Deep Omni-Supervised Learning for Rib Fracture Detection From Chest Radiology Images.

Deep learning (DL)-based rib fracture detection has shown promise of playing an important role in preventing mortality and improving patient outcome. Normally, developing DL-based object detection models requires a huge amount of bounding box annotation. However, annotating medical data is time-consuming and expertise-demanding, making obtaining a large amount of fine-grained annotations extremely infeasible. This poses a pressing need for developing label-efficient detection models to alleviate radiologists' labeling burden. To tackle this challenge, the literature on object detection has wit

An organ-effective modulation for non-contrast chest computed tomography imaging: effect on image quality and thyroid exposure reduction.

We investigate the efficacy of organ-effective modulation (OEM) technique for thyroid dose reduction among various body habitus and its impact on image quality in chest non-contrast computed tomography (CT). We prospectively enrolled 64 patients who underwent non-contrast chest CT from January to May 2022. The skin-absorbed radiation dose over the thyroid (Dthyroid) was obtained using a thermoluminescence dosemeter. Signal-to-noise ratio and image noise was also quantitatively assessed. In subjective analyses, two radiologists independently evaluated images based on a 5-point scale. The OEM gr

Computed tomography in the diagnosis of intraperitoneal effusions: The role of texture analysis.

The morphological changes advocating for peritoneal carcinomatosis are inconsistent and may be visible only in later stages of the disease. However, malignant ascites represents an early sign, and this fluid exhibits specific histological characteristics. This study aimed to quantify the fluid properties on computed tomography (CT) images of intraperitoneal effusions through texture analysis and evaluate its utility in differentiating benign and malignant collections. Fifty-two patients with histologically proven benign (n=29) and malignant (n=23) intraperitoneal effusions who underwent CT exa

Efficacy of model-based iterative reconstruction in cystic fibrosis assessment using CT.

AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of model-based iterative reconstruction (MBIR) constructed non-enhanced ultra-low dose (ULD) computed tomography (CT) of the chest to evaluate cystic fibrosis (CF) pathology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: ULD-CT was compared with chest X-ray and standard adaptive statistical iterative reconstructed (ASIR) non-enhanced low-dose CT (LD-CT). The effective radiation dose was calculated from the recorded dose-length product (DLP) values and compared between the two CT methods. Identification of pathology was compared between ULD-CT and chest X-ray. It was hypothesised that U

Multi atlas based segmentation: should we prefer the best atlas group over the group of best atlases?

Multi atlas based segmentation (MABS) uses a database of atlas images, and an atlas selection process is used to choose an atlas subset for registration and voting. In the current state of the art, atlases are chosen according to a similarity criterion between the target subject and each atlas in the database. In this paper, we propose a new concept for atlas selection that relies on selecting the best performing group of atlases rather than the group of highest scoring individual atlases. Experiments were performed using CT images of 50 patients, with contours of brainstem and parotid glands.

Novel Radiographic Assessment of the Cribriform Plate.

Background The cribriform plate (CP) is a common site of spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid (SCSF) leaks. Radiographic assessment of the anterior and lateral skull base has shown thinner bone in patients with SCSFs; however, prior assessment of the CP has required postmortem cadaver dissection. Objective To develop novel radiographic techniques to assess the anatomy of the CP. Methods Computed tomography (CT) scans were performed on cadaveric specimens. Bone density and anatomy of a predefined volume of interest of the posterior CP were assessed by two independent reviewers. CT assessment of olfa

Recognizing subtle near-occlusion in carotid stenosis patients: a computed tomography angiographic study.

INTRODUCTION: Near-occlusion of the internal carotid artery (ICA) is a significant luminal diameter (LD) reduction beyond a tight atherosclerotic carotid stenosis (CS). Recognition of even subtle near-occlusions is essential to prevent underestimation of the stenosis degree. Our goal was to investigate the prevalence of near-occlusion among CS patients using a single standard criterion to facilitate its recognition, even when distal ICA LD reduction is not visually evident in computed tomography angiography (CTA). METHODS: We analysed carotid artery CTAs of 467 patients with moderate-to-sever

Quantitative anatomy of the growing clavicle in the human fetus: CT, digital image analysis, and statistical study.

