BACKGROUND: The pathophysiology of seborrhoeic dermatitis (SebD) is complex and is likely to be related to an interplay of the microbial colonization of the skin and local immunity. There are also genetic components to the illness. At least two forms of SebD exist, infantile (ISebD), which has onset early in life, and SebD with later onset.

Treatment of Malassezia pachydermatis-associated seborrhoeic dermatitis with oral itraconazole was investigated in six Devon Rex cats (DRC). BACKGROUND: Zileuton, a 5-lipoxygenase inhibitor, reduces the number of inflammatory lesions in moderate acne and inhibits the synthesis of sebaceous lipids.
OBJECTIVE: To detect whether zileuton directly reduces sebum synthesis.
METHODS: A 40-year-old female with mild disseminated sebaceous gland hyperplasia and seborrhea was treated with zileuton 4 x 600 mg/day over 2 weeks, was followed-up for 6 weeks after discontinuation of zileuton and was re-treated with low-dose isotretinoin 10 mg/2nd day over 5 weeks. The lymphocyte transformation response to Malassezia furfur, Candida albicans, phytohaemagglutinin, concanavlin A and tuberculin purified protein derivative of 12 patients with pityriasis versicolor, 15 patients with seborrhoeic dermatitis and matched controls, was studied. The antiseborrheic effect of zinc L-cysteate, a new zinc compound, was evaluated in vitro by determining the lipidic metabolic activity of rat preputial glands as measured by incorporation of 14C-sodium acetate. At 10(-3) and 10(-4) mol/l, zinc L-cysteate was more active than S-carboxymethyl L-cysteine used as reference in corresponding concentrations (p < 0.05 and p < 0.01, respectively). The pharmacologic results seem promising for clinical studies in dermatology.

Twenty-one patients with seborrhoeic dermatitis were included in an open trial of lithium succinate ointment (LSO) for a total duration of 8 weeks. Forty Cuban patients affected by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), belonging to Group IV, assisted during a year at the Pedro Kourí Tropical Medicine Institute, are reported. Pneumocystis carinii, cryptosporidiosis, mucocutaneous herpes simplex, oral candidiasis and multidermatoma herpes zoster were the most commonly found infections. Other non-opportunistic diseases such as dermatitis seborrhoeica and onychomycosis were also present.
