies on insecticides to reduce populations of the vector, Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Liviidae). We propose an attract-and-kill strategy using a trap crop as an alternative to vector control to reduce transmission of the pathogen, 'Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus'. We evaluated vector response to phytoene desaturase-silenced citrus trees using virus-induced gene silencing technology. Citrus tristeza virus (CTV) was used to produce a phytoene desaturase-si