PURPOSES: Knowledge of dimensions of fetal long bones is useful in both the assessment of fetal growth and early detection of inherited defects. Measurements of the fetal clavicle may facilitate detection of numerous defects, e.g., cleidocranial dysplasia, Holt-Oram syndrome, Goltz syndrome, and Melnick-Needles syndrome. METHODS: Using the methods of CT, digital image analysis, and statistics, the size of the growing clavicle in 42 spontaneously aborted human fetuses (21 males and 21 females) at ages of 18-30 weeks was studied. RESULTS: Without any male-female and right-left significant diff

Multidetector CT evaluation of airway stents: what the radiologist should know.

Airway stents are increasingly used to treat symptomatic patients with obstructive tracheobronchial diseases who are not amenable to surgical resection or who have poor performance status, precluding them from resection. The most common conditions that are treated with tracheobronchial stents are primary lung cancer and metastatic disease. However, stents have also been used to treat patients with airway stenosis related to a variety of benign conditions, such as tracheobronchomalacia, relapsing polychondritis, postintubation tracheal stenosis, postoperative anastomotic stenosis, and granuloma

Real time pose recognition of covered human for diagnosis of sleep apnoea.

Existing video monitoring techniques for sleep apnoea require clinicians to analyze substantial amounts of video data. Analysis of the covered human body from video is a challenging task as traditional computer vision methods such as correlation, template matching, background subtraction, contour models and related techniques for object tracking become ineffective because of the large degree of occlusion for long periods. To the authors' best knowledge, there is no previously published method to estimate pose from persistently covered human body. This paper presents an automated monocular vide

Segmentation of uterine fibroid ultrasound images using a dynamic statistical shape model in HIFU therapy.

Segmenting the lesion areas from ultrasound (US) images is an important step in the intra-operative planning of high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU). However, accurate segmentation remains a challenge due to intensity inhomogeneity, blurry boundaries in HIFU US images and the deformation of uterine fibroids caused by patient's breathing or external force. This paper presents a novel dynamic statistical shape model (SSM)-based segmentation method to accurately and efficiently segment the target region in HIFU US images of uterine fibroids. For accurately learning the prior shape information

3D X-ray imaging methods in support catheter ablations of cardiac arrhythmias.

Cardiac arrhythmias are a very frequent illness. Pharmacotherapy is not very effective in persistent arrhythmias and brings along a number of risks. Catheter ablation has became an effective and curative treatment method over the past 20 years. To support complex arrhythmia ablations, the 3D X-ray cardiac cavities imaging is used, most frequently the 3D reconstruction of CT images. The 3D cardiac rotational angiography (3DRA) represents a modern method enabling to create CT like 3D images on a standard X-ray machine equipped with special software. Its advantage lies in the possibility to obtai

[A very uncommon reason for chest pain].

A 25-year old female immigrant from Kosovo living in Switzerland for three years complained of intermittent atypical chest pain and shortness of breath for three months. The patient was febrile (38.4 °C) and had a regular tachycardia of 120/min and a blood pressure of 105/65 mmHg. The ECG showed deep symmetric negative T-waves on the leads V1 - V6. The conventional chest X-ray revealed a small bulge of the left cardiac outline. Leucocytes and differential count were normal but the C-reactive protein was markedly elevated (118mg/L). Computed tomography of the chest revealed several pleural and

Patient-specific prediction of coronary plaque growth from CTA angiography: a multiscale model for plaque formation and progression.

Computational fluid dynamics methods based on in vivo 3-D vessel reconstructions have recently been identified the influence of wall shear stress on endothelial cells as well as on vascular smooth muscle cells, resulting in different events such as flow mediated vasodilatation, atherosclerosis, and vascular remodeling. Development of image-based modeling technologies for simulating patient-specific local blood flows is introducing a novel approach to risk prediction for coronary plaque growth and progression. In this study, we developed 3-D model of plaque formation and progression that was te
